Arin Hellant: Interesting, you all lead such happy lives. I wish we could lead such lives One.

One: Yes, sadly the power we possess always leads to danger to the people around us. This is the longest we've gone without being attacked in some form or another, it's nice to take a break.

Vanna: I spent my life up until September on the run from dark wizards. Mum never explained. She'd just show up at school and ask for me and then we'd hop on a train, get off at a random stop, and rent a house wherever we found ourselves. We'd stay there for a couple of months until they found us, and then we'd move on. Dad's a very powerful wizard, so they thought I'd be a good member of their party if they could only brainwash me to think like them. They're gone now, so I can stay at St. Edith's, with my dad, in 1935. Before, I was living in the early 21st century, without my dad.

Elsie: That sounds dramatic. Although, I could do with a break from my father sometimes.

Vanna: Well, what about you? Do you have problems with your dad?

Elsie: Well, not so much him. More my mother. She has a very specific image of what she wants me to be, and I'm not that, so she's disappointed in me. So I ended up feeling useless, and I got lonely. There were these two girls who used to pick on some of the girls from the village, including me. They grew out of it, but I never forgot how much control they had over me. I wanted to control people too. So I started being mean to other girls to make myself feel better-

Jasmine: We used to have someone here who killed people to make herself feel better.

Elsie: Well, I don't kill people! I felt good while I was doing it, but afterwards, once the rush wore off, I'd feel awful - even lonelier. Of course, the other girls avoided me. It just made my mother more disappointed, and she told me she was horrified at what I'd become. My father started a school at the vicarage, and I hated how all these girls could come in and sit in OUR front room, and how another girl had bagged MY special chair! I gave them a rotten time of it, of course, so much so that the school couldn't continue. My parents shut me in my room for a week. Then Miss Everdene came to visit, and told me she was starting up her own school, and would I become a pupil? My mother was hesitant, but she sent me. I was disappointed when I found it was only a day school - I hated my home, my parents wanted a different daughter, and my brothers looked down on me. I was lonely at the school anyway. All the girls who didn't know me were warned off me, so I gave up trying to make friends and just picked on them too. The little girls were the easiest. One word and they'd burst into tears. Except little Pip Greenwood.

Cis: The one who didn't understand sarcasm?

Elsie: Yes. Her. She kept telling me to stop it. She was Miss Everdene's niece, so she told me that she'd see that her aunt did something. Betsy Walker made a crowd out of my form and made me an outcast. But no-one's tried to kill me.

Vanna: So what's the climax of your book, then?

Elsie: I ran away. Walked more than thirty miles to Torrington to the theatre to see a pantomime with my friend Cecilia. Well, she wasn't my friend back then, she was just a girl who I'd been told to look after. But she became my friend afterwards, I think because I bought her gingerbread and ice-cream. Pip Greenwood got wind of it, though, and she and her twin sister took off after us, and arrived just as we were coming out of the theatre. The whole audience was treated to the spectacle of two teenagers being ticked off by a child of six! There were search parties, of course, and they brought us home. Pip and Pen were put in isolation for a week, and Cecilia and I for the remaining two weeks of term. However, the school was too small for proper isolation cubicles, so we talked a lot, and became friends.

Vanna: So you're less lonely now?

Elsie: Definitely. And I'm trying to be nicer to the other girls.

Vanna: Bravo, Elsie. Good on you.

Arin Hellant: Selfurus be damned, the dragon's are destroying the älven kingdoms in the world of Eneron. I really cannot stay anymore One.

One: Fine, but don't expect me to follow you. Looks like your life was screwed up, huh. Ginzaekh, Arin mentioned some form of delicacy from your world, what was it called again?

Bonnie: Ooh, food? Have you brought some?

Vanna: Um... I don't think that was food...

One: What do you mean it wasn't food? Arin said it was a rare delicacy that... I'm going to enjoy tomorrow morning much more than I should.

Vanna: Arin's a slacker who has admitted to sleeping through his first lesson on a regular basis, and you believe him about poo?

    It was poo, wasn't it?

Please tell me you didn't eat any of it!

Ginzaekh: What? I don't understand. I never talked about a delicacy.
The Rishnaran: It's not a delicacy. It's not even food.

One: Believe me, he's not as lazy as he comes off to be, but he does enjoy life a bit too much considering the circumstances he's in. And as for the delicacy, he's going to pay tomorrow morning.

Jasmine: Why's Vanna harping on about poo?

Vanna: I think the Rishnaran said it was an expletive, and then Arin asked if it was edible. Don't worry, Jasmine. Just don't eat any. Shall we change the subject?

Bonnie: Yes - what do you eat?

Ginzaekh: Deer, mostly. Horse, sometimes. Lots of beef since it's easy to catch. The occasional rabbit, though personally I don't think they're worth the trouble. Some vegetables, but not many. Fruit, but we don't eat it, we ferment it and use it to make drinks.
The Rishnaran: Ever had meat cider?
Ginzaekh: Sheep is good too. We don't eat snakes-- I hear they do that in Sharanghar, I can't imagine why. Sometimes we eat chickens, too. And if you can afford it, fish. We don't happen to live anywhere coastal, so that's off the table for us. We also chew capsicum leaves for our breath. It makes our mouths smell fiery. Actual fire just makes them smell smoky, which isn't a bad smell and goes really well with the capsicum.

Ginzaekh: We don't eat it all at once! One deer is more than enough.

Vanna: Do you make dishes out of it, or just eat it as is?

Jasmine: Also, what's capsicum? Is it some kind of mystical dragon-y herb?

Vanna: No, it's just ordinary, run-of-the-mill bell peppers.

    Jasmine: Really?

Vanna: Told you I could cook.

Bonnie: But you said your family cook taught you! You didn't HAVE a family cook until you went home with your papa last summer!

Vanna: I just modified facts. I didn't outright make them up unless I had to.

    Nat: Hello. Where am I?
    Ginzaekh: Uncle Nat?
Nat: Oh, Ginzaekh, you're here too. And Digdit! How've you been?
Digdit: Very well, old friend. I suppose you're wondering about this place.
Nat: That would be an astute observation, yes.
Koroon: It seems to be a hub where people from different universes interact with each other.
Nat: That explains why there aren't any dragons here. Look at all these daktars. Dav will be disappointed he missed it.
    Ginzaekh: Dav's been here, apparently.
Nat: What? And he didn't tell me?
Digdit: To tell you the truth I don't think he remembered. I've been here before and I'd forgotten all about it until now.
    Nat: Ah. I see.
Digdit: Everyone, this is Dav's father, Nat.
    Nat: Hello there.

Vanna: Hallo, Nat. It's nice to meet you, since we seem to be the only two groups left, once again. I remember Dav - he was the first dragon here. Oh, and we aren't daktars. Some of us are humans, some of us are witches. Ginzaekh, why didn't you tell us you were Dav's cousin? I thought you might be related from the surnames, but you should have mentioned!

I'm Vanna. I'm fifteen years old - thirty, in your years - and I go to St. Edith's Academy. Most of us do - my friends pop in and out - but this is Elsie, and she's the main protagonist of EMR's other book.

    Elsie: Hullo.

Vanna: I still wish One had stayed. There's no concept of time, here. Oh, why am I explaining this, the Rishnaran'll tell you everything you need to know, probably, or one of your friends.

    Elsie: What exactly are daktars?

    Vanna: Aargh!

Ginzaekh: Sorry, I thought I had mentioned it.
Nat: Ah, yes, I understand everything now.
    Digdit: That was fast.
The Rishnaran: What can I say, omnipotence is efficient sometimes.
Nat: So, how do you know about the Rishnaran?
The Rishnaran: I didn't tell him I was here.

Vanna: Exactly. I have five minutes before my singing lesson starts, but I can spend as long as I like here and still be on time. It's rather gaudy, actually.

One: So you're saying that i could stay in here for years and nothing will have changed out there? Vanna, I remember you saying something about going to a school for witches. If you are one, why don't you show us some of your world's magic?

Vanna: Oh, I can't do magic yet. I won't learn until I leave school. Ophelia could show you something, though.

Ophelia: I'm not sure that's a good idea. Last time I performed magic for demonstration purposes, I caused three terms' worth of trouble.

Vanna: [to One] Ophelia performed the Returning Spell that brought me here. [to Ophelia] Come on, Phelia! As long as you don't do anything too life-threatening it should be fine.

Harry: Leave the little lady alone, Vanna! If she doesn't want to do anything, she doesn't have too. I could do something, though.

Vanna: Hi, Dad. I've talked about you a lot, they know how powerful you are.

Ophelia: You knocked out all those Protectionists last summer.

Harry: How about something a little less violent? I'll tell you what, why don't we conjure up some instruments and have them play us a little tune? *Removes bottle from pocket* This is base potion. It's water and moneywort - we add other ingredients as we go. Now let's see... *Opens case, begins removing herbs* We mix these together in an earthenware pot. *Removes basin from case, drops ingredients in and begins stirring* Now we say the incantation. They are all in the ancient language used by wizards, which sounds similar to Latin - having a good grounding, like these girls, will really help with the all-important pronunciation. *Begins speaking another language, occasionally naming instruments. Eventually, a piano, several horns, saxophones, trombones, tubas and other brass instruments, and drums, appear* Perfect. It took a potion to summon them, but it just takes an incantation to get them to play. An excellent demonstration of both types of spell. What shall we have, ladies? Something current?

Jasmine: Ooh! "I Got Rhythm"! I used to dance to it with my nursemaid when it was new! She had a record of it!

Harry: Right you are, then, madame! Perhaps Vanna could sing along, if she knows the words, of course.

    Vanna: Sounds great.

*The instruments begin to play a lively swing tune, accompanied by Vanna's deep voice. Elsie screams*

Harry: Don't worry, kid. It's just music.

    Elsie: It's very strange music.

Harry: I can tell by your clothes that you're from some time around the Edwardian era. My wife Melody and I have had some happy times there.

Jasmine: Never mind that - let's show them how to swing dance!

Vanna: Do we know how to swing dance?

One: That's an interesting form of magic, we like to call what you just did alchemy, though it's a bit less straightforward and a lot more dangerous, as the ghost of Selfurus can attest, he's accompanied many a student to the afterlife. I like to do things with a bit more flair. The staff in One's hand flares with light until is almost shining like the sun, small waves of energy pulsate out as material forms from the air and into instruments similar to those Harry created. That is what we consider alchemy, I am more advanced in it, our students would use material and turn it into such things, but I am able to do it with air. Why don't you try some magic with this, One offers the staff to Vanna It is called the staff of wonders, it allows even a mortal to wield godlike power, but I have it toned down a bit. Just hold it and order it to do something. But be careful.
