Are they newer users posting in them though? Or seasoned members? Because it's the new users who don't yet know where things go who really need to read the stickies.
this is true , but wrey can always merge them in there ... especily if the main mission is to reduce the number in GW
I'll defo look at any suggestions you guys make. I may not necessarily always take the action though. Don't take it to sternum. Much as I may want to merge a host of particular topics (1st vs 3rd, Present vs Past, etc.) I need to be careful about not causing the overall number of threads to take too hard a hit. In the long ago past we had an issue with one of the original mods who became a Broken Toy™ one day and started hard-deleting threads on a rampage. This took a toll on our overall thread-count. The owner, Daniel, has been understandably touchy on that matter ever since. I'm not slighting the owner; I was here when the deletion scandal happened, so I understand perfectly why he feels the way he does.
Yeah i thought that too (mashers)... may be we could lump them together with cover art 20 pages in i'm stopping for a break and to walk the hound... I doubt we will find ourselves meeting in the upper nile tonight and sure thing Wrey - I'm just putting it out there for the consideration of wiser heads (sub fora would be another option which doesn't reduce thread count) mind you I'm sure Daniel is sensible enough to see the difference between pruning for the good of the forum and going on a crazed rampage after too much sangria
I dislike seeing threads combined (as opposed to just moved) without urgent necessity. It scrubs out context that can be valuable. Italics for thought? Yes, toss it in the bucket. But I think that the number of similar cases is limited. The strength of this place is interaction, not encyclopedic organization, and the context that is scrubbed is likely to be about interaction.
I really do feel like I missed out on some excitement 'round these parts! Everything's so functional and boring these days...
I agree as well when the threads are worthwhile... but there are a lot of one or two post wonders in GW along the lines of "I don't know what to write" and " Help me find an idea for a story" not to mention the perennial favourite " I has writers block" which could be combined without losing anything other than thread volume
They were heady days. We hardly bathed, taking pride in affecting a scrappy, careless look that said our minds were on greater goals. Like proletariat townsfolk in the jungles of Bolivia and Colombia. We drank too much, smoked too much, traded lovers with ease or by duels at sunrise. The jungle was hot, but the blood in our veins was hotter still.
And it's interesting to me the way this project of moving threads has played out. At the beginning I would have told you - going purely off of intuition - that with the number of people in our forum working on Fantasy and Science Fiction stories, I would have expected a huge number of the threads that I moved to go to Setting Development, since Fantasy and Sci-Fi, of all genres, require the creation of completely novel settings. That would have been my assumption. It's an incorrect assumption. Other than Research, it's been the least used destination subforum for these moves, all the ones I did by myself and all the ones where I'm now receiving help combined.
I'd say we need a poetry sub forum in by the genre ( I know that's one for Daniel) but there are a lot of poetry threads in GW which would get more attention collected together ETA : yeah my feeling plot dev is the numero uno destination , followed by the lounge (of course it could be that neither of us has hit a rich seam of setting development - i'm only on page 24 coming from the front)
bearing in mind i'm four hours in front of you and have to go to work in the morning you may have to press on without me from about 6pm your time
I'm gonna start up again tomorrow. I've made a note of where I got to (chronologically) so I should be able to pick up where I left off.
Actually I've just left a tab open with the next thread to be checked, so I'll just carry on from there.
