An uncle of mine used to say that the only two acceptable uses of profanity were humor and emphasis. Using "horseshit" once and only once in a novel certainly adds emphasis.

It's like with Michael's Caine's portrayal of Alfred in the Nolan Batman. When he's angry with Bruce it feels like it matters, because normally he's quite polite and restrained; being a professional butler. The absence of something is a powerful contrast with it's appearance.

Feels like I need context to really understand this, who's line is who's?, but nice.

My main character, Ellie, is sitting on a bar stool waiting for her date who is late. She's on her third diet coke and when he finally shows up, she hops off the bar stool, looks up at him, smiles sweetly and says, "If I'd been drinking wine, I'd be one drink away from an AA meeting. Dinner better be amazing."

"The devil always gets the best lines" - Marc Maron - GLOW

With that sentiment in mind, I have to agree that I've always like my villains' lines far better than most of my heroes'.

When called a murderer, one on my heavies turns from a most grisly scene to regard the captured hero dourly, "Murderer? Murderers can only dream of what I've accomplished."

I wrote this today, and rather like it.

This isn't really a quote from your main character, unless your MC is quoting Winston Churchill. If the quote is not yours originally, please attribute it properly.

Here are some quotes from my own main characters:

Knizor: Do, or do not. There is no try.
Assirratan: (after someone asks if he wears a hood to cover a deformity) Oh, no, it's just that they're terribly comfortable. I think everyone will be wearing them in the future.
Zarakharn: Come to die, Ginzaekh Arrissa.

My favorite quotes tend to be elaborate allegories that borderline stop making sense by the time the character finishes the thought.

I had to wonder how he felt about a stranger like me moving in with him. It couldn’t be easy. I mean, just sharing your bachelor pad with a girlfriend had to be a speed bump on the highway of life when you are a strong, independent man, but when it’s a ghoulish undead girl the change is probably more akin to cruising into a ravine on the Autobahn.

All Hera's lines. And the book isn't written yet, so it's pretty loose still. Basically, it's a revenge story against a powerful individual who wouldn't have been brought to justice by normal means. He took away someone whom the MC really cared about, and in a rather horrendous way. It's a thread that starts in the first book, of which this would be book three or four.

Strangely my MC "Lucky" Lawson has a line that says "Never in the course of human conflict has so much shite been talked by so many about so few" (Hes an RAF pilot who is truly sick of the propaganda and glorification of the war - the book is mostly about the Battle of Britain but its told in hindsight by the MC looking back at his life )

Reversal of the quotation has a ring of 'lions & donkeys.'

You need to be the single Communist MP, the year is 1940, in the Chamber, rising to your feet, the aftermath of Dunkirk, a cloth cap in your hands:

'No gentlemen, never was so much owed by so few to so many.'

Then the constables drag you outside, shot against the wall in Speaker's Court.

..... “Fine,” Three Thirteen repeated, his gaze crawling purposefully to the numeration patch at the provider’s shoulder. Yes, Chief. It was Provider Seven Oh One who refused me the set. His eyes moved up and did a clockwise scan of the provider’s unfortunate face.

..... Ugly, but clean. Very clean. Clean boy is a fuck toy.

..... The provider glared, the traditional response written on his mug. Dirty man is a cum can.

@Wreybies, Those two underlined sentences are simply beautiful. There are tears from my eyes both from laughing and being overwhelmed with emotion due to the sheer artistry :p.

@Wreybies Hey wreybies. what story is this from and what genre is that? I'm actually interested in having a conversation with you on writing tactics. XD
I would like to know where lines in the book/scene come from and what goes on.

That little ditty comes from a story that's on pause at the moment. It's from an M/M erotic spec-fic story that verges a teensy bit on the fetish side. Three Thirteen is an inmate on a mining asteroid prison; hence numbers instead of names in this part of the story. Later we learn his real name is Marco.

I like the premise sounds interesting. Hey, can I ask? Since you brought up borders on the fetish side. What is generally okay in writing/publishing in our society these days. What's still frowned upon and not okay and can get a person into trouble? (Talking large scale not just sexual content.)
