    Creatures of the Nether

Discussion in 'Setting Development' started by Stammis, Aug 17, 2017.

I was wondering if there is any lore or myth about spiritual creature that may be summoned, or otherwise, exist in parallel to our own world? Perhaps creatures that only certain people can see?

The idea struck me, along those lines, for my fantasy story and I would very much appreciate any direction that would lead me to any real world equivalent from ancient mythology that I could draw from.

Faeries are often thought to live in a sort of parallel world to our own, and humans with the Sight can see them. Also some animals, and if you look through an adderstone, etc
    Not generally particularly summonable, though.

I not sure where you are going with this, it seems to be taking concepts from multiple areas and trying to meld them together. Your quest is sort of asking does this cross-section already exist, and as far as I know, I am not aware of it. To be more accurate it partially exists in certain areas of lore.

    for example:

    in your first question:
lore or myth about a spiritual creature that may be summoned, or otherwise, exist in parallel to our own world?

this to me is pointing to the Alister Crowley, Lovecraft, Blavatsky, the world of the Occult and Theosophy.

    and Blavatsky's psychic teachings.

Moving forward toward Monroe and Casteneda, as more recent explorations.

however, when you cross-section this to an equivalent from ancient mythology, it becomes ephemeral and really depends on how it's interpreted. At this point, I do not really have enough personal experience or knowledge to give you anything substantial. I would also need much more context in narrowing down the mythology while some of it does overlap between cultures they do have their own distinct stories.

one of the bigger sites which may be worth exploring is:

if I take this to an end game type conclusion though, then for me it would be walking into Jacques Vallee and John Keel world of Ultraterrestrials.

if you really want someone knowledgeable in these subjects and has researched it for a long time across a wide spectrum than I would say get a hold of Tom Montalk

Very interesting sources and I thank you for them. But I think what I'm looking for is spiritual creatures from animalistic lore, from Celtic and Shamanistic cultures. The creatures, in my story, are helpful and guide those that can see them.

Sorry to tell you this, but most folkloric creatures were basically bastards. Right down to fairy being more about stealing children than being nice, Leprechauns are from the same group that inspired the white walkers in game of thrones, the best thing I can recommend is looking at Irish Mythology, which is Gaelic. While the spirits are not nice, they do live in their own world(ish), and while they cannot be summoned, they do interact with others.

    Caveat re animal helpers/guides :
--- btw Native Americans do not have spirit guide animals, it's more tied to New Age and Hollyweird fantasy than Native American Traditions.
--- the folklore is closer to Aesop's fables than some mystical belief system. much in the same way we do not associate a tortoise as having mystical meaning from the story of the tortoise and the hare.
--- however, it's kind of fun to associate certain characteristics with animals or other mythological creature in a similar manner to astrology.

If anyone is curious, I settled for the Jinn as my inspiration.
