After stopping myself from being a stupid boy and yet again starting over from scratch, I got back as many words as I could from previous drafts.

So I need my MC's girlfriend to answer:

"I want a really beautiful ring so that everyone knows I am taken."

when my MC suggests that they should engage.

I wasn't sure there were especially beautiful engagement rings.
When my wife and I got engaged 40 years ago both her ring and mine were a very plain modell. I think all engagement rings I saw were just a plain gold ring.
But I need her to say beautiful, so I wrote that.

Today at lunch I happened to pass a jeweler shop. I went inside and I said I was writing a novella and my heroine needed to say that she wanted an extra beautiful engagement ring.
Is this something she could say? Are there extra beautiful engagement rings?

The older gentleman behind the disk smiled like the sun.

"O yes, nowadays there are."

He wanted to show me, but I said it was enough to know that there are extra beautiful engagement rings.

This is going to be expensive for my MC.
I remember I could afford the engagement (plain gold) ring but I had to borrow money from my mother for the wedding ring. Gold, white gold and five diamonds.

 

Sleeping until 10 am is so strange to me. Strange but goooooood. How many people can say "I'm happy I pulled my back!"

That's interesting. Far as I know, here in the US the wedding ring is a plain gold band and the engagement ring carries all the diamond bling.

 

This has to be investigated, maybe I got it wrong. (But I doubt that).
I am Swedish my wife was at that time Finnish and we were married at the Swedish embassy in Lissabon, Portugal.
My ring is the same, it sort of is first an engagement ring and then a wedding ring.
I better consult not my wife.

But as the story is set in GB, there is no problem that Samantha wants a beautiful engagement ring!

 

I asked at work, in Sweden (probably also Finland) the young couple engage, they both have a simple gold ring (same model), when they get married the bride gets a fancy ring.

If I understand correctly the man (GB USA) does not get a ring when they engage, but he gets one when they marry!

I had a look inside my ring, it says Anita 19 20/5 78.
So it's actually 39 years ago.

Yes, the man doesn't get an engagement ring .

Getting one when he gets married isn't mandatory. It's become more commonplace over the last 50 years. My father never wore a wedding ring - never wore a ring - he got married in 1941...maybe wartime austerity? But I think it was just not the done thing for a man to wear jewellery!

Engagement rings, in particular, seem to have been subject to an "arms race"...there appears to be a competition to have a bigger and better one than your friends...so they're probably (no expert here) blingier now than 50 years ago.

And then you get an eternity ring when you've been married long enough...no, not an eternity!!!...and that can be even blingier!

Yay, I got the job I applied for (a training specialist for a big company)! I really, really super wanted it, and I'm still flabbergasted I actually got it.

Yup, it's the same in Finland.

 

The first prescribed brands and doses of my antidepressants and anti-psychotics have done nothing short of turn my world upside down. Where before I was living on the cold underside of a rock with all the bugs and dirt and general filth, I'm now bathing in sunlight and quite enjoying the journey of rediscovering myself as a person.

 

This is the current rank for the book I released yesterday. I know it's not like a best seller or anything, but I'm super happy anyway (and the only one I know who bought it is me - my family doesn't read or have any interest in my stuff)

Oh, I also found my old handmade baby clothes in a box my mother gave me. Staring at them made my mind fly backward in time then forward again. Its fucking amazing that we were all once so small.

Still, much happiness in finding these. Since the condition is still great I just might let my own kid wear them. That's assuming I ever get around to doing that, heh.

Woo hoo! Finally managed to get onto the golf course this morning. Was only able to play thirteen holes, but it was glorious.

Sadly, no, but we did start the round with a thermos of Bloody Marys.

 

Ah. So one of your thermoses only holds thirteen holes' worth of Bloody Marys. You clearly need a bigger thermos to get in a full eighteen holes. Also, pack along a few beers in case you get your math wrong, or just get thirsty.
