Quick jewellery question for the Brits......

Discussion in 'Research' started by Viridian, Aug 22, 2017.

I want to refer to a well known and preferably exclusive jewelers in the UK. I have come up with Hancocks but wondered if many of you have heard of them? Their site says they are the oldest fine jewelers based in Manchester but personally I don't recall them.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks :)

I'm not much of an expensive jewellery kind of person but a quick search and refresh of my memory brought these to my attention: De Beers, Asprey, and Mayfair (I think most of those are based in London - they are well established and date back until 1888 for the oldest one and they all charge a fortune, haha) ... I hope that helps :)

I haven't heard of Hancocks, or the three that @A.S.Ford mentions. The only ones I can name are the high street retailers Ernest Jones and H Samuels, and neither of them are exclusive.

Of this list of British jewellers, the only one I recognise is Fabergé. I think most people will have heard of him.

In all seriousness, I think the problem you'll find is that most readers won't recognise a prestigious jeweller. Unless your target audience is of a particular demographic, it would probably be better to make one up, and somehow allude to the exclusivity.

Down Piccadilly, the Burlington Arcade, St James or Mayfair. Bond St, as well.

Tiffany's on Bond Street, Christmas Eve, 4000 men in a blizzard of panic, scooping any shit.

    ...

Google round those areas, oh shh, oh Kensington, Knightsbridge.

    Ahhh, everything is HERE: http://www.tatler.com/article/royal-warrants

Hancocks do the VC. There's a documentary ever 20 years, you see the Russian cannon from Balaklava, I think.

    Thanks for the help guys.....

Yeah, looks like Hancocks isn't going to work - I'm from Manchester and I don't bloody remember them!!!! (though that's not saying much these days). I have heard of De Beers but think of them as mainly diamond dealers, H Samuels I DO remember from back home but not prestigious enough - on the flip side I think Faberge is too much in the other direction. Making one up won't work either - it's only a teeny spec in the book but the sentence is this....

She saw that anything of real value was safely locked away beneath the counter and although this was no [ ] there were some truly exquisite pieces tucked amongst the usual display of rings, chains and bracelets.

I think Tiffanys would work perfectly - thanks @matwoolf

    :)

I thought Tiffany's was too plebby, associated really with New York. Garrards, Mappin & Webb is more Antique Roadshow.

Tiffanys is central to 'American culture,' unless someone corrects me. Famous song about Tiffany(')s:

Yes they do - I just saw that on their London website but it's not on their Manchester one. I think I vaguely remember their store front now from looking at their website, but not the name, so it completely defeats the purpose. I think most people will know the name Tiffanys though.

I thought you wanted one of those places where they 'let you in.'

Oh, Hatton Garden, of course, old & Jewish. That's q evocative and fits with the wandering into an old jewellers and spending 40 thousand.

Never heard of Hatton Garden, I'm more of a H Samuels girl myself, but I have heard of Tiffanys and it does make me think of fine jewelry. Loving your avatar by the way, Sweep still remains my favourite :) He's a funny little bugger.

I guess I shouldn't have been specific about it being a British jewelers. Just a well known name associated with fine jewelry is good enough.

    cheers ears

Awhile back Tiffany was a big deal here in the US, then all most wanted was their box to put other things into, now not much is heard from them unless you look into pretentious rich people stuff.
A lot of jewelry houses are generational, meaning they are big with a generation, then are kind of considered 'old', which makes sense since most rarely change up designs much. They get known for something and base their busines off of it.

Yes, Hatton Garden is London's jewellery quarter.

No one has mentioned Pandora! That and H.Samuel are the only jewelry stores I can even remember seeing on my last trip to the local shopping centre. :superlaugh:
