Slowly plodding through Leviathan Wakes, by James S.A. Corey. So far it reads like early Robert A. Heinlein, but with a little too much explanation of the tech involved, and less colorful characters. I'm going through it very slowly because I'm also reading a bunch of non-fiction as well, and I'm kinda between houses so I don't have a lot of time to read.
That's exactly what I thought about it: Heinlein without the flavor. It gets better but never really rises above the pulp. Good book so long as you aren't expecting anything thought-provoking. I may or may not read the second one.
Finished Stardust which....eh....didn't enjoy it. Took me much longer to finish than American Gods and AG is three times its length. Certainly my current worse Gaiman read, but thanks to my iron will and Lord Genius I finished. Praise Genius. Finally decided to pick up GOT and give it a go. I don't remember who brought me this hardcover version of it, but I found it on my bookshelf and friends won't shut up about it so I'll give it a spin.
Recently I finished It. An absolutely amazing book, and full of the detail that I adore. A god awful length(1153 pages) but well worth it, and I was mildly impressed with myself for reading it in a month or so. Also recently finished 1984. A commentary, and a warning, about politics and power. The book is less about the story than the political commentary it gives. The commentary is simply structured into a story that carefully reveals itself. In my opinion, Orwell was a one of the great political thinkers of all time, as he managed to think through the consequences and necessities and causes of absolute power. Currently, I am reading The Lost City of Z by David Grann. Truly a great story, but an easy read. I made it through the first 125 pages in the first two days of reading it. I do like how it intertwines his story of researching the book, and Percy Fawcett's story. There is a multitude of other books I'm kind of reading, but don't have a lot of time for, as I'm a student. These include Hamlet, Lord of the Flies(That book best introductory sentence I've ever read by the way), and some other works that don't really even count as being read at this point.
Just finished Hunter, by Mercedes Lackey, and am now on Elite, of the same series. Sorry, @Wreybies , Cibola Burn is on the back burner for now, it's just too hefty. I need light and fluffy bc I'm really focusing on trying to get this novel done.
I just finished Epidemin (The Epidemic) by Åsa Ericsdotter. Swedish book and I don't know if it's getting a translation or not, but it was a really intressting. It's about a political party coming to power in Sweden who decides to outlaw fat people! Nothing's better than forced dieting and cheap gastric bypasses, right? Especially if you just lost your job because of your weight. The book just felt special and fresh, some how. If it gets a English/American release I would recommend giving it a read!
William Gibson's Neuromancer - I'm having real trouble understanding and connecting with (if you'll pardon the pun) the whole concept of the matrix etc, but enjoying it nonetheless.
Emergency Sex and other desperate measures by Andrew Thomson, Heidi Postlewait, Kenneth Cain. It has a lot of moments , if you get my meaning.
Reading 'Strong Measures' Edited by Philip Dacey & David Jauss. It is a collection of 400+ pages of poetry. I often find myself circling the names poets whose poems I found enjoyable and buying their complete works.
King went insane halfway through the series and transformed it from an epic into a weird, incoherent cross-dimensional tragedy full of pointless cameos from his other books. He introduces elements of this into his revised version. The Gunslinger is an incredible book and it laid out King's retconned original universe (he didn't even retcon the right parts, because book seven came out before the revised book one and he'd already presented some truly pathetic justification for the inconsistencies between them). My advice: just accept that the latter part of the series sucks and take it for what it is. Don't twist an excellent book to suit the needs of a mediocre one later.
I didn't finish the series, and didn't know that he'd done that, guess I'll stick with where I ended up (either the one with the star-shaped seed cakes and the thinny, or Wizard and Glass, whichever came later.) It just started too much to resemble The Cat Who Walks Through Walls.
Reading Sarah Waters' 'Tipping The Velvet' again. Tons of unread books waiting for me, but I keep going back to her books.
Still ploughing through William Gibson's Neuromancer. I've heard this book described as 'seminal' on several occasions, but I can't make head nor tail of what's going on during the matrix/hacking scenes. Absolutely impossible to visualise.
Aye, I had the same trouble with the novel as well. Gibsons writing also gave me a headache on some occasions. Good book though, don't give up m8. Reading the Series of Unfortunate events - book 3 The Wide Window and a couple of others: Ananasi Boys and Snow Crash. Been a bit busy with packing and writing to really sink in the hours to read.
Yes, hardly an 'easy' read, is it? I will persevere however. Keep looking at Snow Crash - one of those that gets thrown up on my recommended page at amazon.
Just realized I haven't read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep yet and I tried to hunt down the book today to no avail. Walked 10 miles looking for that book, hitting up all the bookstores I could....eh. Guess Amazon will come to the rescue...again. Oh yea, still reading Snow crash and, well, yeah.
Snow Crash and Ancillary Justice are such flavors of the, well, year or more I guess, but from everything I've heard about them, I just don't feel like they'd interest me. Alastair Reynolds is another one that I just never got. Everyone was raving about him, I read Century Rain and damn near threw it out the window...
