So get in the car and start driving

The underlying point is you keep telling us your life is shit - but its your life so do something about it.... EOTD its your choice to stay in a town you hate, with people you don't like and nothing that you enjoy. You can take control of your life and make something happen, or you can make excuses, its really your choice.

1/ Guy goes for an interview..,is asked "Can you use a micrometer?" He says "Yes."...first day on the job, he goes up to one of the other guys and says "Can you show me how to usea a micrometer?"...

3/ As @Simpson17866 says, proofreading your own is way harder than reading somebody else's - because you know what you thought you wrote, so you can't see that you didn't. That's why you get alpha and beta readers.

5/ As my wife and I keep reminding each other about the kids, they're grown-ups, responsible for their own lives.

6/ I'm not sure I'd take a job where underwear is precluded...wait, you're speaking American?

My old firm hired a surveyor and sent him to site to measure a building. He forgot his tape measure, but improvised by walking heel-to-toe around the building and recording the number of 'feet' it was. Three years at university and he couldn't understand that a foot is actually a defined length.

My parents are saying "Please take the job" and "I don't know how we're going to manage without you, we need you here."

I'm going to be honest: I have versatile skill sets and myriads of interests that almost any field could work for me.

I'm also the sort of person who can do whatever job is needed of me if it keeps a roof over my head & food in my belly, and I easily entertain myself or find my bliss in hobbies & free time.

To be honest, if I knew the salary was sufficient to scrape by a living in LA, I would take it in a heartbeat. I still think I'm going to take it, but I'm still worried about the math of budgets & needs of basic survival.

Also, it's happening so fast that I really am worried about my parents. I tend to be hyper efficient and do double duty so my dad barely has to do anything at work anymore—because it's all beyond his capabilities and time management at his age.

Plus what with my sister having a disability, my brother living in living in London, and my uncle still recovering from clinical death from several months back, my mother doesn't have anyone other than myself to help with obaachan who at most speaks broken English, now has Alzheimer's, and is close to needing live-in care. It's part of the reason we're moving, because our current home & ranch is not a safe environment to care for my obaachan. And my obaachan can't go to a home because even just living by herself she's commented frequently about killing herself before she becomes a burden to us. And not in a depressive suicidal way—but in a Japanese it's-honourable-to-take-your-own-life-when-in-certain-circumstances way. It's so God damn casual and matter of fact that we know she'll really do it. Just cause she thinks she might be inconveniencing us. And we have a two helpers that come a couple days a week to her house for her, but mostly it's my mother & myself.

So I don't know how my parents can operate the business and care for my grandmother with me gone.

However, because my family is looking at selling our property & retiring to a smaller bit of land, I was always going to be out of a job sometime between December and next year. So this position is really a Godsend.

And in most respects it's far more than I was thinking I would get—let's be real about sustainable career options as an English Major. Most of my friends ended up as substitute teachers (which is not actually a bad job so long as you want to be a teacher; I personally respect all vocations) and they're having trouble maintaining a regular income. Several live with their parents, couple more stay for extended periods at this one girl's parents' home on various couches. I am literally so blessed at this opportunity.

I typed this all yesterday (9/19) and when I saw my mom last night she came clean with me that if I left my family business, they'd go bankrupt. She admitted that I do the work equal to three employees and am what's currently keeping our business running. She brought up the care for my obaachan and the fact that she'd probably die. And other points.

So I was founded in all my fears and anxiety and guilt.

My mom does know the head attorney at the firm (it's how they heard about me and I heard about their desperate need for a fluent-in-English Copy Editor) so she's going to try to openly confide the family situation to see if they're willing to wait a couple months before I start work for them.

I mean technically they've been operating for 25~ years without a Copy Editor or anyone to correct their English. What's a couple of months?

    (>_<)

I thought my excessive use of "literally" and regional slang such as "legit" would've been the first tip off.

Bought my first professional/adult fashion magazine.

My mom tried to psych me out of the purchase because "Japanese (business) fashion is different than Chinese (business) fashion." What she forgets is American department stores aren't going to be carrying either Japanese or Chinese fashion brands, so it's a moot point.

I just like the broader style ideas rather than replication of actual outfits.

don't let her guilt trip you - do what you need to do - unless you really want to work for the family business and provide care for your ancient relatives for ever

If you're doing the work of three employees at the family business, this suggestion may make you laugh, but you mentioned that they had asked if you could start working from home even sooner than their ideal start date. Could you ask them if you could work part-time on high priority stuff only until you get things sorted at the family biz? I understand your mom's concerns, but if the family is planning on winding things up soon, you could end up tidying things up there as it closes down and then have no job anywhere when it does, which would suck for you.

Well, first, I don't actually mind caring for my obaachan or the idea of caring for my parents when the time comes.

For one, my mom has always been an example to me in caring for her elders. She not only cared for her parents but for my father's racist, abusive mother and was literally with her till the end, despite a lifetime of her unadulterated hatred.

The other is obaachan had a hand in raising me. While my parents were at their wits' end with my disabled sister and her specialised medical & other needs, I was often shipped off to obaachan's to be cared for for weeks or months at a time. I am who I am as much because of my maternal grandmother as my actual parents. And I love her. And I'm of the mind that family takes care of family.

Lastly, my mother isn't trying to guilt trip me. She wants me to take the job. But as someone who has been equally keeping our family business running with her since 2004 (my dad didn't even work with us in the beginning, not until '09; it was my mother, my brother, and my creation), my mom has always confided in me where we stand and what needs doing and what requires a miracle.

My mom had no thought of "if I tell her all this, she'll have to stay with me." She wasn't telling me anything I didn't already know or strongly suspect. She just is very open with me about the state of affairs of things. She has been helping me look for affordable flats and telling which neighbourhoods in LA are no-gos (safety or distance from office, etc) and trying to help me suddenly buy a whole new work wardrobe frugally, etc.
We're actually trying to see if I could have one more day off a week, and then if the documents don't have imminent due dates perhaps I could work on some from home. Like if I could have a week to complete them.

It's probably going to be rough even so, with the combination of the physically exhausting ranch work with a whole bunch of legal documents to scour over for inconsistencies & grammatical errors. But I'll do it, God help me, I'll do it.

Also, HOW DO GIRLS FIND SHOPPING FUN? It is so fatiguing. Just grabbing a whole bunch of things and then trying them on one after another after another. . .

It was a lot easier finding presentable looking ranch clothes than Law Firm attire—black, grays, & navys; no short sleeves or sleeveless; no trousers(happy, Brits?); no heels (any height); cannot be tight fitting; cannot be baggy; must be knee length; et cetera.

And then all American work clothes are form fitting sheaths with keyholes or lowcut, cold shoulders or sleeveless, and all over 3+ inches above the knees.

    Like seriously?

Thats not true. Nobody has that kind of tech, nor the alloys
to build one yet. Hydrogen fuel cells that are efficient, or
small fusion reactors don't exist either. Let alone the capability
of taking one out with any efficiency, without wasting
several thousand rounds from a 50 cal at minimum. :p

I have met a few nice ladies, but they all seem to have that detail
of having children by mistake with other guys. Not ready to play
the father figure for some other dudes kids. Not my responsibility.
Like to think there are some out there that value the important
things in a relationship. Shallowness is a negative quality to me.
Don't even have any cheesy pickup lines, or anything like that.
So no one would call me a PUA. Sure meaningless sex is fine and
dandy, but I don't have commitment issues. :D
I like substance and quality, as I am not as simple as you might think.

So they keep pressuring me to start immediately

But they haven't even sent me an offer letter, so I think it's a little ridiculous to try to get someone out of their current job without them knowing what they're getting into.

They still haven't told me the wage/salary.

Like potentially it could be less than my current job's wage, and they want me to burn my bridges before getting this information?

I realize I work with my family, but the supervisor doesn't know this and so the whole thing seems out of whack.
