I get what you're saying, about how the 50.000 words would feel rushed to you, and they would be unusable. But I don't look at it that way. I see the 50.000 words that I have to write in November as an extra motivation to sit myself down and give myself time to write. Which I don't do in other months (except for the Camp NaNo months). Because I'm going to write the story anyway, so why not try and write a big part of it in November? And if I don't get to 50.000, it doesn't matter. I don't lose anything.
Out of the six years I've done it, only one year did I end up deleting most of it in the end because it was useless. The other years, it was what I had meant to write anyway. Because I didn't look at it as something I now had to rush, I just looked at it as extra motivation. :)

Yeah, I mostly use NaNo as an excuse to not have to worry about anything but writing for a month. It's how I've written most of my recent published novels.

It's not so much rushing as just spending more time in front of the keyboard.

I'm going to participate in my first nano after trying out a camp... however I may need to rebel so I can continue the series I'm working on... only one part is going to even be 50k+ long and I already got 7k+ words in.

I'm currently just hoping I'll be able to either do NaNo or my homebrew November writing challenge this year at all, because my laptop is still out of commission

I hate the idea of this stupid thing, to be honest. It screams "oh, my novel would be so good - if only I had time to write it." I find it kind of insulting to professional creative writers.

Some of my favorite novels were written in less than a month (if I remember correctly, Moorcock wrote some of his Elric novels in less than a week?). Speed and reader satisfaction are unrelated, particularly if you're able to quit your day job and write full-time.

And many professional romance writers are writing and publishing a novel a month, because they need to in order to keep up with the market. They might take three months to go from 'Chapter One' to a finished, edited ebook available to sell, but they start a new book at the beginning of every month and send it out to their editor at the end of the month.

I am considering trying NaNoWriMo again next month ... I usually stick to the April and July Camp NaNos as I prefer the set up (your own word count choice, cabins with supportive people, etc.) but for some reason (perhaps it is because I am not returning to University this month as I have just completed my MA degree so maybe I miss having some sort of pressure from an external force, especially since I haven't been able to secure a job yet for myself) I am itching to take on the NaNo challenge. However, I think I will need to be rebel if I am to take NaNo on this year as I only want to work on my current novel (I am 55% of the way through - about 33,000 words - and want to have the first draft completed by summer 2018 at the latest) ... the only hitch with that is the fact that the novel I am writing is only supposed to be a 60,000 word project so if I manage to complete the remaining 27,000 words of my novel during the NaNo challenge then I will need to think of what to do for the remaining 23,000 words for the challenge, haha, but I am sure I will work something out when/if it comes to it.

I'm going to attempt at this NaNoWriMo thing. It's good to challenge yourself. Push your limits and succeed.

Interesting idea... This will actually be the first year I can work on it (was too busy previous years with grad school and currently have no job, so, no excuses). I actually set a personal goal of 20k words because the story I want to work on is a brand new idea I birthed 2 weeks ago lol. So, I'm not confident I can churn out 50k. But I want to see how hard I can push myself since I've never actually pushed myself and just wrote whenever I felt like it (which was sometimes a lot). I am worried though because right now all I want to do is read!!! I don't wanna wriiiite.... lol.

I'm all about being a rebel. Rules were meant to be broken. Especially when the rules are arbitrary and have no consequences.

I think I'll blog about my progress.

This is the first real year I am also going to attempt this. I tried last year, but gave up after a day or two when work stuff got in the way, ha. But I guess I fit into the Nano Rebel category because I have technically already started. I'm a couple chapters in, but my goal will still be to reach 50K by the end of November.

    Let's see how this goes....

I'm going to write a script instead of a novel and I don't have much time to write because of school, so my goal is more like 3K.

I'm going all out on the nano challenge this year. I've been working on this book for people on the Autism spectrum and sort of showing how my conflicts are overcome with a little patience and perseverance. I just found the Story a Day challenge a month too late. I had fun giving it a go, however, and found it excited me in the way you feel excited when you're doing something new. I want to feel more of that!

Hope you're all well, take care.

I definitely admire those who jump head first into NANO. It's not for me, though. I write as much as I can, when I can.

I'm debating whether to do NANO this year, and which form of rebel I'd do if I did. I would work on the Highly Flavored Novel. I'm debating whether actively speeding up the writing would produce useful stuff. I think that at worst, it would be harmless.

Perhaps I'm just stubborn - but I tend to write fiction in certain months. However, for me, November isn't one of those months (generally, that is) - but December almost always seems to be - which is incredibly frustrating.

@Lew and I are doing it. In fact, 7 people in our Maryland Writers' Association chapter are going to do it. Got nothing to lose.

I've been trying to decide if I want to give nano a shot or just do a story-a-day. Leaning more towards story-a-day since that seems like a more achievable goal with how my life is right now. On the other hand, it'd be really cool to be able to say that I wrote two novels in 2017.

I have a question, why is November the month people choose to do these kinds of things*? (Maybe it's not actually, but it sure seems that way to me :p)

*By "these kinds of things" I mean a story a day, writing an entire novel, etc.

    Tradition.

Plus, summer is over and winter isn't here yet (or vice-versa for those living down south). So less reason to get out of the house and do something useful.

And, yeah, I'm definitely rebelling this year. I'm going to take one of my half-finished novels and rewrite it. I need to make some changes to the characters, and redo the story based on the amount I've learned about writing in the three or four years since I started it.

I'm also going to try to finish another novel at the same time, but probably won't count the words on that one.

I guess it's because we turn our focus inside after spending the summer outside more. Time to get introspective as opposed to sunburned.

People do this stuff in November because they like alliteration. :)

    That's how I feel.

For cheering each other on, there are forums to post weekly progress publicly. (Not one on this board, I don't think.)

The same who feel that 20K is a “book”, I guess.

The point is to get a rough copy done. Then you can go back and polish it, rework it, etc until you have a finished novel. Seems pretty straight forward to me. I'm going to do it for fun, and to finish the rough copy I have just started.

Well, I'm in two minds about working on my novel for the NaNo challenge. Firstly, I think the pace I've set for my novel is too slow and the content too deep to be able to get the 50,000 words written in a month (at the same quality as what I've done so far); my other idea is to write something completely unrelated and keep that book idea on the side for November. I was thinking about writing another romance, this time without holding back the physical relationship. Some might be expected.

@jedicounsellor I'm thinking of joining NaNo this year, just to train discipline!
I think it's a good idea to write a story that is unrelated to your current novel.
