Evening I wrote a review and when I went go edit, it said something was wrong for example it could be spam. I just went back and see no edit option. Is there a time limit to edit? Review: Blind Mans Sonnet Thanks!
Yep, for new members there's a cut-off on when you can go back and edit. I'm honestly not sure how it deters spam - a mod might be able to tell you - but I can tell you that it's not a bug. Once you've been around a bit, you'll be able to edit whenever
"New Members" are restricted when it comes to post editing. This limit is in place to prevent spam bots from first posting legit posts, and then editing them later to turn them into spam (and thus bypassing some of our spam filters). As soon as you have made 20 posts and have been a member for 14 days (I think) you should be able to edit your posts at will.
Thanks for that explanation! I never realised that the restriction on the edit function was there to foil spambots. Just thinking. Would it catch spambots if the restriction was on posting links rather than editing a post? Most spammers do include links, don't they? If the ability to post links was restricted to fully fledged members only, then new people who 'make a mistake' wouldn't be stuck with the mistake glaring at them for two weeks.
I guess it can go both ways. Im not sure spammers really edit posts but try to put everything in all on one post or repeative ones. On other forums its advertisements, making more then four or so threads within ten mons or so, and posting links. One sites solution was to limit links posts. Thats just from outside observer. Its easy to manuver in these type forum system so I understand spam restriction.
That and people like me on my mobile dont have automatic spelling catches. I edit my posts a lot so it csn fustrate someone whose first language isnt english or like most writers we tend to overedit for the best affect.
We have a spam filter that flags posts with links from new members, and other suspicious content. The thing is that most forums have those functions nowadays, so just spamming every forum on the web isn't a viable strategy anymore (at least not as viable as it once was). To bypass this issue (as well as some others), some spammers use "live spammers" (i.e. actual people that write the posts, so they actually look like legit answers to forum posts), while other might use post editing to insert their ads after a post has already passed through the spam filters and been approved (not sure how prevalent this strategy is). @jannert The problem with prohibiting links is that it is possible to get around that restriction really easily (e.g. by writing something like www(dot)writingforums(dot)org instead, or by just referencing the website/service by name). And if they post links they will be caught by our spam filters in 99% of the cases anyway (and the remaining 1% will be reported by members). @Unveiled Artist I also do a lot of editing of my posts (mainly in the first 10 minutes after posting) to fix typos or rewrite sentences, so I understand that it can be frustrating to see an error and not be able to fix it. However, it is only for the first 14 days and 20 posts that the time-limit for editing applies. During that time you could always double and triple-check your posts before posting them, to minimise errors.
Thank you. Whats going to slow me down is the reviewing. I like this type of forum layout. I go to two other Xforums.org or .com and notice it makes it easier to shift around.
