    Spiritual items for memory

Discussion in 'Research' started by Rumwriter, Nov 14, 2017.

Writing a script, and have a scene where the character is trying to find/remember something. The character is Jewish, but also spiritually open-minded, and I have an idea for a funny exchange with another character in which the woman has set up multiple totems or candles or whatever from different cultures in hopes of remembering what she's looking for, but they are actually all contradictory beliefs.

So, I'm just wondering what items she might use. I can make things up if I need to, but I'd really prefer to reference actual beliefs if possible. It could be jewelry, ceremonies, teas, totems, prayers/chants, music...buddhism and native american cultures might work well, because she's definitely a character who believes in a connection with the earth, but I'm open to any ideas.

I quite like the idea of someone hanging their religious symbols the wrong way up, or doesn't quite know where all the candles are supposed to go, or which festivals the symbols come from, just sort of a gestalt harvesting of whatever looked interesting at the time to them. So someone who's set up menorah with only three candles (or two candles and a birthday cake candle), a dreidel with buddhist writing on, a mandala with bits of persian writing, things like that.

If it was me writing it I'd have them hanging a Jain symbol the wrong way around so it's a nazi swastika but maybe that's a bit too far for a Jewish character *shrug*. I'd do it anyway ;)

Anthony of Padua is the catholic saint to pray for when help is needed to find something.

I'm not really looking for ideas/help on how to make this work. More just specific muses/gods/remedies people might know of.

I don't specifically know of anything, but perhaps you should look at this list you've given yourself...

And trawl books and search engines for religious jewellery in association with remembering things, ceremonies that are supposed to make you remember things, totems that are about remembering things, etc, exploring them one at a time. Psychics would also probably have some kind of spell they do with object X and object Y.

My apologies if you've already done this and come up with nothing, but you haven't mentioned it so I thought I would. :)

Google crystals or gemstones that are good for memory and / or clarity / repressed memories / finding lost things. There's probably something in there. Also look and see if there's anything for the Head Chakra. I'm not sure there is a head chakra, but I'd be surprised if there isn't one. I occasionally stumble upon this stuff when I'm searching for beads to make jewelry.
