    Testing (can't post?)

Discussion in 'Support & Feedback' started by archer88i, Nov 17, 2017.

Not sure what the deal is.

Hopefully things work this time. >.>

Edit: Well, that's troubling. Why can't I post in the Novels section?

Did you try to post the thread several times?

I see that you could post your thread if it was empty, and then edit the content in, roughly 30 minutes after this bug post. Did you try to post with content again after the 30 minutes, or did you just go directly to trying an empty post?

Can you try to post another thread in novels, with the same content, and see if it works? (If you can post the test thread, but can't delete it afterwards, just let me know and I'll remove it.)

I'm not sure what the deal was with the original failure. I had (parentheses) in the title and thought that might have been an issue. I also had an inline image link, and I thought, "Well, maybe that's against the rules or something," although it seemed odd that it would present as a 500 error rather than a validation thing... Anyway, after trying to post that several times, I was unable to connect to the site at all. (That's happened to me before under kind of similar circumstances, but nothing came of that bug hunt.)

Later, I switched to my phone's tethered connection and attempted posting again with the same content. This failed again, at which point I thought, "Ok, let me try this with a mostly empty post."

I will attempt to replicate the original content in a test post.

With the parentheses in the title and the image in the post body, along with the text of the scene, I was again unable to post.

We have had problems before with posts containing images, in various areas of the forum. Does it work if you remove the image (and any other links, including e.g. smileys).

ETA: Also, you are correct in that images are not allowed in Workshop posts (see the Forum Rules).

If that's an attempt to enforce a rule, then the error is not appropriate. Also, that's an awful rule and you should just expect that I will be civilly disobedient when necessary.

Thing is, if I keep testing it, I'll get kicked off again for an hour, so I'd rather not. :)

    Edit:

Regarding the rule, in fact, I disagree with your reading of the rule in question. That appears to be a rule against images as part of the work to be critiqued, because it's a list of other items that all relate to the work to be critiqued. It does not seem to unambiguously preclude simply having an unrelated image (say, a dog saying, "Please be nice!" with sad, soulful eyes) in the same posting as a workshop submission--say, as part of the preface.

I would recommend that the rule be reviewed with regard to its actual intent and then rewritten such as to be unambiguous.

The software is not trying to enforce the rule. It's a bug in the software (that, if I'm not mistaken, also occurs outside of the Workshop).

Regarding the rule itself, I honestly didn't even consider images that are not part of the actual work being critiqued. I will bring it up with the Mod Team and see if we should re-phrase it.

Also, could you send me a copy of the original post (including title, text, images, etc.) so I can do some testing with it to see if I can replicate the error?
