Quick writing prompt with a rather self explanatory title. Describe your character's (any character, MC, villain, side character) laugh. Aaron's was always mocking. Insincere. He smirked and snorted, but he was never overcome with the action or gasping for breath. It was so controlled it was artificial and it left one wondering if he was capable of feeling anything at all.
Seymour's laughter always disturbed those within earshot. Some said it resembled the laughter of a hyena during a dark African night. Others swore that it sounded like howling of a wolf at the full moon. Still others that it was a mixture of both interspersed with keening and barking of a rabid dog about to attack. But to his mother it was the sound of an angel's song straight from God's heaven accompanied by golden harps.
Darian's laugh was a beautiful thing. Even when he was mocking someone, his laughter was full of warmth and life and invited people in. It meshed well with his messy, laid-back appearance, and made him seem that much more approachable. Any time he laughed, it seemed genuine and and sincere. Never mind the fact that it was fake. Everything about Darian was fake.
Kathryn's laugh is just like the rest of her--sweet and genuine. When she laughs, she makes you want to make her laugh again and again, just so you can hear that sound and see her giggly smile as much as possible. If you didn't already love her just from talking to her, her laugh would probably change that. She looks like a snobby rich girl at first glance, but all you have to do is tell her a joke to see that it's not true. Sapphire's laugh is a rare thing, which makes it all the better when you hear it. For just an instant, the emotional pain that you can constantly see in her eyes if you try disappears, and in that moment, she's happy. She doesn't force laughter for things that don't deserve it, so when she does laugh, it's one of genuine amusement. It's not infectious like Kathryn's, but like Sapphire herself, it's real. But anyone who knows Sapphire knows not to make her laugh. Because after that laugh? Comes the aftermath. It's nothing extremely noticeable, but once you see it, you just can't look away. Her eyes get a wistful, lonely look, even if she's in the middle of a crowd. It's like she's remembering something…or someone.
Jill's laugh is sudden, loud, with a smile from ear to ear, or nothing at all. No in between's with this one.
Dan's laugh can light up the mood of a dozen guys who just came back from their divorce lawyers. It can melt the hearts of all the girls within a six mile radius. His laugh is neither manly nor feminine, it's more like a loud, happy yelp that shows Dan's utter happiness with the world.
Well, one of my main characters isn't human, so her laugh is a fair bit higher pitched than the generic range of adult humans in real life, perhaps like a child or fairy. It's in the territory between innocent and mischievous. The laugh would sound something like "hee hee hee" if you closed your lips while saying it. Her brother's is similar, but not mischievous and has a bit of a nervous tinge to it. My other main character is a giant, so his laugh is kind of booming and can make you jump if you're not used to it. It also carries hints of his wisdom and calm. Sounds something like "Oh ho ho ho" deep, rich, and earnest.
He heard a soft thump behind him and turned to see a girl standing with a crude dagger at the ready. Never a dull moment in the Red Light District, he thought. He brought his cane down across her head and convulsed with laughter. It was the very lass he'd come to see.
My character's laugh?? I can honestly say that in all the years I've been writing fiction, not once have I imagined what my character's laugh is like I'm beginning to wonder if I even like my characters. I sure as hell don't care about them.
Elyse's laugh is sweet and honest, a rare jem that only few people can call forwards. It's full of her spirit- quiet yet real, filled with a tender joy. Arianna has two laughs. One makes others tremble, asserts her royalty- it's a practiced laugh, drenched in cold, haughty aristocracy and slithering silver. It carves a mask out of her face, one that covers her in lies. But the other is deep, true, a laugh pouring out of her with a smile that splits her mask in two. It shows you a glimpse of who she is behind the frozen beauty, and when Arianna laughs, if you look hard enough, you can see pain lacing her grey eyes.
