    Dorothy Must Die Sucked

Discussion in 'Discussion of Published Works' started by MilesTro, Nov 23, 2017.

Had anyone read this book, which was written by Danielle Paige? I only listened to it on an audiobook because I was too busy writing. But I stopped listening to it after I reached Chapter 20. I like the concept, but the writing is terrible. And nothing makes sense in that book, even if it takes place in a magical world? Warning: this thread can have spoilers. The villains are flat, the story is cliche', and the main character is treated like a two-year-old. Plus the romantic tenses is cheesy as !@#$! It seems this series is trying to be like the Hunger Games in the Wizard of Oz. A teenage gets transported into a dystopia world, she must train to learn how to defeat the evil empire, and she gets a love interest. She is also stupid, and the characters treated her as if she was a child. And the villains are flat as a pancake. Why make Dorothy a villain? I know that is interesting, but Dorothy? Her character is dumb too, but she is sweet. In this book, she becomes a greedy ass queen bee slut who wants to !@#$ up everything because magic made her do it. Using magic as an excuse is so lazy. It's like saying Hitler turned evil because he smoked too much crack. Anakin Skywalker becoming Darth Vader was more believable than Dorothy's path to the dark side. He had development and the reason why he turned to the dark side. The Force didn't turn him evil. He did it to himself! Maybe it will explain more in the series, but the story made me complain about it too much. Probably because it isn't my cup of tea. The author wrote it for teen girls and to make money. But it fell flat to me. What do you think?

Hello! I read this book a while back and honestly, it just wasn't for me. I didn't feel too much of anything when I read the book and that's usually what I like. I like to feel like I am experiencing what the characters are experiencing. I couldn't quite hate Dorothy because I didn't really understand this new role she had taken on. I was a little annoyed with Amy throughout the whole book but that's a common feeling for me when characters are not well put together. The whole thing was just wild and messy. It really missed the mark. I think if this story was created without riding the coat-tails of the Wizard of Oz I could enjoy it a little more. It's like you said it's just hard to believe that Dorothy would transform into this monstrous being sucking all the magic out of Oz. Why is it so hard for me to believe? Because Dorothy wasn't ever portrayed as a bad person. She was good at heart. Why would she go through all the trouble she went through in Oz to destroy the place? I just couldn't understand why the author would turn or try to turn what is easily believed to be a wholesome character into something dark. Especially since the only thing that seemed to make her turn dark was the fact that she had access to magic. I needed a little something more like maybe one day her entire family was massacred right in front of her eyes so she turned cold and ruthless and then become power hungry. Not "Oh I've got a little magic, lets get power hungry". It just doesn't work.

The author did write a prequel that probably explains how Dorothy turns evil, but I didn't read it. I don't know if I wanted to read. Sometimes you have to read the entire series in order to understand it, which can be frustrating. If the first book doesn't grab you, then why should you read the next one? I liked the original series of The Wizard of Oz. It sucks that people are allowed to rip it apart for money. :(
