Intoxicated, yes - he shouldn't be driving. But passed out to the point his parents thought he was dead? No. There's something else at work here.

IMO the best advice on this thread is to see your doctor... point of note here is if you are on (or have recently been on) antidepressants or anti anxiety meds you shouldn't be drinking alcohol at all ... that would explain four beers getting you absolutely slaughtered.

That aside just as the secret to being a writer is to write, the secret to not having an alcohol problem is not to drink (or not to drink to excess) - if you think you are drinking too much, just don't - if its Friday night with the boys that triggers it, don't go out on Friday night. I know its a lot easier to say then do, but if you are drinking four a night and that's a problem its better to act now rather than wait until you are doing 12 every night and a fifth of JD for breakfast

Friday seems to be the major trigger for me. The rest of the week I can pretty much restrain myself from alcohol entirely, only allowing myself one bottle if I personally wished. In any rate, Friday is definitely 'no alcohol forever' for me.

Are you taking any medications that could interact with it? I'm freakishly sensitive to most drugs, and I almost never drink, but four beers still don't knock me out. I have trouble focusing, and I end up stumbling around a lot, but I'm still awake and (mostly) intelligible. My guess is 6 or 7 would knock me on my ass, but I'm too wimpy to try. And the headaches are a bitch.

    @Link - it's Friday.

Have you seen your doctor yet? If not, what's your strategy for not drinking tonight?

    Wait, it’s Friday already?

Damn. I hadn’t even considered drinking. I’ve been pumping myself full of nutrient drinks between the main meal courses.

Huh. It’s Friday at 7:00 pm and I’ve no desire to drink alcohol. Instead all I want to do is drink more nutrients and play Horizon: Zero Dawn.

YAAAAY! I DIDN’T DRINK ANY ALCOHOL YESTERDAY!! OR FOR THE WHOLE WEEK FOR THAT MATTER!!!

I’ve been drinking nutrient milks when I had the urge late at night (two boosts a day) and it’s done wonders. No hangover, no guilt/shame, nothing! YAAAAYY!!!

Question, I read that there might be some emotional episodes coming from the not drinking for a week. What does that mean, exactly??

    Where did you read it?

I can see if someone has been really struggling with addiction they might have some emotional processing to do once they lose their favourite way of delaying pain, but I don't really expect that will apply in your case.

"Emotional episodes" after getting clean from drugs and alcohol are normal. Usually, though, this applies to people who are physically addicted to substances and have been self-medicating for years. When people are suddenly sober after long periods of inebriation and numbing, they are overwhelmed by all the emotions: grief, guilt, shame, etc. that they had refused to deal with in their addiction. Physically, it's exhausting to deal with alcohol withdrawal, which only works to compound the mental hardships that these people face.

So, emotional episodes are a thing, and whether or not you'll have them depends on quite a lot of factors mostly revolving around the severity of your problem with alcohol.

If you find yourself a little extra on edge or emotional, try eating a nib of chocolate to bring your endorphins up and try a bit of meditation or prayer to get yourself emotionally centered again.

ETA: Pretty sure I actually meant serotonin, but endorphins are good, too. A nice long run, if your able, is also something that can help.

And it's probably compounded when they recall all the years they spent drunk or high, so not only would they have to deal with the issues that caused them to go down that route in the first place, but also have to deal with the shame and regret inherited upon learning of all the years they lost to the drug.

For the past few nights I've been waking up...emotional. The dreams (if I had any) weren't scary or tragic...I'd just wake up with a heaving chest and a spinning mind. The fact this started right when I cut off from the alcohol, a week in, cannot be just a coincidence...

I've been warned by doctors not to look up symptoms beforehand... so while the emotional part might be because you quit the alcohol, it could as well be stress mixed with expectations on how you should feel.

That said - take care of yourself and try distract your brain with good things!

If you haven't seen a doctor yet, I'd suggest going and asking for some help with those symptoms. The less painful quitting is, the more likely, I'd think, it is that you'll be able to stay quit.

That could also be to do with coming off your anti anxiety meds ... see a doctor.

I strongly doubt its anything to do with the alcohol - four pints once a week is no where near enough for physical withdrawal symptoms
