The skunk-thing is rather heart-warming and it has a little more "ommph" if cotton-thing was used earlier. But in makes sense that the little girl in the story would use cotton. Earlier in the story she had to deal with a dead body and it made her barf. Days later she needs to go to a place she knows a body will be and it would be only logical that she would attempt to block the smell.

Ahaaa. Yeah if the character is a little girl, then it would make sense. It would actually serve as rather cute kid logic :)

I'm a ranger team leader on a coastal property - all sorts of really gross stuff washes up from time to time and its our job to get rid of it so the public don't have to encounter it

That said if i ever get another floating freezer container i'm paying for specialists as that was truly fucking grim .. dead livestock is just part of the day to day (the knacker man won't take it if its rotten , and generally the contractors who will insist on it being 'at the roadside')

Both the tongue and the olfactory nerves are involved in taste. And blocking the nasal passages in the nose would not block the olfactory nerves, they are wide open via the pharynx (back of the mouth).

At most something strong like menthol would mask the smell, but odor stimulating molecules would not be blocked from reaching the olfactory nerve endings.

I don't know if there are any molecules in decomposing flesh that are registered on the tongue. But given taste is a combination of both the tongue and olfactory sensors, I agree, mouth breathing might add the sensation of 'tasting' the smell.

I found this discussion of the molecules involved to be quite interesting: Why death smells so deadly
Chemoreception is fascinating. Once I heard tires skidding, I was in the backyard and the car skidding was a house and lot away from my yard. Almost instantly I could smell the burning rubber. It was so close to instantaneous it got me imagining just how fast the responsible molecules had travelled from the street to my yard.

    But I digress.

Why was there dead livestock in a freezer floating in an ocean...?

And why on earth are you still in this job!? It sounds horrifying!

It was a reefer (ie a refrigerated cargo container in which meat is shipped ... when you see say new zealand lamb in the supermarket... that's how it gets here) which i assume had been washed overboard from a cargo ship which is pretty common for cargo containers in a storm- because there's air inside them they float, but they aren't generally fully watertight so they fill up to about 1-2 thirds full of sea water, and generally float below the surface.

Because its a total hazard to navigation, when they are spotted the lifeboats or coast guard tow them in drop them on the nearest beach, after which its the lucky lot of the landowner to get rid of it - if you can trace it you can claim against the ships insurance but most of the time you can't

99% of the time its just a cargo container full of electronics or car parts or whatever and after sitting in the ocean its just skippable crap (or sometimes worth something as scrap metal), so you bust the lock, unload it into a skip and then a local scrappy torches up the container and takes it away.

This time when we bust open the lock we found it to be full of rotten sides of meat - very very rotten sides of meat - the smell was bloody dreadful , I was sick almost immediately. We did get contractors to shift the meat but someone had to supervise them, and as a responsible leader i couldn't very well leave that to the junior staff.

As to why i'm still in the job, i wouldn't want to give the impression that this is the total workload - in 6 years ive been doing it we've had three cargo containers (only one of which had rotten meat in) and maybe 12 incidences of dead livestock or dolphins.... the horse was a neighboring team but that was an all hands on deck job.

The thing is when it does occur - its down to me to lead from the front, it wouldn't be ethical to ask the team to deal with this grim shit if i wasn't willing to get stuck in myself. (top tip - when confronted with a dead dolphin tie a rope to its tail and tow it with a dinghy - do not under any circumstances try and grab it round the middle and lift it)

I always forget the other, probably original meaning of "ranger". I had you in a zodiac with a supressed bullpup for a moment there.

In the Uk we don't have army rangers - our equivalent would be the Parachute regiment
    Pathfinder company.

though that said there are many times when the zodiac would be useful and the occasional moment when a suppressed bullpup would also come in handy :D

(There isn't a direct american equivalent of what we do - I suspect the National Parks service come closest)

You had me imagining you opened a fridge with actual dead livestock - as in, the full cow with its head and hooves and all and bloodied eyes. Sides of meat ain't livestock man!!

As for "how to get rid of a dead dolphin" - that sounds like you learnt from bitter experience...

In theory if you find a dead dolphin (or other cetacean ) you are supposed to take a photo and measure length, girth and cause of death to send to the MCS... I would say from bitter experience that that probably sounded like a great idea in a nice warm office where the data is processed, but in practice what does "girth" tell you when its dread and bloated anyway ... best to just tow it into deep water and deep six that sucker

Don't know if you got the answer about corpse odor, but I used Tiger Balm. 10% camphor and 11% menthol. Didn't make it smell good, but you could survive.

I’m also a scientist (software and physics.)

Yes, you taste smells. Your tongue and nose work together almost all the time.

And yes, if you block your nose, the cavity will fill with whatever went into your lungs. It’ll be subtle because the pressure is more or less not very high, but entropy will cause it to all eventually mix.

Also, how much would a corpse actually smell?

Fresh corpses don’t smell, only rotting ones do. Autopsies are done quickly after death, any rotting would contaminate the results. The corpses are also kept cold until they’re ready.

I imagine the smell is like a butcher shop, not compost. You’re probably thinking it’d be like a slaughter house instead of a butcher shop, but slaughter houses do things in bulk and they aren’t sterile.

Ah, Pinky. Popped his head up and took a couple random drunken swings at me a few months before he finally was shown the exit by the previous team.

I have nothing but best wishes for him in all his future endeavors, but if he ever needs a reference, mine will be quite honest. :)
