    Broken Ankle: Eight Months Later

Discussion in 'Research' started by Seren, Jan 16, 2018.

When I last saw her, my protagonist had broken her ankle (not severely enough to require surgery.) I'm writing a new book set eight months later that will involve her having to do some running around, chasing the bad guys down. I've managed to gather lots of research on what it's like eight months after a break for people who did have to have surgery, but not for people who didn't.

So I was wondering how running is going to affect her eight months on. (Just to clarify again: she did not require surgery.) Will it hurt almost as soon as she starts running, only after a while, or not at all? And what about after a long day on her feet/walking around? Will it ache then? Will she have a slight limp all the time, after she's stressed it by running/a long day on her feet, or never? Etc. You get my gist. :)

My sister fractured her ankle in a similar way and she was up-and-running within six months. However, it wasn't a bad fracture. The worse the fracture, the longer it takes. I've severely sprained an ankle enough to pull the ligament and knot it; I couldn't run even at eight months because it still caused pain.

Your main character could possibly have a limp and it could possibly start to ache after a day's work. She likely will feel pain even after eight months when it comes to running if it had been that severe of a break particularly if she didn't take of herself after the break.
