Anyone seem HBO's Rome? Not bad. Good acting, character and dialogue, and it seems more factually accurate and reflective of it's time than your typical historical drama. Atia is one of the less accurate characters as she is made of two different people but she's such a delightful sociopath. (Plus I like that she genuinely seems to care about her kids despite herself). The scene with her and the bull ritual was a really nice touch with depicting some of the more occult tones in the culture.
I'm taking this new Altered Carbon show out for a spin. I haven't read the books, so I can't say how good an adaptation it is, but I'm really liking it. Only seen the first episode so far, but it seems like a good story with nice visuals.
Re-watching my Band of Brothers box set. Brilliant and humbling to a degree that makes me feel pretty much worthless.
Binged my way through Spanish series La casa de papel this weekend on Netflix. Haven't been that hooked on a series in a long time. There's an English dub that's actually not bad (unlike usual), but I preferred to watch in Spanish with subtitles for that extra authenticity. Much like could be said of shows like Prison Break, don't expect it to be realistic, but to be thoroughly entertained. All the team in the heist are so likable and so frustrating at the same time, only because they show off the various flaws that make them human. The impetuous, hot-headed, reckless decisions that they make that is just so infuriating to watch, yet satisfying at the same time. The tension and dynamic between the hostage-takers is what really makes the show shine. And it's only a limited series of 2 seasons. So unlike most shows, it doesn't drag on well past its sell-by date, and knows when it's run its course.
Oh my various gods. I just finished this show, Happy!, which is brand new to my local Netflix. Deliciously depraved, gloriously insane, and Goddamned hilarious. Looks like the 2nd season is en route, which is excellent. We need more of this. Much more.
Did you ever watch My Name is Earl? I don't understand more than a few sentences in Spanish, and all of those are fighting words, but I read that when the Latina maid was yelling in Spanish at one of the characters, she sounded quite irate, but actually said: or, "I want to thank all our Latin audience for tuning in every week. And to those that are not Latin congratulations on learning another language!"
Great series on BBC Four at the moment - Tomorrow's Worlds. It's a show about science fiction, where each episode is dedicated to a different obsession of the genre. Last week was alien invasion. This week it's robots. Lots of film talk/clips and 'opinions' from various talking heads.
Anyone else on here watch King of the Hill? I've just started watching it recently (although I've known about it for a while) and am currently on season 6.
Yeah, I first saw it recently on TV, but all the episodes were from the later seasons, so I found all of them on YouTube and started watching them in order
It's a weird show in that none of the characters age except for when... Joseph? gets his growth spurt, then time freezes again.
That's not exactly true, in the first season Bobby is 11 (they mention it at some point), and at some point in the 5th or 6th season he has his 13th birthday party. Also in the 6th season Nancy turns 40, and as you mentioned, Joseph has that growth spurt. Although, I think Bobby stays 13 from season 6 'till the show ends though, which is a bit odd I also like the fact that the show isn't afraid to have things change. Characters die, relationships change, etc. In most cartoons everything is the same at the end of the show's lifetime as it was when it started.
The second season of Fauda is available on Netflix! Two episodes in, and my god, is this show tense. Though I guess what makes Fauda even scarier to watch are the recent develops between Israel and Palestine. It's getting almost too real.
I don't know the show and don't want to go Debate Room, but the Israel / Palestine issue has always been far more real than any movie or TV show could ever portray.
It's very realistic, and I feel it's not just showing the Israeli side of the story. What makes me slightly sick in the stomach is that sometimes I feel the line between the actor and character blurs. The cast are living the stories the show tells IRL. The main character is played by Lior Raz who in real life enlisted to Unit 217 (who were elite soldiers) and apparently later worked as Arnold Schwarzenegger's bodyguard. I sometimes wonder how the cast, consisting of both Arab and Israeli actors, get along behind the scenes with the new real life tensions in the air. Interestingly enough, the show has been renewed for a 3rd season. I doubt Netflix would renew it if it was pure occupation propaganda.
I may be one of the few in the world who actually watches this, but has anyone seen The Shannara Chronicles? I'm finished with season 2 and very sad to hear that, as of right now, it's been cancelled. In my humble opinion, season 1 was much better than season 2, as the show has become the live action version of a harem anime (every female character seems to be in love with the male protagonist), but it was still pretty good.
I watched a little bit of that one at some point. It felt a little...campy(?) I suppose. Couldn't get into it. I didn't like it enough, apparently, because I totally forgot about it after watching three or four episodes. I've been watching Supergirl again because the third season showed up on Netflix. There are no words for my feelings about Melissa Benoist.
It was definitely a campy series. I watched it with the sole intent of being entertained, and it did that much. It's not gonna change your life, that's for sure. However, if they had continued, I fear they may have fallen into what I affectionately call "The Dragonball Z Dilemma" where they feel the need to continue making each new villain bigger and bigger until they get to ridiculous levels. Season three of Supergirl is up on Netflix now? I'll need to check that out, loved the first two seasons. DONT' YOU DARE SPOIL IT FOR ME!
Wouldn't dream of it, haha. I have a difficult time paying attention to anything in that show outside of Ms. Benoist anyway.
I watched four minutes of season 1, episode 1 of 9-1-1 before my wife managed to stop me from punching the TV to death. Three calls. A kid not conscious or breathing where she tells the mom to do CPR. Kind of, not proper instructions or anything like them, just some babbling about how many beats/breaths she should be doing, despite that being out of date, then she whinges about how mommy hung up on her as soon as the medics arrived. No, you should have hung up on mommy as soon as the medics arrived and got on to your next call, there are people out there dying to talk to you. Next call she's shooting the breeze for god* knows how many minutes with someone who's called in a potential jumper. FD is on the scene, up top with the suicidal person, and dispatch is still yapping with this random dude on the ground. On. To. Your. Next. Call. Which is someone apparently complaining about getting bad service at Mickey D's. I say "apparently" because Buffy the Soon-To-Be-Unemployed calltaker tells the complainant that it's against the law to call for non-emergencies (I'll give that one a pass, it wasn't in my jurisdiction but it may be in some), curses at her, and hangs up without making any attempt to ascertain if there was an emergency. Perhaps the complainant was trying to slip a message through, perhaps the complainant was going to settle her McNuggets dispute with a firearm, we'll never know. Y'wanna know how many suspension days I took for a similar fuckup? Prosecutor ruled it a justifiable homicide in the end, but the fact remained that the "Dispatcher Aschendale failed to ascertain if any of the parties were armed before ending the call, putting both the safety of the citizens and the responding officers potentially at risk." "Potentially" because there were multiple calls, and my coworkers didn't fuck up the way I did. Yeah, nice vacation that was. Spoiler: * Enlil, broad dias, white dias, &c...
