I'm a curmudgeon who hates and distrusts everything that's come out of the Internet since 2002, YouTube and YouTubers included. For me this is 100% an illegitimate gripe because (1) I'm a millennial so I'm "supposed" to have a higher affinity for this stuff, (2) it bothers me when people older than me complain about technology, and (3) I watch YouTube videos.

Now I'm just annoyed at myself...

Back on the topic of TTAMBS ... people who upload albums or tracks to youtube with substandard audio... I just clicked through four different Springsteen compilations before i found one I could listen to without wanting to put the laptop through the window.

Must agree with this. I hate the ones that sound like they are being played through a glass of water.

Earning millions from screaming "HEY GUYS!" and then playing video games while people watch is morally reprehensible when you consider that nurses and teachers earn fuck all for doing a job which is actually worthwhile.

That's not a YouTube problem. That's a society problem. The people earning the money are just cashing in. I don't think "morally reprehensible" applies to all of them. Let me caveat this by saying that some of them are morally reprehensible. Also, I'm not a fan of YouTube in general, except when trying to learn how to do something.

Maybe, but who's the fool in all this? Blame the morons who subscribe and support these people, not the ones banking their income.

People who can't decide which among the common expressions to end up their emails with, so include a couple. And on this note I'll leave this thread.

To be honest hardly anyone does - if it was that simple everyone would be doing it (including all the teachers and nurses who need a side income)

Reminds me of when we were at school and we persuaded a gullible class mate the Bohica was latin for farewell and often used to sign off letters (It is of course really an acronym for 'Bend over, here it comes again') I was a delightful child

I didn’t say it was the fault of YouTube. A society where children can earn millions for doing nothing productive while civil servants struggle to pay their bills is immoral in the extreme in my opinion.

The fact that it happens at all indicates that something is fundamentally fucked in society.

How many of these children are actually earning millions in a verified way rather than just "yeah man i earn like millions, its totally sick" - in the latter case I guess slightly less than 100 a month is 'like millions'

So it’s immoral for them utilize a medium to make themselves a good living? Again, you seem to be blaming YouTube(ers) when your hostility should be aimed elsewhere. That said, you seem to take an extreme stance on a lot of things. That’s cool, man. Do whatever makes you happy. I’m not here to argue about morals.

People can buy and sell these videos, I'm not saying they can't do that. If someone wants to make money and puts some free videos on YouTube with links to a bunch more videos behind a paywall (and yes, I know YouTube doesn't really provide that service anymore) that feature more of the same, I wouldn't have a problem with it so long as they're not asking money for the product they 'gave away' already. YouTube as a platform provides many opportunities for actually making money through advertising revenue, creating sponsored videos, or just being a showcase for skills and products that are sold elsewhere. Instead of asking people for money because they 'can't afford' to keep producing lazy material, they should either make better material so YouTube as a platform becomes profitable for them, or get a job that doesn't require you to get a job that ask strangers for a handout just to get by.

Now... I if you liked this post, give it a like. If you didn't, you know what to do. And if you want to see more of these, consider donating, because as we all know, writing posts take time and time is money and this is money I'm spending on you. Which makes you a horrible person for reading this and not giving back. My DogeCoin address is below:

theres an interesting article here on youtubing as an income stream, which includes thus snippet

    ETA (the link helps) https://devumi.com/2016/12/1-million-youtube-views-much-youtube-pays-milestone/

"YouTube comedian Olga Kay revealed that she spends around $500 – $700 a week on filming and editing her comedy skits. She currently has just under a million subscribers that bring her around $100,000 – $300,000 gross earnings annually. That is not her ‘take-home’ pay though:

    • YouTube takes around 45% of those earnings
    • The IRS gets their cut
    • Production costs must also be taken into account
At the end of the day, she ends up with around $21,000 net income from her videos. That take-home pay is considerably less than the average personal income for many Americans her age, which is around $25,000-$31,000."

From those costs we can extrapolate that net income is about a tenth of gross take (the vast majority is probably going on advertising to maintain their veiwing rate) so top youtubers like that tit pewdipie arent really making $15m they are making just over a million from a gross take of 15. and most youtubers are making far less (I'd bet that a fair number are making a loss)

No, it is a better future. You don't want to work in the Civil Service. James Burke says cash will be irrelevant, so just hold on. Though for myself I don't think I'll make it that far, maybe a robo-hoover that talks to me? I'll give it hell in the bedroom.

I mean, as a teacher of course I immediately go "Yeah! YEAH!" to these types of sentiments. :p But it's true that the YouTuber thing is only a symptom. The way wealth is distributed and changes hands in this society is bonkers. Remember that Kickstarter campaign that raised $50,000 for a potato salad recipe? Damn, I've got a great sense of humor normally, but that actually pissed me off. What a waste.

But given the state of the economy and the job market, college loan debt, and the fact that many worthwhile careers pay garbage, I can't blame young adults for trying to find unusual ways to make bank.
