Despite my referring to her as Mrs. A, my wife didn't take my surname when we got married. I'm cool with that, I couldn't imagine giving mine up and taking hers. Some people hyphenate their names together, but we decided against that since Japanese legal documents don't really have room for the concept. Still, hyphenating is a reasonable way to represent your union to the world.

Until it isn't. One of my colleagues has Eastern European ancestry, and he married a woman from Indonesia. I've swapped out their real names for similar ones from their respective ancestries to protect their privacy, but can you imagine being introduced to Mr. and Mrs. Przybyszewski-Sulistiorini?

I love that!I wouldn't give up mine, either. All of Dad's relatives had girls, and as the youngest I'm the last one with Dad's family's name.

If they have children, I feel sorry for the poor kids having to learn to write it. "But Mom I'm tired and need to rest..."

A friend of mine and his now-wife both had double-barrelled names before they got married. The combination they picked to run with was based on what would fit easily on internet forms.

Another consideration: If they have a kid who participates in sports, the name has to fit on the back of the jersey. ;)

Yes, but if they're planning on a life of crime (and what parent doesn't hope little Johnny will be knocking over convenient stores before he turns 18?), double barreled names fuck with LEADS (the Law Enforcement Agencies Data System) something fierce, and Johnny Matsushima-Garcia doesn't even need to lie. Half the time the arresting officer is going to enter "Matsushima" as a middle name, half the time he's going to slam them together without the hyphen, and the third half of the time he'll misspell something. It quadruples your chances of those outstanding warrants not coming up when they run you through the computer.

There's a reason I teach English and not math.

Third option: Be born of another planet, and a language no one on earth speaks.
Then they will try looking for some incomprehensible gibberish. :p

Over the course of two days it's gone from cold enough to have the fire on all night, to so hot I don't know what to do with myself.

    British weather is mentally disabled!

    The mixed feelings thread.

Mrs. A is out of town for the weekend for a memorial for her mom. It's been a year, or nearly, so... yeah, not going to give details of what needs to be accomplished, sorry.

But anyway, that means I've got the weekend to myself, save for a part-time gig tomorrow. Inshallah, I'll get some writing done. In a past life, it would have been a chance to go crazy, but I'm busy dieting, so it's actually a chance to not go crazy (we kinda handled that one Wednesday night when the beer got hold of me).

So... a quiet weekend in, eating salad and writing.

    Hmm.

ETA: Also, I've been up since 3am, when I needed to see her off to the airport. At least the hangover is gone.

If you'd asked me last week if I liked dates (the edible type) I'd have shrugged my shoulders in a, they're-okay-but-I'd-never-buy-them kind of way. That was until I tried a Medjoul date. They're sold at Morrisons and cost £4.00 per box (about 20p per date). They're humongous things, very sweet and jammy, and bloody gorgeous!
