Interesting, that's really a thing? So they were reading out your story? Why the rage Mat, sounds awesome? Don't worry, DR, I'm sure you'll get picked up. What's this queue thing?
This phenomenumum has many parallels. We project: 'Oscar, hold the submission clicker a moment. I've spotted a quite fantastic usage of metaphor in second person.' 'I got you Stan, y'know there's twenty-four million submissions to process till Tuesday?' 'Wow!' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wow!_signal 'Stan, Stan...can you read me, over?' Chapter 2 'You know darling, they wouldn't stop the tracker for just anybody? I sense greatness with this one. Originally I thought the chicken fart story was kind of puerile. It's got legs, I think we should celebrate. More wine? As I said to the guys on the forum...' 'Nnnn...nnn...' '...I said it was a crock of shit. You said it was a crock of shit if I recall. You said I should "go wash more cars..." 'NNNN...' ... 'Stan!' 'Got it! Sorry Oscar...I sneezed on the widescreen. I thought it said Chekov; a slip of the tongue, carry on...'
NO @Krispee - that's what I want them to do...y'know raise my profile, I'm pretty bottom-feeder atm, I slipped in the 'rankings,' only a mid-career, y'know, trajectile error. I'll be back.
Ha, I'm sure you will, onward and upward, as they say. It would be nice if that happened though, as long as they had the right actor. Getting Sir Ian McKellen might cost a bit, perhaps a B lister.
When I had one out at Apex, they used Moksha, and it shows the queue. It steadily dropped, dropped, dropped, then held steady at 95 for a few days. I looked one morning, still at 95, then had a rejection within two hours of that. So, I don’t know how accurate those things are.
Sounds like they were going through them at a steady rate then decided to blitz it and do them all at once. It all sounds rather weird, what am I getting myself into.
Errr... I've been sending out submissions all morning, but some places that are supposed to open today aren't. Is anyone else running into this problem with certain submission managers? These places say they open for submissions Sept. 1 (today), but the submission managers are down. It's not everywhere, but it's kind of throwing a wrench in my plans. I think I can still get some more out to the glossies that stay open year round. Maybe after the long weekend these places will really open. How's everyone else doing with submissions? It's taking me some time because I am going over each story one more time before hitting send. Hope everyone's fall submissions turn into future sales.
I tried to get an automated email response from Ploughshares (to create an account) but have heard nothing from them, I thought it might be because of the weekend, no-one working, and they'd shut everything down. I can't do anything until I get that and they validate my email address. Tin House have validated though.
@Krispee -- The submission system at Ploughshares can be, but if you run into a problem send an email to the general "contact us" email. I had to do it once before. They got back to me quick and were super nice and helpful. Plus, I totally think they are going to dig your style. It's very much in line with what I've read in their pages in the recent past in terms of style and well-crafted prose. And you have a killer story. Welcome to the world of submitting!
Turns out I wasn't as stuck as I wanted to be. Just got a 41-day form rejection from Strange Horizons.
Well, just submitted my very first story, ever. Got a few more magazines I can do but I'll wait until next week to do those.
I’ve been fussing over my sub(s) ...day off on Wednesday so maybe fire a couple more into hyperspace...
I managed to send out a few. Before each story went out I gave it one more pass so the process was a bit more time consuming. I always think my stories are edited and polished before they go out, but I don't think there's anything wrong with a bit more of that this time around. I've grown up some and my writing has as well. I want it to be my best work before an editor each time. I actually have a few stories that aren't out anywhere because they needed more time and weren't easy fixes (or at least weren't easy fixes on the spot). So, I've now got 14 stories out spread across 35 submissions. I would like to get up to 50 submissions out. I've done it before, and the fall is the easiest time for that. FYI for new submitters -- a lot of places open Sept. 1. Then there are more that open Sept. 15 and Oct. 1 and so on. If anyone needs help finding good places to submit or suggestions, you can post here are message me. I believe there is room at the top for everyone. So, let's start publishing or start publishing more or reaching higher ground with where our stories and end up. And don't be disheartened if it takes many rejections to get there. Like a lot of you know, I easily racked up 100 rejections in the last 12 months alone. But publication can make it all worth it. Good luck all my submitting friends!!!
@deadrats - I can honestly say that every time I open up one of my stories, even though I've been through it a hundred times, I can still find something to improve. The best and worst thing about art.
Just to let you know, I have been reading your passages, some interesting and thought provoking stuff in there, nice job.
Rejected by The Idaho Review. It was a form rejection that came in the mail. I would like to think I'm good at keeping track of what I send where I send what, but this one's a mystery.
Thank you very much. Like I mentioned, it's a humble platform. I might plan on releasing a print anthology in the future but for now it's just a nice hobby.
