    Vikings, an Archeologists, and Greenland

Discussion in 'Research' started by L.E., Sep 21, 2018.

So I'm writing a story with Vikings and an Archeologist from present time. I'm sure I'll need more help further on, but at this moment I have one question if anyone knows please help!:) Is there some kind of fine if an archeologist keeps back an artifact found? I've tried searching this out but can't find anything. Oh, and a small question that sounds silly, but has anyone here gone to Greenland? What does it smell like there? It is a question that is not something people think to ask before visiting....;)

The punishment for artifact theft depends on who your character works for - a university, private group, museum etc. Could you give more information ?

A proper archaeologist isn't going to keep anything back; they're trained and educated in Cultural Resource Management along with the repercussions of breaking CRM laws. Most also have a huge respect for their field and what they find. That being said, it depends on the laws of the country and sometimes specific areas within a country.

Greenland falls under the Kingdom of Denmark and they might follow their laws on archaeology: http://www.archaeology.dk/upl/14843/AF2809EdLyne.pdf .

I thought the lost Vikings were in Vinnland (nova scotia) there were lots of Vikings in greenland, and few were lost

Also Greenland doesn't smell of anything much on account of how bloody cold it is - the ports smell of diesel. machine oil, and fish … like any other working hsrbour

I figured any proper archeologist would not withhold/steal an artifact...but for my particular story and character, it works. thank you for your help☺
In the late 15th century the group of Vikings who lived in Greenland seemed to have disappeared...for possible reasons of economic, starvation, disease, it is not completely known. later on more vikings came along, but the original vikings seemed to have disappeared without any written accounts of why and how.
