Character Sacrifices Everything To Bring Back a Loved One

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by LordWarGod, Sep 23, 2018.

    Basically, in a nutshell:

My character made a blood pact with the Suffering Gods to receive great power and they demanded one thing from him, to get the entire universe to go to war with itself. This was so the Suffering Gods could feed off the suffering in the universe and gain enough power to open a portal into the universe to let their demon legions in. He does this, all life in the universe is wiped out, the universe is corrupted and is now part of the Suffering God's domain.

The Suffering Gods are pleased with him and turn him into a Suffering God. He did it all so he could bring back his childhood best friend that he betrayed and was killed as a result. He did it so he could see her again and spend one more day with her before she dies.

TL;DR: a man brings a literal apocalypse to the universe so he can see a loved one again for one day.

What do you think? Somebody who slaughters all life in the universe just so he could see a beloved one for only one day before she dies? Is it a bittersweet ending that makes people sympathize with him? I'm also considering the idea that perhaps my character will sacrifice himself to allow her to live but I'm not sure how to get it to work given the circumstances the universe is left in.

I would be less inclined to sympathize with him if he actually went through with it. If he got to a point and was all' "Oh crap, who have I become? Would she still love me knowing I'm ding all this?" and then sacrifices his wants for all life in the universe, I'd probably like the guy a bit more.

I second this. But if he's going to go through with it, I think it would all come down to execution. Does he feel bad even a little bit for destroying the world, or is he being selfish through-and-through?

Think God of War, Kratos literally destroyed the whole world just to get his revenge on Olympus. We still rooted for him anyway, despite the sick and brutal ways he killed his enemies. Despite the fact that he also killed innocents as well and did not care about anything but his revenge. Sure, Ares made him kill his own family but he had full control over it and he asked the Gods to make his nightmares go away and they even made him a God of War. He still wasn't happy and decided to destroy everything anyway.

Selfish characters still have a lot of potential in my opinion.

This takes place over a period of 61,000 years, he does a lot of unethical and morally fucked up things along the way. He just simply does not care about anybody else, the only person he ever cared about was the only person who was ever nice to him in his whole life. The story isn't completely about him but he's the reason why all of this is happening and he won't stop until he gets what he wants.

Video games are different than books and I honestly didn't like any of the God of War games I played. But I guess that's just our opinions, man.

Yeah, I guess it's just a matter of taste. Some people enjoy it, some don't. I actually enjoyed God of War, GOW 3 blew me away, dude, that game is easily one of my top five games of all time.
