    Title/Honorific for a religious authority?

Discussion in 'Research' started by Veltman, Oct 18, 2018.

The universe I created for my new novel contains a special caste of people born with "God's blood and eyes", who do not age and can see things normal people can't and sometimes carry out missions given by God. The organization they belong to will be the main religion of the universe. I am trying to create a title and honorific for the other characters to use when addressing them, but I can't decide. "His/Her Highness/Majesty" is too royal. They aren't royal. "His/Her Holiness" is too religious, they aren't PURELY religious beings, so it doesn't work.

    Any ideas?

How about lord and lady??? They can be addressed as my lord/lady and when talking about them you can say lord/lady [insert name here].

Father/mother, brother/sister are probably general enough but also religious enough.
    Master/Mistress maybe also.

The style of address should reflect something about their name and position. What are they referred to as? Are they seen more as "warriors of God", saints or political figures?
What kind of setting is this in? What cultural and historical setting does it most match?
It's hard to answer this question because I'm not sure what you're going for.
"Blessed Lord/Lady" comes to mind maybe.

Given they're basically demigods, or a superior race, perhaps "Higher One" or "Superior One" or something like that could be used as a generic title that isn't indicative of a rank but merely a higher class.

"Your Superiority", "Your Elevated Self", or other "custom" titles could be used too.

Nobody said you couldn't make your own as well. Just saying that is still an option. but it goes along with the caveat that you need to explain it. If you have your own language or even a simple replacement based language (come up with different words for a word in english). Then you can name them like Higher God Speaker

High Prophet. High Priest. High Seer

Or, alternatively these are some more different one:

God's Mouth. Godspeaker. Holy Mouth, Holy Eye.

The cultural and historical setting, aside from the fantasy elements, would be about early 1900s Europe, Edwardian era. They would be a mixture of warriors, philosophers and politicians.

I forgot to mention they are not all equal as well. There will be a hierarchy based on time lived, as the young and reckless ones might end up dying. (They don't age or die naturally but wont be immune to death). That means I need more than a single title and honorific. Any ideas on this?

I'm re-reading a satirical book about a new pope, and in it several titles the pope and cardinals hold are mentioned. For the pope:

    Patriarch of the West
    Sovereign of Vatican City
    Supreme Pontiff
    Father of Princes and Kings
    Governor of the Round Earth
    (Most) Holy Father

and the cardinals (mentioned in Italian):

    Illustrissimus
    Eminentissimus
    Reverendissimus

    Something to chew on, perhaps.
