The book I'm writing requires good illustrations in order to fit with the theme. It's depressing that I have two choices: either use my life savings to afford one piece of artwork and go homeless or just leave my pages as plain walls of text that look boring and not engage readers. Game or movie companies have tons of money so they can hire tons of good artists to draw stuff for them to make their lore/stories interesting. Or authors with publishers can just afford any sort of art they like, they don't have to ever worry about illustrations because they'll be able to pay $3000 for some nice book cover or page illustration. Oh well, just wanted to get it off my chest.
You could also try some stock photo companies. You'd have to take what they have, but generally the selection it pretty huge and the prices are somewhat more economical. There's also the option of using public domain illustrations. Also a take what they have proposition, but, for the most part, free.
That's what I'm doing right now, I'm using artwork I find on the internet that fits the description closely even though it's not really what I had in mind. By the way, I'll add a link here to show you what I'm working on, does this link work for you? http://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/r1bQCwhXqX
Basically a mug-shot database program type thing that puts features together into a sketch. The crime show, or CIA kind of stuff. Something for us mere mortals.
I'll check it out, but did the link I sent you work? It doesn't seem to work for me so I'm wondering if it works for anyone else.
You could hire freelancers to design some pages for you. It's usually really cheap and you can find some really good artists just trying to make some money off their hobbies. I suggest the website Fiverr for finding freelancers.
