It's like Cockygate all over again, but this time with famous authors! https://guardian.ng/life/tomi-adeyemi-apologises-to-nora-roberts/ Nora's blog post about the incident (classier than I could ever be if accused of the same) http://fallintothestory.com/mob-rule-by-social-media/ Leaving aside the fact that Robert's book title Of Blood and Bone was announced in January, while Adeyemi's debut novel Children of Blood and Bone came out in March, the hubris of thinking that Nora Roberts - who could publish her grocery list and it would be an automatic NYT Bestseller - is trying to steal your sales is nothing short of madness. And let's not even talk about how many books currently have "Blood" and "Bone" in their titles: https://www.goodreads.com/search?q=blood+bone If you are lucky enough to get a book deal, and even luckier enough to have your debut novel become a success, please don't do this shit on social media. I'm not saying anyone should roll over in the face of a famous author, but if you feel like you've been plagiarized please consult your damn publisher for some due diligence before flying off the handle publicly.
Interesting. However I don't rip off my titles from Heavy Metal Album tracks for a book Title. Through Blood, Dirt, And Bone- Trivium being the most obvious choice to be ripped off by either author comes to mind. And let's be realistic, I will never be published by a real publisher, or ever be relevant enough to have this happen to me. So You can bet on the fact that I won't be raising a SM storm over some petty BS like this.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone (unrelated to the OP) is one of my favorite YA trilogies. There are a gazillion similar titles including the one in question in the OP story. Nora Roberts has the funds to fight the lawsuit. I wonder who is funding Tomi Adeyemi given it is such a weak claim? Perhaps this was a ploy to get name recognition? Sounds like no lawsuit ever ensued.
This all happened over the last two days. I don't feel like she'll sue but I'd cheer her on if she did. ETA: Sorry, I misread this last night. You were talking about Tomi suing Nora, which you are correct never happened. She just made outrageous claims of IP theft on Twitter, possibly damaging Nora's basically sterling reputation. When I said I'd cheer, I meant I would cheer Nora if she wanted to sue Tomi for libel. Also, I just found out that Nora Roberts fought like hell to sue Janet Dailey, another hugely popular Romance writer, for plagiarism after she lifted parts of Roberts's books and put them into her own. https://www.newsweek.com/queen-hearts-gives-her-throne-172376 Nora Roberts is the last author who would steal someone else's intellectual property.
Right??? I think she has enough issues trying not to duplicate the 200 other titles in her backlog without trying to do the same with anyone else's!
Ridiculous. I just breezed through Nora's extensive bibliography and most of her titles are just cliches, or a take on a cliche, or something thoroughly unimaginative. It appears that Nora Roberts has cornered the market on book titles guaranteed to attract house frumps and gay teenage boys.
Actually, I don't think you can copyright a book title. Look on Amazon at books and you'll soon discover there are many with the same titles by different authors.
The question does arise ...I wonder if Tomi thought that by creating a shitstorm she'd draw attention to her book?
You can't copyright a book title, but you can trademark it. No idea what process you need to go through to trademark something, but you have to show that it's pretty damn distinctive. How Paris Hilton managed to trademark "That's hot" is beyond me....
