The issue I see with this is that it can very quickly make a forum look cluttered. Text signatures are typically small and discrete. They don't distract from the actual content of the forum, which is the most important part. With image signatures, you will either get a lot of distracting or attention-grabbing images, or you need to have very strict rules about what is and isn't permitted. One option detracts from the forum experience, and the other means a much larger moderation effort to make sure signatures are in line.
The first thing I do when I join a new forum is turn off signatures, and the size of that image is the main reason why.
@Earp @Komposten In any forum I've ever been on, they have size limitations which reduces distraction and clutter. And the same rules that apply to profile pictures are simply expanded to signatures. The actual size of the signature picture would be about 1/12th of what I posted. inb4 "That's still too big." Another writing forum I'm on makes it a reward for donating a certain amount to keep the site running. So not everybody has one. And not everybody who donates decides to use one.
It is true that the forum software can be set to auto-size any image to a preset limit, but I can tell you now that Daniel is firmly against the idea of "billboard sigs". In the past when you have seen me make use of images in my signature, they had to strictly be for internal forum use (contest announcements and I used to have a little bookshelfie look'n deal that were individual links to other destinations within the forum), but even as an admin, the images function is turned off for me as well. Those images were, in fact, repurposed custom emoticons I made, which the software treats as a different creature to other sorts of links and images.
Oh okay, I understand then. It's a personal preference and I can respect the desire to keep things more clean.
Nah, not a really a reveal. Said custom emoticons have to be uploaded into the forum software to work as such and only the admins have that access. Linking emoticons from elsewhere won't work.
