My huge novel is under self publishing processes

Discussion in 'Self-Publishing' started by The Writer Dude, Jun 7, 2018.

Hi. Allow me to introduce myself. I'm doing self publish in a contract I've made with BookFuel publishing house. However, I wish to use this forum to start posting the chapters of my novel for free and day by day. I just want ask if this does go against the rules of this forum or not. And since my novel is science fiction, I wish to know which section in this forum to post it.

Is it too late to get out of your contract?

In any case, yes, I'm just about positive that it's against the rules of the forum.

It's been 7 months now since signing in that contract. But what makes me positive about it is that I received very good feedback from readers who have no personal interaction with me. These readers are not related to the company either. I might as well find another forum that allows me to post the chapters since I can't find any easier way to advertise it.

Well it'd be easy enough to begin a diary thread and post your chapters. I think a Wordpress account would be more suitable as your 'shop front.' Use this forum like a saloon or a hairdressers with the guys, y'know, all discussing our great achievements. Many of us are well-known writer-celebrities and when you say yours is huge, well mine is very fat, so choose your weapon..

I would be less worried about the forum rules, and more worried that you'd be in breach of your publishing contract. If you've signed a contract to publish through a publisher, then they probably won't be too happy about you posting the material online for people to access at no cost.

Do you mean you contracted this Bookfuel company to get your book ready to be self-published? I don't understand what you mean by 'contract.'

If they are traditional publishers (who pay YOU—not the other way around—and will be promoting your book for you) and you have a contract with them, they will definitely not want you putting the chapters out someplace else for free.

However, if you are paying them to set and print your book for you as a print-on-demand option, and they have no interest in the content of your book, you can publish the chapters online as well, with no comeback from them.

However, I agree with @matwoolf and @ChickenFreak. This would probably not be allowed on the forum, and would be better done in a general blog on WordPress, or someplace like that. If you have any doubts, contact one of the Mods and ask.

Even if it is allowed, the forum is a relatively closed group of people. You will, I presume, want as wide a readership as you can get. So you'll want to cast your net wider than just this forum, won't you?

Sorry for my late respond for having a busy day. To answer your question, the contract is self publish, which is based on my own payment. So yes, all the copy rights belong to me. However, I wish to know more about this General blog on wordPress?

Well, that doesn’t assure that copyrights belong to you—you should read the contract.

I've read it more than once. It also makes it clear that the book's sales are 100% percent for me. Some self publish companies have some interests in the book's sales. But this one is different. Part of that is because I had to pay a lot for their editing, designing, printing, and everything else they do for me.

Book fuel is a service company for self publishers, they aren't a publishing house - its not quite vanity publishing because they are open about what they do, but its a good way to spend a lot of cash on things you could easily do yourself, or get done on a percentage by services like d2d. However since they aren't publishing the book they don't have the copyright so there are no problems there.

However it is not what our forum is for (the workshops are for wip not finished manuscripts), and would definitely be against WF rules ... you'd be better off using a blog , or something like wattpad.

Also a consideration is why publish chapter by chapter rather than just publishing the book - you aren't going to get more paid readers that way ( If you wanted to make it a pay model you could use patreon, but I'd tend to suggest that its not really viable for an unknown)

Incidentally your sales will be via amazon. kobo etc and your royalty will be about 70% (or as low as 35% depending on your price structure)

Once its published you can if you wish pay to advertise it with facebook and ams ... you can also push it on social media etc... putting it on a writers forum will never be an effective advert unless your book is a non fiction book aimed at writers

Wattpad is probably the most well-known display site, though beware it doesn't translate to self-publishing sales.

I find this discussion very interesting, but for me, the hands on of formating a manuscript is at the forefront. So, here goes - my 'Kindle Add-in' app is set on Font size 8 (the template fitting their requirements). All the publishers I've dealt with use Size 12 font... and I wonder if the Kindle font size (8) is right for both book form and e-readers - any ideas?

Hi @XX10 - you seem to have asked the same question twice which makes me wonder whether you have genuinely never seen a kindle?

If you are self publishing Vellum is very handy for formatting (its quite expensive but worth it in the long run) - that aside you don't lock font or font size for an ereader so that the reader can change it to their preference on their device.

For print formatting I'd use 12 point in the PDF unless I was producing a large print edition in which case 14pt or 15pt. I certainly wouldn't use 8pt for anything other than foot notes as that is tiny in most fonts

Why would you want to put chapters here in this forum for free, when the whole idea is to sell your book for real money, especially having forked out with BookFuel already?
Doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever.

Have you got a problem with that?

Regardless of the age of the thread, the subject is still interesting and if I had a publishing contract, there's no way I would publish chapters in this forum, or any other for that matter.
It would also be interesting to hear from the OP as to how they got on with BookFuel, which appears to be a kind of vanity press, similar to what I used about ten years ago.

I think it's easy to forget that newer members see threads like these and feel they have something to contribute, without realizing the thread has been, to all intents and purposes, abandoned; to be honest I've been the same place myself.

You are right - I apologise - I found it irritating, but its me I'm irritated at the world at the minute.

On point you are right it would be a cold day in hell before I published chapters in that manner unless it was a conscious awareness building thing like Andy weir did with the blog that preceded the Martian.

In regard of book fuel they aren't quite a vanity, but its certainly a good way to spend way more than you need to - if someone wants to self publish the only services they really need to pay for are editing/proofreading and a decent book cover plus advertising on AA or FB to push their sales

No problem, get a little stir crazy my own self every now and then.
Talking about Andy Weir, didn't Hugh Howey do something similar, publish in chapters or segments, the whole novel in little pieces? I'm reading his first novel, Wool, now, is what me think of it (really good too).

I will freely admit to having paid around £1000 to have my book published by Authors Online, back in 2007. I even paid for a critique, but made the fatal mistake of not having it edited and now I physically cringe when I look back on that episode.
In fact, I may well have it edited properly and re-launch it through KDP once I've got my current project put to bed.

    PS
    No problems, moose.

£1k was cheap for a vanity - I know a woman who's been ripped off... I mean um.. paid for valuable services .. [/sarcasm] with Dorrance to the tune of nearly 8 grand

Oh no, are you kidding, 8g?
I looked at vanity publishing when I was young enough to have no idea what I was doing, I was tempted, lucky enough it was too much money and I couldn't afford it. As with others, I read that effort and cringe. It's so easy to look at that when you don't know enough about the business and get taken in.
