Where is the horror thread, or do we horror writers have to create our own? [content redacted] - Wreybies
We only have genre-specific sub-forums for genre's where the interest in such discussions is very high, like e.g. fantasy. We'll definitely consider adding a specific forum for horror if there are enough proponents for it. In the meantime, the best option is to use the By the Genre forum and put the Horror label on all horror-related threads (much like you did with this thread).
As @Komposten says above, you need to start posting questions and threads with the Horror label on them. If you create a critical mass, a subforum will appear.
One of the ETB related projects I'm working on currently is to go through and tag all the threads in the general 'by the genre' board as well as moving all the fantasy, scifi, erotica, and non fiction into its sub boards... there was a lot of stuff moved out of GW to BTG which wasn't tagged... hopefully that will make it easier for Daniel to see whats needed (and also make life a lot easier when it comes to moving stuff into new sub boards) The same applies to the by writing form board - where it is evident that we need a sub board for songs/lyrics
Maybe this isn't hugely relevant, but I feel like horror is a shrinking genre. People just don't tend to write it anymore. I went into two bookshops today and found that, in the first, horror had been lumped in with sci-fi and fantasy, and while there were huge amounts of these horror only took up about 20% of the shelf. In the second, horror had its own shelf, but it was a single bay compared to three or four for sci-fi and fantasy, and god knows how many for crime. What is on the horror shelves isn't new - it's all Stephen King, Dean Koontz, James Herbert. The well-known authors. At risk of sounding particularly sad, I keep fairly up to date with new releases, and I counted 4 since November last year. Granted, this is two bookshops in a city in England, so maybe the market just isn't as big. But it certainly feels like horror is sinking into the background. Maybe because it's all on Netflix. On a more related note, I'd love to see a horror forum on here and I'll be tagging my posts from now on.
I am horrified there is no horror, thriller, romance. The only fiction people are posting about seems to be fantasy and science fiction. I'd love to see some espionage, war, crime. Is no one writing about such stuff anymore?
Another one who would participate in a horror forum! It's been a shrinking market for a long time - at least a decade - and I don't know why, either. Major publishers just don't buy it anymore unless it has strong fantasy elements and can be marketed as dark fantasy or whatever they're calling it now. This would make a good thread... This site has a disproportionate number of fantasy writers for unknown reasons. I don't bother posting about my genre (romance) because there are only two other active romance authors on the board, to my knowledge. It probably does harm the forum in that non-fantasy writers look around and don't bother signing up, so maybe we need advertising campaigns to attract more diverse authors... @Daniel
Funny, because I see the romance writers here as the core of the traditionally published group. When they talk, I listen. Not going to try and list people (because it will show my ignorance of my fellow forumites' accomplishments), but Romance seems to be the dominant genre in terms of hard-copy success around this joint.
There are only two romance authors with print deals on the site, as far as I know. I believe the only other print author around is TWErwin who writes fantasy (?). But I probably just showed my ignorance, too!
It's late at night here, and I'm into the booze, so I'm going to refrain from trying to remember who does what at the moment.
When you are into the booze early in the day is when you need to worry. Late night is made for a few glasses of wine followed by a nice whisky or three. Enjoy enjoy
theres loads of people writing all of the above, but they simply either aren't posting in by the genre, or if they are they aren't tagging their threads with a genre title... admin will add any sub board that is needed but people need to actual demonstrate that need with content threads not simply saying they want it Sci Fi and Fantasy both have a lot of very specific discussions that aren't applicable anywhere else... crime, thriller, romance etc not so much ( a lot of the threads in plot/character development relate to those areas) - I've written 6 thrillers but I don't see a lot of need for a thriller genre board
