    Hybrid

    Story

After the Great Inter-System War, the Federation has established itself as the central governing body of two-thirds of the explored Milky Way galaxy. Hybrids, the weapons created for the war, were outlawed, and their destruction was ordered from the highest levels of the Federation.

The Federation does not control everything, however, and the portion of the galaxy the Federation does not control is an untamed section of space filled with everything the Federation is there to defend against, or so the Federation claims.

Our story begins in a space station floating just beyond the outer reaches of the Federation, a production facility of Hybrids, and follows one Hybrid’s quest to survive and save her kind from destruction.

    What is a Hybrid?

Hybrids are biological weapons created when humans first began to run into alien life forms in their travels across the cosmos. They are created by taking human gamete cells and splicing them with the DNA of other creatures. The result is a creature that is usually humanoid in form, with certain anatomical differences from humans, which is determined by the code spliced into their DNA, as well as having human intelligence and animal instincts.

For example, a crocodilian hybrid may have hard scales over bony plates down their back, webbed claws for hands, the tail, or any combination of the traits of a crocodilian, such as the bite or the ability to effectively turn off their lungs for hours at a time, and the traits of a human, like an upright posture, opposable thumbs, and higher intelligence.

Often, hybrids exhibit certain personality traits and/or behaviors related to their animal half, alongside a violent disposition characteristic of their existence as living weapons. The aforementioned crocodilian hybrid may favor surprise tactics, or he may prefer a wet, humid swamp planetside to the dry, air conditioned halls of a human station. He may also have the characteristic hiss crocodilians display whenever he is upset by something or giving a warning.

Hybrids are incapable of reproducing. They were created as living weapons, and are widely viewed as “less than human”, and are not required to be paid for work they do, and many shops refuse service to them. They are also viewed as unnatural, evil beings by many religions, as they are an artificial species, not beings created by God.

Hybrids were outlawed by the Federation after the Great Inter-System War. Anyone suspected of creating hybrids faces extreme prejudice and scrutiny, and if they are proven to have anything to do with the creation of a hybrid, from actually manipulating the genes and developing the embryo to have been the clerk who sold rung up the creator’s groceries, faces social suicide, incarceration, and possibly a death sentence, and any hybrids found are to be destroyed “humanely”. These laws are only enforced in Federation territory, although the Federation makes routine searches for hybrid production facilities to destroy them.

Hybrids, being designed as biological weapons, are usually brainwashed and mentally programmed for combat, and are typically loyal to their owners. There are some exceptions to this, however the main body of hybrids that do exist outside of the Federation are almost always soldiers, working for whoever purchased them from the manufacturer.

    The Technology

For the large part, the ounds of technology in this universe are not defined. As long as it is possible in reality if we had the tech to do it, it will be fine here.

Most ships come with the Warp Drive, which is a device that coordinates with all other Warp Drives in the system to place a ship into a sub-timestream relative to the normal flow of time, this is called time dilation. If you need a week to get somewhere, but you only have a day, punch that into your drive and the computer will calculate all other Warp exits at the coordinates of your destination, and open a wormhole into the appropriate timestream to drop you at back in real time as close to your destination as possible.

Cybernetics exist. A being with mechanical parts or modifications is possible, but is important to remember that these are very expensive and painful for the person receiving the mods. A full body graft will likely be such a strain on the graftee that they might die on the operating table.

Robots are illegal in Federation space, however outside the Federation, Federation laws don’t apply.

    What is the Federation?

The Federation is the main governing body for two thirds of the galaxy. After the destruction of the Solar System due to the death of the Helios star, humans began to explore from their various outposts. In their travels, they encountered a few other alien species. Relations with the aliens were tentative, until a dispute between humans and aliens arose that started the Inter-System War, essentially a genocide campaign by each stargoing race against each of the other stargoing races. This did not end well for many aliens, and the galaxy is still picking up the pieces. Out of the chaos rose the Federation. Run largely by humans and with mostly xenophobic politicians at the helm, the Federation has forced many alien races who will not join the Federation to live in squalor, or else in the one third of the galaxy that the Federation does not control.

The Federation enforces strict laws on its citizens. Hybrids are not allowed to exist or be created, Extra-Terrestrial species are not permitted to hold office, Robots cannot be used for combat purposes, to name a few. Those who violate the Federation’s laws, whether you are Federation or not, face prison or execution, depending on which law you broke,

    Who are the aliens?

The alien races of the galaxy live on the outskirts of civilization. Making up less than a quarter of the population in Federation territory after the Great Inter-System War, they populate the desolate areas of human civilization, forced to live where the humans do not want to. Human supremacists and religious zealots claim aliens to be the scum of the universe, and refuse to give aliens any more rights than the Nazis gave Jews during the Holocaust.

Even in the one third of the galaxy where aliens are not suppressed by the Federation, they are not fully trusted, either.

What is th Great Inter-System War?

The Great Inter-System War, or ISW, as it is often called, was a large scale space war taking place shortly after humans began to explore the galaxy following the destruction of Earth and a large portion of the Solar System after their star, Helios, died.

When humans first began to encounter alien life, realantionships between humans and extra-terrestrials were on high tension, for sure. Neither had really encountered one another before then.

And then the first fights happened. No one really knows the cause, but at some point, something happened to an alien diplomat that caused him to destroy the station he was house at, killing dozens on both sides.

The humans retaliated by attempting the arrest of the diplomat, only to end up destroying his ship and everyone in it when he would not submit. So began the war.

The galaxy is still picking up the pieces after the war, and tensions between humans and aliens are still high.

    The Rules

    1. All of the basic forum rules apply.

    2. There will be no power-play of any kind.

    3. Be respectful to your fellow RPers. We’re all here to have fun and tell a story.

    4. Mild profanity is allowed, but do not allow it to escalate to the point of the F or N words. Certain species in this universe are thought of on this level, however racial slurs intended to hurt other RPers or are in any Earth language will not be tolerated. Example: White man to black man: “Get out of my way, N*****!”, absolutely not. Instant boot, and anything you say will be ignored.

    5. All character profiles must be PMed to the GM (DarkPen14) for approval. You cannot join the RPG with a character that has not been approved.

    6. The GM’s decisions are final. If the GM says that something is not allowed because of whatever reason, than you must respect the decision. I will try to be fair and logical.

    7. Keep the scenery to… teen levels. We all love our characters, we love action scenes, and maybe we’re evil enough to want to see bits and pieces of the bad guy go flying everywhere, but that’s not okay. The same goes for intimate scenes between characters. When the clothes start coming off or you start to get touchy feely with the fun parts, it’s time to drop off from there and keep it to the inside of your head.

    8. Do not make the GM be that guy who polices everything down to the version of their/there/they’re in your writing. Nobody likes that guy and it makes the RP do a backflip off a cliff onto the jagged rocks below. If you break the rules, you need to apologize to your other members of the RP and take a mark on your record. At three marks, you are no longer allowed to participate in this RP.

    9. If you absolutely have to speak out of character here, do it in ((This fashion)). The double parenthesis will let us know that this is you speaking and not a side note of the post.

    10. Always post at lease a paragraph. We need thoughts, feelings, actions. “Gary passed the butter.”, doesn’t give anyone anything to go off of.

    11. Don’t be a jerk. We’re all here to have fun.

    12. I’m actually writing a novel set in this universe. I may ask you for permission to use your character concepts in the story at any time.

    13. Only three Hybrid characters will be allowed aside from the central character, GA-X19847-HC, or Canine.

    14. Character relationships are okay, but it is not allowed to deviate the plot from it’s original course. For example, a sub-arc in the story about John Doe and Jane Buck admitting their feelings for each other under some bizarre circumstance is okay, as long as it will help drive the plot forward.

    15. Each member of the RPG must be regularly and reliably active. Even if you can only get in one or two posts a day, that is better than six hours one day and then nothing for a week. Different time zones do pose a problem, I personally am on most weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, but maybe you are in a different time zone or cannot be active during the same hours. Let the GM know if you will not be active for a while so that they can plan around that.

    16. Do not back-to-back post. Give your other RPers a chance to respond before you post again. If a full 24 hour day goes by and no one has posted after you, than you are free to post again. Otherwise, allow at least two people to post before you post again.

    17. Don’t just piggy-back and try to befriend every character. Remember, certain species are hated, certain groups of people are distrusted, and it’s extremely lazy of you to just be the nice guy who makes friends with everyone he meets rather than let the relationships between characters develop on their own. For example: The central character is a hybrid girl. That means that the Federation wants her dead, and the bounty hunters who attack the station are there to kill her and any other hybrids there. Maybe one of the bounty hunters notices that she is not actively fighting and questions his orders, but the entire party is not by any means about to just go “Okay, she’s the MC, we gotta ride with her. Let’s be friends!” Characters are people with real thoughts and feelings. Let things develop how they will.

    Character Template

This is the template you must fill out and PM to the GM for review. You may not post in the RP before your character is approved. Below the template you will find a list of characters we need. Outside of that list, you have total free-roam within the bounds of this universe. If you have a more detailed template you would like to use, that is fine, as long as it covers all the bases in the provided template.

    Name:

    Race:

    Age:

Gender: (If applicable. Some aliens may not have genders as humans know them.)

Appearance: (Be descriptive. Scars, tattoos, physique, jewelry, etc.)

Personality Traits: (How does the character act? Why do they do so? What scares them? What enrages them? How do they see the world around them?)

    Profession: (Job/Career that they do.)

Bio: (Optional. Your character’s past isn’t necessary, but there is no such thing as too much information as far as the character details.)

Tools/Weapons: (If applicable. Maybe your bounty hunter has a really big gun, or your thief has a doohickey to hack digital locks.)

    Other:

    We need a:
    Federation Leader
    2-5 Bounty Hunters
    2-3 Hybrid Creation Scientists
PM me for more details about specific aspects that would be desirable or character concepts you think would help drive the story forward.

    Other Notes:
We are here to tell a story, and I understand if you do not feel that you can work with this environment. I am here to help, and you should never be afraid to ask questions.

Sounds cool, I'll start drawing up a character! I am a little worried about the pace though. Apart from the timezone thing (I'm in CET), one post a day can be difficult with a fulltime job, wife and 8-month old son and rather rusty writing skills.

As for the out of character talk, in case you didn't find it yet, you can set up a separate Discussion thread where the RPers can talk OoC and discuss the game.
    You can make it here:
    https://www.writingforums.org/role-play-discussion/

Last but not least: 'there is no such thing as too much information' <--- You're going to regret you said that :p

I realize there is an actual OOC method, but sometimes it would be more time-consuming and difficult to go find the topic and post two or three words of a sentence when you can just go ((two or three words of a sentence)). It's a last resort deal.

This would not be the first time I've regretted saying no such thing as TMI.

Quick question, is there a time-frame you were thinking to start this thing by? Mine is going to take a little time since it's kind of a group rather than a person. And I'm also getting slammed by work right now, and college. It may take me another week. Not bailing, just a little slow at the moment.

No set start date, I'm still trying to figure out whether my boss is gonna push this one through as a new imprint at the publishing company I work at. If they do, then this'll have to be cancelled because I'll be in breach of contract. I'm sorry if this is jerking chains around, I've just got a lot going on right now.

Well that sounds a bit on the fence. I'll just hold off until you've got that figured out.

Yeah, Hybrid's going through. Sorry. Hopefully the activity can help bring life back, though.
Nvm, job turned out to be a scam.

Hi, my name's Jensen, and I like to roleplay often on other sites but this is my first time here. The rules seem to be quite a bit different, so I apologize if I mess something up. Anyway, here's the idea I had.

    Detached

A group of diverse people form a close friendship in a hellish mental hospital, but none of them are mentally ill. They've all been wrongfully diagnosed by different psychiatrists. There are 5 people. The illnesses they've been diagnosed with are schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and autism.
The characters all come together to try to figure out why they've been given a diagnosis that doesn't at all fit them, and figure out how to escape.

    Rules

    1. Basic forum and roleplaying rules

    2. Drama between characters is accepted and encouraged. It keeps things interesting and realistic, so you can let your characters do whatever they want as long as it's in character.

    3. Drama between users is not acceptable. Any arguments or fighting between users is absolutely not tolerated.

    4. No controlling the actions of a character that is not yours. That takes away other user's freedom of their writing, and that's not cool.

    5. Side comments must be in parentheses and on a separate line than your roleplay reply. For example...
He let out breath of relief as the woman exited the room. Now was his chance.

(just a heads up, I won't be as active for the next few days)

    6. Your replies have to be at least five sentences, preferably more than that. One-liners kill roleplays quickly.

    7. Romantic and sexual relationships are okay in the roleplay as long as they don't take over the plot.

    8. LGBT+ characters and romances are accepted and encouraged.

    9. If two characters are in a sexual situation, it must be either skipped or taken to PMs once clothes come off/hands start wandering. That kind of stuff isn't what I'd like to focus on, I'm not trying to write or read erotica here.

    10. If there's a problem, ask me. What I decide is final.

    11. One character per person. Too many characters can complicate things.

    12. Must be fairly active. If you're inactive for a couple of days or more, I'm going to assume that you've dropped out of the RP and leave you behind.

    13. Character template must be as descriptive as possible.

    Character Template

    Name:
    Age:
    Gender and pronouns:
    Sexuality:
    Appearance:
    Personality:
    Hobbies:
    Backstory:
    Other:
Mental Illness (ask for the one you'd like, first):

Fill this out and PM it to me for approval.

Yeah, not really. I hadn't even really gotten too involved yet. But that means Hybrid has a metaphorical green light to get the ball rolling

The way you get approval is you post the thread in the RP forum, and wait for a mod to come in and say "Approved"

Sooo, I guess this is just a pulse check to see if anyone is around? I was conceptualizing a sorta freeform roleplay idea and started jotting down the general outline, but didn't wanna post it for approval if this place was deserted lol.

The idea was of a multi-species fantasy land recently entering an industrial age, with new technology like gas-powered vehicles and electric lights and telephones and automatic weapons being introduced into an archaic society that was previously mostly dependant on sorcery and the whims of mysterious nature gods. The emergence of this technology has created a growing schism with some people choosing sides: the "Traditionals", those who prefer the old ways and sorcery, versus the "Newthinkers", those who prefer technology and support expanding it.

Of course there are those who don't adhere to these extremes, not Traditional or Newthinker, and fall somewhere on the middle, still liking magic but also appreciating the advancements of technology and the benefits they bring. These people are called "Moderates". The roleplay story begins with our characters boarding a luxury steam train to the capital city for the upcoming Royal Election, stopping at various locations along the way and interacting with each other, discussing their positions on the matter and the state of their rapidly evolving country. Players can be great sorcerers, or honest workers, or law enforcement, or even rogue criminals, whatsoever they choose.

There will be conflicts at the train stops along the way, engineered by me, the GM, but it is completely up to the players how they react or if they choose not to react at all and focus on sightseeing and getting to their destination. This Royal Election is the most charged in the history of the land and the outcome could decide the destiny of the Good Country....for the Good of All or, quite possibly, the End of All.

    The Choice is Yours.

    How's that for a teaser?
