This looks like a film my dad would`ve loved if he were still around. Might go see it when it comes out just for that.

Watched this yesterday and it almost had me tear up. Is it just me? I've enjoyed it though.

Also, started watching a new anime! :D (After ages). So far I've watched the first 3 episodes. It's satirical and has this wtf factor that amuses me. Fun to watch, although sometimes it gets too deep into technical details (how powers work, or how to level up, just like a video game) which tires me, but so far, so good. As long as it makes me laugh.

Just watched the new movie "Alita: Battle Angel". I didn't think it was going to be good, but I was pleasantly surprised. The movie was great. The animation was beautiful, the story was extremely intriguing, and the acting was exceptional. 10/10 recommend!

I watched Captain Marvel; reviews indicate that it's generic superhero fare; I was left wondering whether I had gone to see the same movie! I thought the plot was very non-standard: I was surprised by the plot direction in a good way, with one or two twists that I didn't see coming. And the alien Skrulls who can pose as any human always means that you can never know who to trust, it's like watching a new series of 24, lol! Always an element that adds some extra fun. It's a 9/10 from me - miles better than Aquaman anyway.

I also saw Cold Pursuit too which was decent enough, quite a bit of black humour in it. Liam Neeson out for revenge as usual, nothing new there, and that's actually the dull bit. Thankfully, the movie spends most of its energy focusing on a turf war between two drug lords that Neeson accidentally initiates, and that was quite interesting and funny at times - I'd give it a 7/10.

My big takeaway after Captain Marvel was that the MCU still has yet to really crack the character. That's the piece MCU movies usually get right: watch Iron Man, Captain America, Ant-Man or Dr. Strange and within the first couple scenes you get a pretty good sense of who these guys are and what makes them tick. Tony Stark and Steven Strange are arrogant hotshots, Steve Rogers is an idealist, Scott Lang is a guy with a checkered past who wants to go straight and do right by his daughter. I had fun watching CM but when it was over I still didn't have a great sense of what Carol Danvers is really like as a person. I guess the defense is that even she didn't know that, and the movie is the story of her finding out. But whatever traits are supposed to be at the beginning and end of that character arc, for me, just didn't come across on screen. Sometimes she reads as clinical and alien, like a Kree; other times she's a perfectly normal earth-girl, laughing and quipping with Nick Fury. And nothing in the film explains these shifts, which neither she nor any other character seems to notice, so the performance just feels inconsistent. I've loved Brie Larson in other films so I hold out hope that with better directing and writing she'll really nail it in future installments. Interested to see what the Russos do with her.

Watch this scene at 53:28 (it's one of the reason's this ultimately bad movie is my all time favorite, despite it's many flaws)

Eloise: So, why do you like me so much anyway?

    Tom Tom: I don't know.

Eloise: Tom Tom, you know... you can't always say 'yes' or 'no' or 'I don't know'... you know... There must be a reason. And it would be nice to know what it is. So why don't you think about it and I'll wait.

Tom Tom: Love can never be portrayed the same way as a tree or the sea, or any other mystery. It's the eyes, with which we see. It's the sinner in the saint. It's the light inside the paint.

I haven't thought of that movie for ages. It came out a short while before I moved, when I was in my art film phase. Never got around to watching it, I'll have to take a look. I remember watching Wings of Desire one night with my cat and drinking myself sick on tall glasses of white rum on ice, with lime.

The cat wasn't upset, he'd learned that these things tended to happen at that hour in front of the TV.

I watched The Mortal Engines, which apparently was the biggest box office bomb of 2018. It was visually imaginative with a sense of size and scale that was clearly on loan from Peter Jackson, and it had a pretty cool opening action scene. Then it had 100 minutes of forgettable stock characters reminiscent of low-rent hunger games knockoffs like maze runner or the divergent series but with less sex appeal. Then another darker, more confusing action scene, then credits. I must have missed the part where they explained why exactly the people of this post-apocalyptic future decided that building cities on wheels and racing them around Europe was a necessary and sensible thing to do. The plot involves a villain who previously killed the parent of one of the heroes, and guess what else, he is building a terrible weapon, and furthermore the only way to stop the weapon is through the use of an extremely rare macguffin which our heroes must seek out, and if it sounds like none of this requires cities to be slamming into each other like monster trucks that is because it does not but they sure look cool! In summation this is a bad movie that deserved to fail but it's passable CG eye candy porn and I enjoyed it on that level because I'm a bit of an idiot.

I've heard that before. I remember reading several reviews for Pet Sematary on Goodreads where people mentioned it was the only King book that was too creepy to finish. I've never read it, but I want to.

I watched Vice, the semi-biopic on former VP Dick Cheney* today.

What I will say here is that the casting and makeup is, for the most part, superb. It was very, very hard to see Christian Bale through his character, and Steve Carrell's Rumsfeld was quite good as well. Bale is as good or better than Anthony Hopkins as Hitchcock and Gary Oldman as Churchill.

As for the rest, it's the same sort of political semi-comedy as seen in American Hustle. There's a claim at the start that it's a true story, followed by a disclaimer that it was hard to get accurate information on Mr. Cheney, and some scenes are clearly (and gleefully) surrealist.

However, if your view of this film isn't strongly affected by your political worldview, you probably don't know enough recent history for it to be worth watching. And I say that no matter what your politics are, if you aren't aware of the controversy surrounding the Bush/Cheney administration and the US-led invasion of Iraq, the movie isn't going to make much sense. As for an in-depth discussion of the (de)merits, I'll leave that for the Debate Room if anyone chooses to take it up.

*useless fact: by surname, I am distantly related to Mr. Cheney through some part of Scottish clan ancestry. Not on the Christmas card list though.

This so-called "new" Star Wars trilogy is sinking to new lows... If you've seen the end of the new trailer that's just dropped, you'll know what I mean...

I had been both intrigued and excited on the announcement of The Force Awakens on what the galaxy would look like in the power vacuum resulting from the collapse of the Empire, and what would happen to the Resistance, and where things would go next. Only to find there is a new Empire, a new Darth Vader, a new Death Star, the Resistance still fighting.

It's just an utter disgrace to the whole franchise to turn around and say that everything that happened in the original trilogy was for nothing.

I'm watching a new Netflix movie right now called "The Silence". Ancient bats released from a Pennsylvania cave are killing people if they make any noise. There are crying babies and barking dogs and well...

Pretty intense. High quality for a Netflix movie.

There was a thread a while ago about plot holes and this has plenty, but I'm still enjoying it.

Here's a little gem I think is worth your time. It's a charming drama with a nice emotional core, some good humour and excellent performances. It helps I'm a big fan of both Juno and Milla (if you couldn't already tell from previous posts and my avatar).

    Dirty Girl

    (trailer starts at 27 secs.)

I just watched the movie 'Serenity' on Netflix. It has been absolutely panned by critics, but I rather enjoyed it. (Despite the HUGE plot hole that pretty much undermines the entire thing)

I almost walked out on that movie. I've only walked out of one movie ever (Resident Evil: Retribution, after 15 minutes - despite Milla), and I've seen a lot, but this one came close and I had to force myself to stay. I'm still not sure if it was worth it.

    Avengers: Endgame.

Once again it's impossible to discuss this in any detail without spoiling it, so I won't. Even if you think you know what's going to happen, how it happens will probably surprise you. It surprised me. If you're at all interested in the MCU get yourself to a theater ASAP to avoid spoilers.

Anyway, I definitely have my nitpicks, but the bottom line is that Marvel pulled it off. We probably won't see another grand cinematic project on this scale come off this successfully in our lifetimes.

EDIT: Okay, just one more thing: this movie really assumes its audience is well-versed in the 21 films that came before. If you've only seen Infinity War and are thinking you can basically follow this film, think again. And the movies that turn out to be most important aren't always the ones you expect. Inside the following spoiler tag are not exactly spoilers, but rather a list of movies whose storylines feed most directly into this one in my opinion.

    Iron Man 1
    Captain America: The First Avenger
    Avengers 1
    Thor: The Dark World
    Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 1
    Doctor Strange
Avengers: Infinity War (I mean, obviously, but would be wrong not to list it)
    Ant Man and the Wasp

    ...and I'm probably forgetting one.

I enjoyed the movie, but I felt some of its narrative choices were significant missteps. I give it a B-, or 3.5 stars out of 5.

I really enjoyed Avengers: Endgame too, and I was glad that I was able to go into it completely blind and the trailer - unlike most of the time - gives absolutely nothing away. I liked the plot, and for the incredible huge cast jostling for screen time, I think the right characters got the right amount of attention. 9/10

On the other hand, Dumbo was pretty shocking - and not in a good way... smh, even worse than I steeled myself for given the mixed reviews. Still, I sat through it. 4/10

I enjoyed Endgame, even with the cringy moments. I told one person I gave it 8/10, because of the cringe, but then thought about the reasons for those moments and re-evaluated my stance on them, so yeah, now I give it 9/10.

Dumbo was horrible. I went into it knowing the focus was going to be on this family and not really on Dumbo, but it really was a bad movie. The ending had me shaking my head, like really?
Dumbo and his mom are set free in the wild, but what about the other elephants? Were they not special enough to be set free from the circus? What happened to them? Also the fire that burned down the rich circus guys place. Did all the caged animals die? Where are all the employees going to find new jobs? How many people died in that fire, it was huge, you can't tell me no animals or people died.
    2/10

It's the same problem with most "uplifting" endings. 1 2 Years a Slave didn't end with Solomon being reunitedted with his family, it ended with Patsey being whipped and worked and raped for the rest of her life, however long that was, and that's just one example.
