    Describe Your Character(s)' Lunch

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by saxonslav, Apr 11, 2018.

What is the main meal your protagonists, antagonists, or other individuals of your tales put up with? Are they lucky enough for the food to be scarcely interesting, or is it a matter of life and death?

Anton, the detective, is happy with water crackers and cocaine. When wishes to celebrate, buys an apple and soda. though he can't resist at tuna sandwiches when available.

Koshka, the 'bodyguard', won't eat anything less expensive than hi-end cuisine, unless he has to survive on it. He would go for the deer roast, or maybe the boar, some Syrah wine, to end with a slice of chocolate cake.

Jan, the ten-year-old, would eat only what he hunts near his backyard, rabbits, birds, plus some foraged veggies, unless his mother forces him to eat with his family.

Mikael, first client of Anton, also of ten, has a strict set of food for the week, and the slightest change onto his feeding routine makes him to cringe, though he would eat everything his mother cooks. Eats nothing outside of schedule, no matter how tasty.

These have the most 'personalized' feeding habits of my characters. I have a cyborg sheep too - Pancracio- , but he really consumes metallic resources and hydrocarbons to keep his organics and facade of 'prized sheep', not by a real need of feeding.

Karen Brown loves good, warm, savoury foods. Give her some oven-roasted chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, with a side honey-glazed chicken, and she's in heaven. She also has a fondness for good, old-fashioned Italian meatballs like her dad used to make.

David Leung is the human equivalent of gruel. The flavour of his food is irrelevant, and the quality is just another detail. All he cares about is that he is fed. His typical lunch would be a microwaved frozen dinner.

Pretty Girl, true to her unlikely nature, is keen on experimenting. She will eat peanut butter and grape jam on fish and chips, salad with flower petals, or deep fried breakfast cereal. Sometimes the food may end up a disaster, but how will you know if you don't try? And isn't half the fun in the experimentation?

Arc settles for whatever he can kill. He's a hunter and usually doesn't stop to worry about things like spices. He boils his own water, too. He's like your typical "wild man", living off of nothing but whatever he can force out of the land. He doesn't even have to, it's just a thing he likes to do. And, yeah, it does weird his friends out.

Sarah takes nothing less than gourmet. She's a bit stuck-up, but it's understandable. She's a royal and likes to go through all the motions of being one; high class and over the top eating habits is just another part of it.

Jack cooks her own food. It's usually okay. She buys most of the ingredients, usually whatever she can't grow. She does have a tendency to go overboard on the spices, which is why the others never like to eat at her place, save for May.

May likes a strong drink and whatever Jack ends up making. She's a bit of a drunk, so alcohol is pretty much a constant in her meals. She and Jack live together so, no matter how much she hates Jack's cooking, she has no choice. I mean, it's not like she's any better, she's actually a lot worse.

Also, @soupcannon, can I confirm that one of your characters is named "Pretty Girl"? If so, then that's a truly next-level name.

Yes, Pretty Girl is a young woman with a fully-functioning, sentient arm growing from her head. She was raised in a bar.

Lunch in the Basilica is old world forest roots and vegetables-- beet, fennel, and caper-- broiled into a broth, served with rye farls. If there's meat it's barely cooked, and served bleeding.

The main setting is Manhattan in 1980, my MC works in a restaurant, and they live in the Village, so there's a lot of food in my book. Some of the foods my characters have eaten are zucchini quiche, salad with green goddess dressing, chicken pesto pasta salad, sesame chicken, paella, chocolate mousse, chocolate mousse torte, chocolate chunk cookies, croissants, pizza, fettuccine alfredo, apple tart with almond cream, and turkey divan. Steak au poivre wasn't eaten by my characters, but my MC came home from work one night complaining about how many orders of it he had to prepare tableside. Also, My MC is from the Soviet Union, so some of the foods he grew up with pop up now and then. And he makes fantastic scrambled eggs and bacon, which is funny, because I can't stand eggs.

I thought of Anton and couldn’t help but think of our favorite consulting detective. :) I’m sure Sherlock would live on his 7% cocaine solution.

Hm... A dinner for the main character of the story I am currently working on? Okay, I'm game.

An overcooked dry porkchop slathered in watery salty gravy. A side of soaked green butterless peas. Stale parched barren faintly yellow corn bread. A paper cup of overly sweet mystery juice filled only half way. The food itself would be sitting on a hard plastic tray. He would try to seperate the peas but they wouldn't be properly strained so his corn bread would soak up pea flavor. He would be given a plastic fork but no knife. He would attempt to locate the table furtherest from everyone. If that wasn't possible he would find a way to slink off to his room to enjoy his meal in peace. The only solace the food would give him is the rubber gloves the cooks are forced to wear and the hygine procedures. He'd eat because he was a carnivore now, no time for silly vegans. He would grasp the meat with the tips of his fingers and rip into it. No fork, it's useless anyhow. He would eat out necessity. He would eat because if he didn't he would become weak and easier to lock back into the fray.

Aozora Chiyumi enjoys her lunch in a mix of bizarrely fanciful ingredients mixed with the ordinary. She typically has rice, onigiri, cooked pufferfish and home-baked cookies.

In another universe, Eriaroon Purgator Merulmnos Zolom Rashaal consumes nutrient paste and filter feed with about the same amount of attention you or I would dedicate to breathing (Eriaroons are weird aliens so...)

Finally, Hector Wetherden gets to have another lovely gourmet in the form of gruel, which is a kind medieval porridge paste and about the only thing he can afford to eat, though the sheer blandness still gets to him.

Carmin is milenial living in modern day Los Angels. The hipster culture is rampant, with new fad diets and new food trend. Carmin's lunch consist of vegan gumbo with a side of a vegan ceaser salad and a vegan strawberry milkshake.

Rose is an English teenager still at high school. Her father gives her £4 everyday to buy something from the school cafeteria. Today she has bought a tuna baked potato, a packet of doritoes and a can of coca cola.

Josh would like to have a real meal. Cooked by someone else. He wants a steak and a baked sweet potato. Sushi sounds good too.
But rent's due, and the band hasn't had a gig in a few weeks. The girls occasionally buy them groceries, but they're both mad at their boyfriends.

Josh is going to have to settle for yet another mustard sandwich.

If he has the opportunity to receive lunch, Gideon is likely having a hearty vegetable stew cooked over an open flame. He has also brought a small sack of raspberries to snack on. Raspberries make everything better.

Whatever carb-heavy horror they're serving in the canteen or, if he's out and about, a bacon roll and a cup of tea, NATO standard.

Chimera flesh. Jesse, Lillith, Sylvia, and Madai killed a crapton and didn't bring any food with them, so they barbecue some lion/snake/goat hybrid meat

I love this question because food is often a character in and of itself in my work!

Nate and Zachary, Under the Knife: They're doing so much tasting during food prep of their businesses (Zachary's two restaurants and Nate's food truck) that they rarely eat a formal lunch during workdays. On their day off though, they'll either prepare something tasty but not to complicated at home, or head out to the many amazing food options in NYC. Nate especially likes encouraging Zachary to try off the beaten path options for pizza, dim sum and soul food to expand his snobbish horizons.

Kelan and Rob, From Blood to Roses: Now that they've retired from the assassin game to their ranch in South America, they will generally have a very simple, charcuterie lunch of cured meat, cheese, pickled vegetables and fruit. The sort of thing they can just toss together quickly between chores to maintain their livestock and garden.

Jin and Adam, Kneadful Things: Jin doesn't really eat since he's a genie (he can, but he doesn't require food for sustenance), but he always makes sure that Adam has a wonderful lunch to take with him on days when Adam is out on one of his various handyman gigs. He always makes sure that the packed lunches include a sweet treat for dessert, and secretly loves magicking baked goods whose only purpose is to taste good instead of being the concluding step of granting a wish.

Connor and Jaeden, Gravity: The can't always eat lunch together with both of their busy and thriving careers, but when they do they usually meet up at a healthy, fast causal Los Angeles spot like California Fresh or Everytable. They are often interrupted by Jaeden's fans and try not to be irritated by the paparazzi, but still try to make it happen at least a couple of times per week.

Frank, the misanthropic crime novelist in my book (finished, not yet launched), forgets to eat much of the time, surviving off scraps found in the fridge and those little biscuits they serve with coffee in coffee shops.
When he's not drugged up or pissed, he gets the odd craving for Chinese or pizza.

His nephew, who plays a big part in the book, lives off nachos and general "gamer food".

They're not a healthy duo are they?

Faye of Papillon usually has tuna sandwiches and apple juice for lunch at work. It's what she usually had for school lunch, and why change something that she does enjoy?

Nixe of Plume always has sliced-chicken (with the rubbery-fat bits removed) sandwiches, a banana, and some from-concentrate punch for her school lunches. She started making them herself the night before a few years prior to the start of the story.
