    Which blog name is better?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Writeorflight, May 26, 2019.

Hey guys! I've decided to take a leap and start a writing blog, but I want to make sure everything's perfect and set in place before I begin. That being said, I'm currently undecided about the name I want for my blog. It will obviously focus on writing, my writing journey, writing advice, books, reviews, excerpts, and whatnot. All the usual stuff for a writing blog.

Anyway, onto the point! I've been playing around with two names in particular:

    1# WriteorFlight
    2# InkHearts

Firstly, do these make sense to you guys? Without any explanation behind either, would you guys associate these with writing and/or do you even like the names at all? I also made a concept logo for the blog (subject to change) which I think could fit with either or (image is attached).

I'm considering going for a more obvious blog name, something like: writers in fiction (but not that bad, obviously), or just a name not as obscure as the options I already have. But I don't know. So I'd be super grateful for any thoughts, ideas, comments, suggestions, etc. you may have! I'd love to hear from you all!

    Oooh! A name, a name.
    A character in your book?
A theme that you use in your writing?
Totally random: Brain Depositary? Thought disposal? Thinkulations?
Idealocalizations? (Ooo, that's mine, forget that one) :D

A quick check suggests both names are taken already, for the .com at least. If you don't already own them you might need to keep thinking.
Many writers seem to simply use their name in a blog title, which isn't particularly interesting but I guess works for general non-specific writing. Or, if you have a particular theme you enjoy writing about perhaps you can narrow it down a bit.

I haven't checked InkHearts, but I knew that WriteorFlight.com was taken. Fortunately, there's WriteorFlight.site or .space, both which are dramatically cheaper than .com anyway.
And I'd love to write in many different genres, kind of experiment to see what I like and what sticks. So I don't know think I'd want to narrow it down, but keep it broad instead. But, either way, good advice, and thank you for you comment, I appreciate it!

I think that it's wisest to use a domain where you can still get the primary name. I'm also wondering who you're looking at for domain service, if you're seeing things that are dramatically cheaper than a .com domain? A domain shouldn't cost you more than about ten or twenty dollars a year. (Hosting the site will cost you more, but the domain shouldn't change that.)

Oh, those are interesting ideas, never occurred to me to try any of those! I probably won't do a character name, just because the purpose of the blog will (hopefully) be about so much more than just my own writing, and also, I don't yet have an amazing character who I'd want to feature anyway. xD I actually like the idea of thoughts or something. Like the image of pouring out ideas, because writing is a lot of that. I'll tinker around with it and see. Thank you very much for your suggestions! I really appreciate your comment. :)

Oh, I did not know that! I knew generally that .com is more widely known, but didn't know there'd be any difference if I chose one over the other. As of now, I plan on registering a new domain with HostGator. And like you said, most options for WriteorFlight are in that expense range, like Writeorflight.net is $12.95 a year. Whereas the ones I was looking at: WriteorFlight.site, or WriteorFlight.space, are both only $0.95 a year. So you think I should find a new domain that I can get .com with? Even if it's more expensive?

I guess it depends on your finances, but I'd say that if you can EVER, for example, afford Starbucks, skip two or three coffees and get the .com. I may be behind the times, but I think that people assume that a domain is .com, so if the .com for your name is taken, people are going to have trouble finding you.

    @ChickenFreak
After doing a little research, I agree with you. It seems sticking with .com whenever available, is the best option. That being said, what do you think of the name Writerflight? Kind of a double play on words. Fight or flight > Write or flight > Writer flight

I suspect I wouldn't get that meaning from it, but would instead see a bunch of writers flying, like a flock of birds, which is an interesting image too. It's an easily remembered and fairly graceful name. I think it works fine.

That's totally fine, I wouldn't expect people to get it without some explanation at least. I know I wouldn't. And that's an interesting perspective! Never pictured that specifically, but I like it too. And alright, I think I'll stick with this name then. Thank you for your help and guidance! I appreciate it!

    Suggestion:

If you are serious about your blog idea, then don't mention it in internet before you have taken it.

Good point. I bought the domain that day anyway, but the advice was important.

Yup! I bought it that day. Currently working on editing the blog. It's a lot more difficult than I expected, but I'm slowly getting there.

There is your substance - or most of it.

Now you must really, really think you concept.

Internet is full of writing blogs. Hardly any of them has unique content - at least not for long. Some are popular, some are neverheards.

There are 3 main things that make the difference between popular and neverheard:

    1. Concept
    2. The quality of content.
    3. Networking.

Concept is the first one. And if you make it right, it helps with other 2.

If you are serious about this, you take them all. If you are not serious, you take what you take.

    Imagine this situation:

Your blog becomes popular. Then some Chinese, Nigerian, Whatever cyber crap company takes one of the very similar names and uses it to something you don't like at all. They might do that just to sell that name to you with good profit so you can get rid of they content.

You cover your brand by taking all of the important ones. .com, .net, .org... and maybe the cheap ones also.

If you don't, then it's good to think your concept so that you can change it's name and brand fast if you want to.

I'm not the biggest fan or writer blogs. There are tons of them by people who call themselves writer without having published a thing. What are they really going to tell me that I don't already know? Maybe you've published and this isn't much of an issue for you, but I think a blog is a hard thing to keep up with if you want it to do well and could be quite a distraction from writing you can sell. Have you thought about pitching a column to someplace that is already established? Of course. if you've got your heart set on a blog, this really won't matter. I publish stuff in some well known places and it's still a struggle to grow a readership. Are you guys actually reading blogs? I sometimes come across them when doing searches, but none of them have been gripping enough to make me a regular reader. There was an interesting one in to 90s where this guy was publishing all his interactions with editors and publishers. It pissed a lot of people off who thought their corespondents with this guy weren't going to be made public. He was trying to sell a novel. I don't know if it ever sold, but he named names and email addresses. Blogs were still pretty new back then. I'm not sure they're so interesting or widely read these days, but I could be wrong. I think my rejection thread here is pretty blog like as well as the progress journals, but posting here is easy and I'm not interested in an audience as much as sharing my experience and interacting with others. I have a feeling it would be lost in the Internet if it was a blog I was trying to do on my own. Plus, I'm a big fan of writing for money, not giving it away for free. And with social media being so popular there's another thing you'll have to compete with. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter. They are all pretty blog like as well. Maybe I'm missing something, but blogs in general just seem like a lot of work and not all that interesting to me.
