I used to have a few guns. A Winchester 1894, that came down family lines, a Cooey .22, a Mosin-Nagant, an old SKS rifle with the permanently attached bayonette, and my favourite for plinking was a Tokarev TT33. Old Russian guns are cheap, durable, and ammo can be picked up cheap as surplus rounds. I'm not a huge shooter anymore, though. Now I'm down to a couple of pellet guns to take care of small pests and a crossbow to take care of large ones.
to be honest above .22 they are as inaccurate as shit - i had a theoben rapid 25 for a bit but it had a trajectory like a bowling ball even at 32ftlbs... so i traded it in for a gas rammed fenman in .22 at 25ftlb - perfect for rats and rabbits... if its bigger than a rabbit i reach for the mannlicher or the shotgun anyway
I think the .357s go up to 200 ftlbs, but I haven't seen one for sale in Canada. Not sure whether they're illegal here or just too small a market when you can get an SKS for $200.
In the Uk the issue is that you have to demonstrate need for FAC level weapons (anything over 12ftlb for rifles)- and there's no real need for a .357 air rifle outputting 200flbs... at that sort of energy you might as well get a .22 rimfire
Yeah, anything above about 10 ftlbs (forget the exact number) needs a license here, but once you have the license the only reason you need to buy one is 'because it's there'. A .50-calibre musket, on the other hand, doesn't need a license; go figure. That may be a another reason airgun stores don't have the big ones; I did a quick web search and didn't see any reason they'd be illegal here, just a bit of a pain due to the license requirement. Not sure about the legality of driving over the border to buy one; it should be legal to import, but maybe not to export from the US. Anyway, guess I'll have to put that idea on hold for now.
As an American, the idea of needing to get a license for an airgun is crazy. Contrary to what you hear, all gun purchases necessitate a federal background check (with a deliberate exemption for friends and family transferring weapons to one another, which is the “gun-show loophole”) but airguns you can literally buy at walmart as long you’re 18.
standard airguns you can in the uk too - its only the powerful ones that need a FAC... but yeah lets not...
Oddly enough, I did find a .35-caliber airgun for sale up here that fires arrows rather than pellets . I do have a compound bow, but haven't had a chance to shoot it in a while.
That would be a cool concept for a sci-fi world. The wildlife of a planet is very dangerous so the aristocracy hunt in giant mech suits and generally be very bougie about it.
No! If I do a side-project then I’ll never finish Blood of the Witch (or whatever im calling this story lol)
Well I can't write it. Kinda busy with my own side project in the form of Mock-Fiction. I suppose someone might pick up the mantle for that one.
"Tally-ho my good sir, it's-a-mechsuiting we go!" The first rule of mechsuiting is a gentleman always dresses in his finest power armour, in case some more terrestrial engagement is required.
