How does one describe this Lamia

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by DarkPen14, Jun 15, 2019.

Long story short, human-ish half of this lamia is starting to tick me off. Best I can come up with without sounding like Issei Hyoudo is "soft". NSFW

And yes, I realize that the Sylvia (the Lamia) is not dressed. This is just a reference image and I intend to redraw her as soon as I find my stylus. However there's a method to the madness, don't worry too much.

If you want a single word, what's wrong with just "beautiful"? Or you could compare them to sirens. Serpentine sirens. That's what I thought of.

I realize she's gorgeous, and the way lamias as a species operate within universe would be comparable to a siren, but that's not what the problem is. It's probably not as complicated as I feel like it is, but explaining her appearance is where I hit a brick wall. Single word description would definitely be beautiful, though.

How are you trying to describe her, and why? Like, is it exposition or one character describing her to another?

"Hey, dude, how was your Tinder date?"
"It- she.. was not as advertised."
"What, was her picture like 40 years old?"
"No, she was hot, but she had like.. snake legs?"
"Snake legs!? What kind of snakes have you been hanging out with?"
"Like her legs was snake. You can see part of it in her pic right here."
"I thought that was a skirt. I mean, she is wearing a Poison t-shirt."
"No, it's just that, but like 12 feet long. Weird thing was she didn't wear pants- skirt, dress or anything, so I could see everything..."
    "Noice!"
"... And I couldn't figure out how to ... you know."
"Smoosh cloacas? So when you seeing her again?"
"Taking her to the farmers market on Saturday, then I was thinking a concert."
    "Thinking of going.."
    "Don't even."
    "Whitesnake?"
"Fecker. Oh, even weirder, apparently she used to know Fasil."
"From the office? Haven't seen him in forever. Wasn't he eaten alive or something?"
    "I thought he got married."
    "Same thing, isn't it?"
    "Ba zing."

Filling out her character sheet. My documents don't always cooperate with images cross-platform, so I usually try to translate the image into words so that I can still get the general idea if my document has a hissy fit and I get the "(Character Name) Image" text instead of the image.

Try not to get too hung up on character sheets for stories. They're pretty much only there for your benefit. Try starting with an overall description, like, "attractive female with a snake tail for her lower half." Then fill in specific details you don't want to get confused in bullet point form:
    • Hair light brown to blond ombré
    • Eyes blue-grey with small flecks of green
    • skin Ivory-caucasian in winter, but tans to a tawny-rose in summer.
    • scales are grey and silver with accents of green in a diamondback pattern. Some sections form a heart instead of a diamond.
    • Long slight scar to the right of her bellybutton, only visible under certain circumstances.
Et cetera. I prefer this way because it's easy to add/remove/alter details as the story moves along.
