My seven-about-to-be-eight-year-old nephew recently told me that his favorite song is TNT by AC/DC and that its first runner up is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. I've been waiting close to nine years for my brother's kid to announce that he liked an awesome song or two, so I could pounce and commence indoctrination. I spent a good bit of today compiling a mixtape CD. I sometimes forget how much I love hard rock, which is a paint-chewingly insane thing to say. It's so good! I thought I'd share a few highlights and open up the floor for suggestions. If a kid digs TNT, then he or she is likely to also love Back in Black and Thunderstruck. They're both on there, of course, but branching out, one of the first killer guitar rock songs that came to mind was Crazy on You by Heart. He and I saw the third Thor movie together in the theater a year or two ago, so The Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin felt like a no-brainer (once I finally thought of it.) It's difficult to gauge a kid's temperature by the fact that he or she likes Bohemian Rhapsody though. Am I right? That could mean all sorts of things. It's unlike any other song. It not only draws upon, but heavily incorporates elements of diametrically apposed genres spanning centuries. It appeals to levels of sophistication ranging from frivolous enjoyment of novelty to intense appreciation for genius aural collage. He's seven. He could go either way. I erred on the side of "my brother's kid is probably a cool-as-shit future aficionado," of course, so along with Frankenstein by The Edgar Winter Group and Spinning Wheel by Blood, Sweat and Tears, I had to include the quintessential ELO: Lastly (but not actually lastly, because there are almost forty songs from close to thirty bands in the final dual-CD draft,) I had to include more Queen. I don't know if I have a favorite Queen song, but if I do, this is probably it: The mix also includes GNR, CCR, Skynyrd, Talking Heads, Bowie, Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Kansas, Hendrix, The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, The Doors, The Clash, U2, Blondie, The Police, MJ, Violent Femmes and The Charlie Daniels Band (he mentioned The Devil Went Down to Georgia as another recent favorite.) I thought I'd leave later rock and indie for a future mix, see how he handles this barrage of classic rock first. What do you think? How did I do? I'm open to advice.

A is for Autumn - she's got a remarkable voice A is for Animals - I mean these musicians started it all
Forgot to mench, grew up with Black Sabbath, I was pre teen age, my older brother had Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, but I only liked Sabbath.
