    Hi, I'm Perseids!

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Perseids, Aug 4, 2019.

Hi, everyone! I'm Perseids, nice to meet whoever is reading this right now.

You know, I actually despise introduction threads. It's nothing personal to the thread itself or the people that post on it, it's still just so strange to be posting to a bunch of strangers. I look back to my preteen/teenage days on virtual pet site writing forums and I don't know how to survive. People say it's so much easier to post things online because everyone is anonymous and no one knows who I really am, but honestly, I think it's a lot harder. I'm actually scared to post on forums (the reason I've abandoned so many) because I don't know that people are thinking before reply.

Anyways, putting that aside, it is going to be really nice to meet you all. I used to commit myself to Role Playing all throughout high school and when I got to college and spoke of my love for RPing, I would get a lot of strange looks. I guess not everyone is creatively inclined to spend hours everyday creating a story with a like-minded stranger. But it was in college when I stopped RPing . Not because I felt ashamed for doing something I love (partly because it died in 2014, maybe before, and it's been really hard to find good RPing threads), but because I wanted to move to the next step and write a full, cohesive story. I've wanted to be an author since I've discovered the magic of creating new worlds.

I'm more inclined to the YA genre, though I've noticed that the YA workshop is kind of a ghost town, but in all honesty, I'm trying to find my drive and passion for writing again. I can feel the passion simmering under real life problems and stress, but I need to milk it out. So, I hope I can use these forums to spark my passion again and help me on this journey. I've already created a Progress Journal that I hope to the stars will hold me accountable.

On a side note, it's about 8PM over here and I've been meaning to eat dinner for the last two hours but I've been too side tracked lurking these forums. So as far as introductions go, here is mine and I'll see you all out on the forums. Dinner time!

Quick fun fact about me (while I'm waiting for my noodles to boil): I love Thai dramas. Have no idea why, I'm from the states, living abroad in a country that isn't Thailand, but after visiting one of my Thai exchange in Thailand 5 years ago, I'm obsessed. Greatest thing ever! Highly recommend if you don't mind reading subtitles. Thai is such a pretty language, too.

    Enjoy dinner!

I also entered storytelling through RP. Beginning by joining random events, then dungeon mastering in D&D style RP, and then on to writing my own stories because people seemed to enjoy my ideas and have a lot of fun with the stories we shaped together.

It's a nice place here with nice folks, so I do hope you settle in and make friends and have a great time!

I know, right? I miss entering into the world of RPing and creating stories with other people. Don't get me wrong, writing my own stories are a blast, but creating worlds with other people is magic.

Thanks for the warm welcome! Still a little nervous to post on other people's threads, but I'll get there eventually.

    Hi Perseids!

I'm one of the forum moderators, and I want to welcome you to the forum. You seem to have a very good grasp of where you are at the moment, in terms of writing, which is excellent. I think it's natural to move from one favourite 'kind' of story into another as you acquire years and experience. However, the love of stories remains the same, doesn't it? As far as being scared ...my niece, who is now in her early 30s, says she makes it a point to scare herself at least once a day, because it keeps her on her toes! So going by that standard, your day is made. :)

Actually, don't be afraid to jump into any thread that catches your eye. Also please DO feel motivated to critique people's work in the Workshop area. You can do that from Day One (although there are requirements you must meet before our software will allow you to post your own work there.) Folks always want to hear feedback on what they write, and they don't need to hear it from an expert. Just from a reader. So visit the areas that interest you, start to interact, and you'll feel comfortable quite quickly. You're certainly not alone having started from RPing—as Nariac indicated above.

If you're wondering what makes a good critique, this was written by a (now retired) moderator here, a few years back. It's still relevant.

I also recommend that you look at this link before you start interacting on the forum. It was written especially for our new members, to help get them going in the right direction—and will explain the requirements I just mentioned. New Member Quick Start

Here are a few other links that might help a lot. The FAQ section isn't a series of questions, but is rather a site map, so you can quickly find the areas of the forum you might want to visit.

This link will explain the various levels of membership and staff designations:

And this one is quite important for new members to read. It's an overview of the Rules of the forum. Most of them will seem pretty obvious, but there might be a few surprises. I would definitely recommend that you take a look at it. Forum Rules

Feel free to explore the forum. There is a lot under the hood, so check out the menu bar at the top of the page, and look into each forum section. Inside many of the sections you'll find 'sticky' threads, which are either informative (coming from forum staff) or are very popular. It can keep you from re-inventing the wheel, when it comes to certain topics.

Anyway, have fun, get to know us, let us get to know you. And if you encounter any problems, feel free to 'start a conversation' with me by clicking my owl avatar and follow the signs. I'd be happy to help.

Cheers for now, and see you around the threads.
