Hello everyone! My name is Gosia, I'm 21 years old girl and from Poland. I've been writing since I was a child, but never finished anything. I'm not sure what is the exact genre I enjoy writing, but I do write mostly plot with fantasy elements (not fantasy per se), crime stories or plots set in the past. I also have a soft spot for a very dark dystopian or apocalyptic topics, but these seem too heavy to pursue sometimes. Also, I prefer if my main characters are male. For no reason whatsoever I just find it easier to make them feel relatable. Now (finally!) I am writing regularly and I'm very motivated to finish the first draft of the fantasy YA book just in time for my sister's birthday. Wish me luck! I also would love to be published one day, but I know well that the market in Poland is really hard. But I don't care: as long as I write, I'm happy!
Hello, everyone! My name is Andreia with 34 years old originally from Portugal but living recently in the UK. My favourite genre is something that is very peculiar and is not for everyone, steampunk; this mostly because I like the Victorian Era. However, I also love fantasy (Tolkien and George R.R. Martin. Neil Gaiman), horror but more psychological, detective and murder mystery. I consider myself to open my mind to read other genres: sci-fi, apocalyptic, surrealism, erotica. Although I try to balance the sex of my characters, the majority are male. There's no particular reason why, maybe because I am used to seeing it from everywhere (movies, books, etc.). Right now, I am writing fanfic more to improve my English, so later, when I start to do my original work, my writing will be more fluent and with confidence.
Hey all! Arnold here, disabled, straight, male, 65, Florida USA. I'm not sure just what I have in some cases, but I lean to the Sci-Fi side. I do have two works which I'm sure one of them is flash fiction and I think the other is too. Then I have my "monster" I call it that because my intent was to try my hand at a short story and it took over. While my monster took over I sadly have not been able to work on it for years and I'm hoping to work on that along with trying to get my other works published. Conditions have brought me to a point where not only do I have the leisure time to work on my writing, but I'm able to get into a comfortable position to work on my stuff. If I follow the advice that Ben Bova gave in a group chat back in my AOL days I will be writing for a number of hours per day, even if nothing from that writing becomes part of my monster, or if I delete a day's work as useless. In amongst anything that doesn't become part of my main project there may be a short story. Also, parts of my main project may be able to be taken as stand-alone short stories. In that direction, there is already a section of the project that may be a bit big for flash fiction but is almost ready to try to sell as a short. When the time comes I will be looking for advice on how to handle it.
Hello world! I’m a thirty-something-soon-to-be-empty-nester. And with change on my horizon, I’ve given into my true nature -writing. I started a project over a year ago. And let’s just say, that wasn’t my first attempt at writing. Annnnnd, that I’m glad I found this virtual community. Looking forward to using my writings to document changes in my real community. I like to refer to my writing genera as “Journalistic story telling.” You may call it, “JUST GET WRITING ZEN!”.
Hi!! q: I'm a queer teen that loves to write: Fiction (Historical or General) Fanfiction Adventure Poetry (a lil bit) Short Stories Right now I'm mainly focusing on a story I'm writing about a historical figure's son (so, Historical Fiction), but I have a lot of side projects on Wattpad. I really love incorporating at least a little bit of queerness in all of my books, so expect that. I love to write about real struggles people face in life such as sexual abuse, bullying, self-harm, depression, and (in the future) human trafficking. I want to help bring these issues into light and show how they can really affect people. They also help me better understand some of these things by having to research. And usually, in my stories, at least one of the characters is created in my image, meaning they have many characteristics that I have. I like to sort of put myself into my own stories But yeah, that's me :3
Hi all. I'm Dan. 37 year old male from Nottingham. I've dreamt of writing my own novel for years and had several very short attempts at it throughout. I'm not getting any younger and my goal is to write a novel before I'm 40. My main hurdle is my fear of failure. I very self-critical and that's the reason I think behind my failed attempts. My favourite genres are science fiction, fantasy and non-fiction. My novel will be sci-fi based but the sci-fi element will be subtle. Anyway, that's me. Please feel free to message me sometime if you fancy a chat. Always keen to meet fellow novelists and story lovers.
Hello. My name is Andie. I am in my late forties. Have written all my life, but don't really have any formal training. Went to college for art. Have been working the last decade as a dog groomer. I was an avid comic fan and collector in my teens and twenties. Then had a son.... bye bye disposable income. Went to art school because I wanted to do comics. Have written: poetry, lyrics, short stories, novels and scripts (comic books). Had a column on a comic book website. My genre's include Fantasy, Contemporary Fantasy (with elements of supernatural and the paranormal), dystopian and horror. I have no problems writing from the perspective of either gender and probably write 50/50. My MC are generally in their teens/college age, but as I age, so do my characters. My current WIP consists of a college age group and older.
Howdy. I'm a 36 year old queer disabled polyglot artist writer Goth person. I'm pretty much at home a lot, barring school runs and taking the dog out. So I'm trying to motivate myself to get writing again because I thought up a book idea and it didn't sound stupid, for once. It's based on a dystopian future in Britain. I am also trying to write some memoirs; I left uni two years ago and learnt some good creative writing skills.
My name is Thana. A student of all sciences and writer of a different sort. The query posed asks who I am seeming vague can be categorized through the principle Who I am applies to both myself in description and who you perceive is writing based on any imagination. To help inspire that imagination for the sake of describing myself and in part answer your question, One will provide a description. If asked. Now that One lays sarcasm aside I'll truly answer, just a chick from parts unknown by way of Hawaii, Texas and often Scotland. I like to write now more than ever to honor my family. As far as characters and stories, the kind that One hopes blows the doors clean off in your imagination. But one can only hope. My preferred genre is interplanetary politics and combat fantasy with a dash of investigative nuances and detective work for the "attentive" reader. If a few paragraph samples would help to get an idea of the style, One will provide them.
One may provide those samples once One has fulfilled the membership requirements for putting stuff in the Workshop—which is the only place on the forum where we allow samples of work to be posted. Mod hat on here. I sent you the links to getting this accomplished in our PM earlier. Welcome (again) to the forum! You sound like an interesting individual. Hawaii, Texas and Scotland? That's a few big jumps. I love the idea of political interplanetary Sci-fi, by the way. Are you, perhaps, a fan of Babylon 5? My age is showing....
Having already lived more than half my current years when B5 came out I'm wondering if you are saying you are still a hatchling? (Would have said kitten, but I'm not quite ready to create an owl/cat hybrid, my current story doesn't need one... ATM anyway.)
Though watching B5 was the only means to pass the time, I never truly found it captivating. Though plot points always had manifest themselves in either a new race or person with powers and occasionally the ship battle or two would take place. That would only take me so far. My preferences were Farscape, Star Trek (any) and comics. Lots of comics. One followed the links as evidenced by my reply as well as the workshop link. Gratitude and amity not conveyed, One will begin the process of slowly starting anew among new friends. One noticed the impact my 'mobile' life and travels have garnered attention. To electorate happily One will describe why a Scottish girl was born in Hawaii. My parents were on holiday honoring their own parents, (my Grammy and Grumpers) my Mother went into labor a week after arriving and as my Father described it
Ah, good to know you're not the socks-and-sandals type. For a moment there, my life flashed before me....
Pausing from a major rewrite of a flash fiction piece and checking my alerts I find the post that I quote from below has been mentioned by a Super friendly moderator. Reading the mentioned post brings me to quote from it and ask the question(s) that follow the quote. If I get this right myself being a 'sixty plus windbag' (yes I admit to being a windbag) you appeal to me. (Makes sense if you ask me, many ladies catch my interest even at my current age.) What I really wonder about is if me having to give up my two cats still allows me to qualify for the latter part of the above quote, or if my current health crises fits me in for you to have an affinity for me? Not that any of my above question matters in the grand scheme of things, I'm just looking for the distraction that will shake my brain loose and let me see the subject of my rewrite in the needed 'light'. If it works I wish to thank all involved in giving me the distraction in advance.
I'm a 20 year old straight male from Ukraine. Generally, I write poems in Russian, Ukrainian. But now, I would like to try myself as an English-language poet
Hi everyone! I’m Jess, 35 female from Malaysia. My favourite genres are romance and fantasy. I’m also open to sci-fi, thriller and mystery. I’m new to writing. Started about a year ago to pen down a story that played out like a movie in my head over and over again. I recently completed it but discovered there’s a whole lot more to writing than just externalising your imaginations. Hope to learn more about this craft here to improve my skills while making some friends along the way.
Hi everyone 26 year old Belgian taking on a nomads life around the globe and working mostly online. I write mostly as a hobby but have been told to share more and eventually publish on the long run. I mostly focus on a fantasy series plus short stories with drama and a smudge of horror in it. Any draft I would post here would be for testing and guiding only (what to add, remove, elaborate, take off) as I have a problem when typing too fast and don't really check twice until much later. Looking forward to this leap into the unknown!
Hello and thank you for this forum. I am 51 male. Software guy. Live in greater Boston. I write because I want to learn creative writing and improve my language skills. I am complete impostor in place like this forum. I started writing a single Sci-fi story a week ago. It is escapist story. My audience is just me and may be friends. Until recently I did not know anything about writing. If you woke me midnight and asked, how the books are made ? I'd answer that they are made at the book factories, you just hit the button, which book to print. Full unawareness to that degree. I realized that stories are designed objects, result of mysterious handwork. I started reading about craft, rules, tricks, anatomy etc of stories. I am amazed how much I don't know.
Welcome and don't worry! You'll be right at home here in no time, the community is really supportive.
That right there is the key! People tell me that I'm a writer because I've started a story or two, now that I have something submitted to an online mag I'm starting to believe them. What I'm saying is just keep plugging.
Hi all. I'm a 29 year old guy from Texas who started writing about a decade ago(and joined this forum back in May but haven't been very active 'till now), and though I have many interests, my favorite genre is the alternate history-AH for short-genre(it can also be called counter-factual or even allohistorical, etc.), which has made up the bulk of both my actual writing, and my story ideas as well; I've been a history buff since I was a kid and honestly, it's just fascinating to me to think about all the different directions history might have taken, you know? (P.S., I'm also considering writing some fan-fiction, too, if I can get the chance to!)
Hi everyone, I'm Dragonsong. I'm a 20-year-old college student and, although I'm relatively new to creative writing, I prefer the genre that is high fantasy. I'm currently writing a short story (and most likely a few more) until I get the swing of things, but I hope to eventually write a novella or novel - if I feel daring enough, that is I usually lurk forums, but I find this site to be friendly and easy to use. I hope to contribute as much as I'm able and become a regular user!
Contribute much! I find I learn much more contributing and working within the forum than I do with simply writing. Welcome.
