Can some people help me out

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Gina0766, Aug 24, 2019.

Hi I am a young writer (13) and I need some feed back. Do you think these are good ideas?
the story of a girl who a born again Christian in a world where religion is banned. contains death, rxpe and others.
the story of a nazi schoolgirl whose disabled sister gets sent to a concertartion camp…
I know they are very sad and stuff, but some things need to be said don't they? Well thats what I think anyway. But would you read it? I also have other ideas. If you want I can say them but those two are my main ones. From Gina0766.

Any idea can be a good idea. It's all about how you write it. Take time and learn through many of our great members on this forum. There is a massive wealth of information already on here through posts and resources, just spend some time and dig.

Welcome! And good on you for trying a hand at writing at such a young age. Wish I had done the same.

    Hi @Gina0766

I'm one of the forum moderators, and I want to bid you welcome to the forum. :)

I've moved your thread into New Member Introductions, because that's essentially what you're doing here. You're introducing yourself to the forum, and letting us in on what kind of things you'd like to write. (General Writing is one of those categories we're trying to keep clear of things that can be put elsewhere.)

I second what @EFMingo said. Take some time to browse around the forum, make friends and see what other people are doing. You might also want to visit the Workshop section, and see what other people are working on. That's a good way to build up an idea of who is doing what. And feel free to contribute to any discussion that seems interesting to you.

Just take your time to get to know us, and let us get to know you. There are a few members your own age here, so you'll not have to hang out with us oldies, if you don't want to. (I am OLD ...)

Before you do anything else, please read what's in this link: New Member Quick Start

This gets you off on the right foot.

We also have a Rules section, which I would also advise you to read. It's only a couple of pages long, and mostly deals with the kind of behaviour we accept here on the forum. Forum Rules

One other thing. I noticed you've put a few bits of personal information up on your profile page. You might want to reconsider giving out too much information about who you are. It's a very bad idea to allow people to figure out your real identity ...certainly not right at the start of your membership here. If that is your real name you've mentioned there, I'd remove it. You'll discover that most people here on the forum—I'd say ALL, but there's always an exception lurking somewhere—keep their real identities a secret. I would encourage you to do the same.

Anyway, welcome to the forum, and I'm really pleased (like EFMingo) that you're interested in writing at such a young age. Once you've fulfilled your requirements for membership and critique (as spelled out in the New Member Quick Start guide) you are welcome to put some of your writing efforts into the Workshop and get feedback. But that takes a bit of time, so enjoy getting to know us, and letting us get to know you.

If you encounter any problems, feel free to contact me by clicking my owl avatar and starting a 'conversation' with me. I'll do what I can to help.

    Cheers, and again, welcome.

Hey there, youngster. Welcome to the forum! Like @EFMingo said, any idea can be good (when it comes to writing), but execution is key. Even the best ideas can fail due to a shotty landing. So I say, run with your ideas, practice with many others, but most importantly, as a writer, just write.

An aside: On the old forum I was a mod on, we had a rule of asking members under the age of eighteen to let a live in adult know they were a member. So, forgive my old habit but, for your own security, just let someone (Mom, Dad, Grand parents) know you joined here. I bet they'll be proud of you for taking your writing so seriously, @Gina0766

Enjoy your time here and may your writing hand be always moving. :superagree:

    Welcome!

One piece of advice I've always heard is to write what you know. There are a lot of adults writing young adult fiction. You have a leg up in that genre being the age you are. You can write from direct, first hand experience what it is like being 13 now. What does the typical 13 year old girl do, worry about, hope for, etc? How do you deal with parents that don't understand, siblings that disappear with new and foreign interests? Those are things you could write about now, with the eyes on the ground perspective you have. What do you worry about - having a romance? Passing grade 8, 9, etc? Keeping friends? Making new friends? Earning money? People my age don't necessarily have the everyday understanding of those issues that you do.

As for your age and writing, Google "Gordon Norman + this can't be happening at MacDonald Hall" - he wrote it when he was 12 and published when he was 13, I think.

I'd just start writing now. Journal, make random notes, write a paragraph or 10 or 100 every time you feel like writing. Eventually, it will start to feel natural and you'll be on your way to getting published.

EDIT: Gordon KORMAN. Everytime I post from my blackberry, the spell check changes a word...and I don't see it til much later....sigh.

Both of those are interesting ideas. They also will be very hard to write because they are such emotional subjects. The best way to find out if you can do it is to try.

Write a few chapters and get some feedback. You need to be here and post a bit before you can post your work for feedback but maybe you have other folks around you that can take a look.

In the meantime read other work and comment on it.

If you are just starting out, the best thing you can do is start turning those ideas into chapters. :write:
