"[Ralph Wittington] supervised the library [of Congress]'s collection of telephone books — “I was in charge of every phone book in the freaking world,” he said in 2002 — and also used his expertise as an archivist in his private life. Mr. Whittington had more than 5,000 early recordings of rhythm-and-blues and doo-wop music, but he was better known for amassing one of the world’s largest collections of pornography." -Washington Post
What were those for, 'medicinal purposes'? Seems an odd combination of things to collect, in those numbers.
Szmuel (Samuel) Heider died September 13th. During World War II, he survived the Białobrzeg ghetto, Auschwitz, Vaihingen, Hessental, and Dachau concentration camps, including being one of Joseph Mengele’s subjects. Old age finally caught up with him at 95. His memoir is titled Miracle of Miracles.
My older cousin was really into The Cars, so I ended up knowing The Cars' music through osmosis...I can probably still sing all the lyrics to the Candy O album and that album Let The Good Times Roll is on from his driving us around one summer when I was a kid. It was so weird getting the Billboard alert about Ric Ocasek yesterday, because "Let the Good Times Roll" was playing at an event I attended on Friday, and it had been a while since I'd heard it. RIP
Sid Haig, AKA Capt. Spaulding, died Saturday at 80. The cause of official death hasn't been released, but there is speculation his death may be related to a trip to the ER after he fell at his home a couple weeks ago. Haig was a B horror movie staple and icon. I can appreciate his drumming, but I always found him to be scary as shit. And it turns out, he WAS scary as shit. Seriously scary dude. Yeeks ....I listened to a bit of his stuff as a memorial on YouTube, then quickly shifted to the lovely Jeff Beck....
