Seriously, sometimes joking about what I've got makes things easier for me. :p Can a man with anxiety, severe hearing loss, and a perfectly useless eye *not* make fun of himself anymore? :p

It's the...what are we calling this decade anyway? But I saw a Ricky Gervais joke the other day. I know Mr. Gervais isn't to everyone's taste, but I thought this one was pretty spot on. Quoting from memory:

I love it because it's a gay fantasy come to life. The "straight" roommate/friend you have a crush on is secretly into you as well and you hit off super well. I've seen some *ahem* educational videos with this premise.

I was finally invited to a dumb RPG game, but it isn’t D&D.

And the GM won’t explain how anything works to me.

If he wasn’t an old high school friend hosting this with my other high school friends, one who particularly begged me to play with her and badgered the GM into inviting against threats of boycott . . . where was I?

Anyway, he gave a setting and a weird page that read like a bad prologue to a story, with dialogue & everything, that reaffirms the setting & time period saying we’re some sort of supernatural/paranormal investigators in mid 1800s England/Ireland, and just said “make a character.”

I have no idea what the game mechanics are. I have no idea if there are classes or skills or aptitudes or whathaveyou. I don’t know if this is battle based or social interaction role play. I don’t know if there are dice!

So I made a character from absolutely nothing, not knowing really anything of value.

And now I’m trying to doodle her, and I’m frustrated because I don’t know what colour her clothes are gonna be (though I strongly suspect I’m more frustrated at the above and am just taking it out on my drawing).

Also, unrelated, but I’m pretty sure I ended up just straight up drawing my character as my girl friend who invited me to play

I haven’t added any highlights or shadows or much yet, or touched up some lines and layers 25672F23-EC47-487E-BF73-347F492D4465.jpeg

I hate vague. All that makes me feel is that whoever is running it hasn't spend the time to really figure out what they are doing entirely. I guess in that event I would bring dice just in case. Maybe they're planning to roll for skillsets while you're there?

I always get worried because unorganized stuff tends to fall apart, and then you've spend effort building a character for nothing.

Nice little artwork though. She looks fun.

Admittedly no creation is ever a full waste... I created Aidan Darces (originally Darcy) for the Celtic gods roll play here, which died after about a month... however he is now the principal protagonist in a 105k word fantasy novel - likewise i created Tax the ambulatory tree for 'you are not the hero' which lasted even less long... and he now also features in the same book

I don’t mind making characters for “no reason.” My profile drawing is based on a D&D character I started to make when one friend bought me the Player’s Handbook last year (and no, was never invited into a one shot or campaign after said gift).

I had fun making her. And I got to play with worldbuilding in making up her culture and religion and other ridiculous little details I knew would never matter and could be vetoed, but it was fun to let my creativity loose. Particularly as I haven’t been writing of late—I hadn’t any stories to tell.

So even if the campaign crashes and burns as some suspect it will very quickly, I plan to have fun with it and in anyway I can.

Just as a curiosity, what class(es) did you make her, or skills did you make her have. I always find it's super fun to slowly reveal some of these skills in a campaign, with a little leniency on the DM's side.

The profile one? (Inniyavan) Paladin. I’ve had an unhealthy obsession with lady knights since I was a kid so my first instinct was to find a way to play one. I did so by making a character who was equally obsessed with knightly romances and so pursued a path to becoming one.

Current character? (Aelish) Because he didn’t explain anything, I’m sorta going with she’s a cleric type and honestly just created her based on the time period and locale, interpreting and building off of earlier decisions.

I decided for 1848 Ireland she’d be an lucht siúil (Irish Traveller) and unsurprisingly a devout Catholic. Because he said supernatural and mentioned our team having dealt with a ghost, I decided she’d use her faith and have her personally venerate St. Anastasia of Sirium, patron saint of healing and exorcisms.

Also, for anyone who is Catholic, I hope my choices don’t come off trivialising or offensive. It seems appropriate for the time & place and I intend and fully hope to include it with the utmost respect.

I would have guessed she was a bard honestly instead of a Paladin, but with devout Catholicism I get it. I guess my love of bards usually clouds my judgement. High charisma and wisdom just allows for excellent lore building and good fun creating, and if a little alcohol is involved, and/or loudly singing said songs. I don't see that judgement cloud lifting from my gaze any time soon.

Clerics can be fun as well, especially if you have them fight mostly with their fists, drink plenty of alcohol, and again the lore building is always a treat. The devout characters can be a bit troublesome sometimes, especially when moral gray areas come into play. That's the mark of a good DM though.

Well, the paladin Inniyavan—my profile drawing—isn’t Catholic. I have her as Path of Light and wrote a crazy long diatribe on what I decided that philosophy-religion is~

I think a lot of my friends assumed I would auto-choose bard so I naturally was contrary. But also my weird infatuation with fem knights.

I think I went “cleric” with Aelish just because it felt like what her natural wheelhouse would be. But who knows how that’ll actually play out, as again, I have no idea what the game mechanics are or what sort of campaign it’s supposed to be or how any of this RPG works my old friend is concocting.

I’m assuming it will all crash and burn somehow but am determined to enjoy every minute of it

I mean the GM’s invitation to the play the game was predominantly a warning to me that he won’t allow me to “break immersion” by out of character banter, questions, or commentaries, and specifically that even though (he said) I know more about the time period and country and the creatures, if he says something wrong I am to keep my mouth shut.

It was so stern. I have 1) never played so no idea how I play, but 2) had every intention of assuming whatever was different was simply a homebrew or his own creation, not a mistake. I wasn’t gonna contradict him (although I don’t know why asking questions are forbidden me?)

I asked my girl friend who had him invite me, and she said he gave no such clauses and caveats to her or the other players.

So I’m the perceived problem child.

Therefore I expect this, my first RPG, with the GM already hard set that I am the worst player he’ll ever have to deal with, to go amusingly awry.

He sounds like an ass. I'd say fuck it and do as you please. Good DMs should know valuable players are hard to find and be a bit forgiving on people trying to learn. Sorry that's your introduction to RPGs. Hopefully it works out, or you find another one that is actually a good time with cool people running the show.

Watched Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It's so good! :O There were things I felt could've been better developed but overall I like it. Looking forward to watching The Crimes of Grindwald.

Yeah, he was never my first choice for a DM/GM, but beggars can’t be choosers.

But I’ve known he’s weird for forever, and I’ve accepted that as a package deal for being friends. Besides, I’m really only playing this game for our mutual girl friend. I like her. She’s fun. and she’s technically the first person who was made aware that I wanted to try D&D and shortly after had me invited into an RPG.

Apparently all my friends were total dorks since junior high and no one wanted to share with me that they’d all independent of one another and/or together started playing dungeons and dragons in secret—apparently secret only from me, the openly RPG curious.
