Hello everyone! Newbie here obviously. Wanted to poke my head in and introduce myself before I posted anywhere else as a random new guy. I haven't written much in a long time but I am a pretty avid reader. I recently rediscovered a desire to write and found it difficult for me to detach the impartial and over descriptive dry writing I had developed over years in college and working in medicine. For now I am reading through some of the amazing snippets and stories you guys produce and the critiques following them to learn about writing and critiquing. I hope to pick up enough from you all to dive in myself sometime soon. Any tips, outside of the big threads posted for newbies to read over, is very much appreciated. Look forward to getting to know you all!
Welcome, fellow newbie I don't have any tips as I'm new here myself, but I agree about the great writing I've seen on here already. There's some very talented people here!
Welcome to both of you, since you're both here! At this point, the place to dive in after all the New Member stuff is giving Workshop Critiques. You may feel hesitant to chime in, but let it be about questions. You do not have to offer the same critique as everyone. Ask about something that was unclear to you. Ask about 'he' and 'him' being the same character in a sentence if it's unclear. Ask where something may be going if you're not sure why it was mentioned. There is plenty to discuss other than story or language mechanics. Any question you ask is a question you may ask yourself at some point. Enjoy!
Thanks for the tips, Some Guy! I'm scared to critique other people's work since I'm just starting out, so what you've said is really useful
welcome both in regard of critique there is nothing to be scared of and you definitely don't need to be an expert writer... often the most useful feedback for an author is from a reader in the demographic the novel or story is targetted at. that aside there is some useful guidance here https://www.writingforums.org/threads/constructive-critiques.20627/ on how to give a goodcritique
Welcome, both! My advice is, don't post photo links that have your name in As I've just done Literally nobody would do that. I am going to stick to parchment and quill! It's a very friendly forum. No need to be scared
Thank you guys for the advice! I really appreciate it. I'll take it to heart as I lurk from the shadows and prepare to strike.
