I had that same thing happen in Marines, honestly. Everybody is trying to be all tough, but I was in the air wing, so we were all a bunch of nerds in reality. Found out after a while that a lot of people wanted to do an RPG, but were always afraid to ask. I started getting a group together, but it was a bit late.

Thing with military is that friends disappear as fast they appear, and move on to other bases and countries. I've been out since then, but wished I had caught the opportunity to do one with some of those guys and girls. Almost everybody in the Marines have a super quick wit, from dealing with the constant stream of yelling or insults, so they can be hilarious and really clever.

I have been thinking of trying to round up some veterans like me for a game sometime here, but I'll settle for written play-by-post for now I think until I get time.

At least you have one good friend there, so that really helps.

Some of my friends and I used to play Cyberpunk in the barracks, but I eventually bowed out when it went from a way to kill the weekday evenings to a mandatory formation in Mack's room every lunchbreak and after chow every evening. Not that I had better things to do, just more things than play that one damn campaign every free moment.

On the nerdy side (look up 26xx, you won't find a bigger group of nerds in the Corps), one of the biggest freetime activities in our barracks for a long time was playing Lemmings on somebody's NES. Like, fifteen guys in cammies all crammed into one cube (we had to live in an open squadbay for a year or so), all shouting advice on how to get those obsessive little walkers safely to Xultation...

    Chesty musta been spinning.

Used to hang out with some of you guys. Much the same sort of nerds. Us 36xxs would just invent more stupid contraptions that's all.

I had almost forgotten about Lemmings. Silly old games.

We have a TV channel called Horror Channel (it's pretty shit apart from the rare occasions they show a Hammer film). Anyway they're running a promo at the moment with the tag line "Halloween horrors every night on Horror!" They show a few teaser clips from the films, and none of them as far as I can tell are Halloween themed. So basically, just horror films. Well fancy that. A channel dedicated to horror films... showing horror films.

Why is it always beds, sofas and other furniture that converted mills sell?

And can anyone explain the title of this thread? It’s for posts that don’t belong anywhere else, yes?

My grandfather watched me and all my cousins when we’re tiny brats (all seven of us) as my parents and the aunts & uncles went out for a nice evening.

He was a military man of few words, primarily using a wide range of grunts to communicate, but that night we’d set him off and he let out a string of curses so vehement that all us kids got into line like that.

The next morning, while we were all at breakfast, my mother asked how we kids were, and our African Grey word for word repeated the precise string of curses in exactly his tone of voice in response, to which silence followed.

I don’t remember, but I feel like gramps got chewed out for cussing at us little devils.

Nemo (our parrot) is a bit of a troll. He only repeats what will get a rise out of some one. He knows our texts tones to get any one of us to come out to the living room, will call the dogs in my dad’s voice so they’ll come running to see what they’re wanted for (and he’ll chuckle, like copy my father’s chuckle, wait till they wander back off, and call them over again). And this loveable little jerk is gonna outlive all of us.
