I need a word for "events", as in "stuff to do around town".

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by bparker, Oct 31, 2019.

I've been working with "events" lately. "Events" which are put on by all different organizations and in all styles. I refer to them as "events", but that's a generic word which can really mean anything that happens, and candidly expressed as "stuff to do around town".

I'm looking for a suitable word, or words, to describe scheduled organized happenings, usually for the purposes of entertainment or education, which briefly capture the imagination of the community.

Examples are rock concerts, art shows, charity festivals, a symposium on modern health care, book club, darts tournament, high school football game, cooking class, public bowling at a discount... anything which has a scheduled date and time at a given location for a given purpose.

What word (or words) could describe these? What's a good word for "things to do"?

"Event" just seems to weak, but I can't think of a better term than that. Therefore, I take this to the Writing Forum.

    Thanks!

I don’t think there’s an encapsulating word in its own right, can only think of ‘fun and games’ or ‘activities and entertainment’

    My best go ^ .

"Event" is a generic word used to lump similar things together. A concert is a concert. A parade is a parade. A pie eating contest is a pie eating contest. But if needed to describe those similar-but-different things under one convenient title, I would probably use "event." Hell, I have an event calendar at work that lays out all the things I have to do outside of the restaurant where I work. Currently I have a press dinner, a critics choice dinner, the Taste of Rhode Island show, a blood drive charity thing, and a hotel shindig thing to help out some concierge buddies that send me business.

So, yep, those are all events. I can't think of another word to lump them all together.

I was thinking activities! Came to mind just now.
I like "experience" too. It sums up everything and so far seems to relate to everything I've included.
