Looking for a writing app that's free and doesn't need wifi to work. I don't trust my library's wifi, but I wanna be able to save and stuff in case I lose the ipad. Sucks that I use a windows computer but I have ways around that.
Free? From the top of my head, I cannot think of anything that's free. I'm sure there are free apps, but the ones I use and recommend cost a bit of money. (The free apps are either way too simple, or have annoyances.) OK, not quite true. There's Pages, which is free, and works quite well, but does not have anything that cries "writing software". It's a word processor and free. Proprietary native format, though, so you have to pay attention to save correctly (exports PDF. DOC, RTF, ASCII, IIRC.) Otherwise, markdown editors. The ones I recommend are Byword ($6) or iA Writer ($10). For more writing options, there's Ulysses. Its a nice app and fine writing experience, but it's a subscription (do not like) and too expensive, IMO ($5/month, $40/year, variations by region). It's a free trial, but AFAIRC does not include syncing without subscription. Though it might work with local saving and manual shove into iCloud or DropBox, but do not nail me on that. Scrivener is only $20, and gives you a lot for the price. From my perspective, the prices for Byword, iA Writer, and Scrivener are extremely fair and well worth it.
Another option, that I love and use, is Bear. The free version doesn't have an automatic backup, but you can do a 1-click backup to iCloud drive/dropbox/drive etc. Otherwise, if you can, the premium version is $15 for 12 months and automatically backs up and syncs across devices.
Google Docs. Cloud stored and cross-platform. It works offline, I think? Microsoft Word Werdsmith is a bit like Scrivener if you want something more complex Ulysses Pages should come free on your iPad and is genuinely a really good app.
Right now I am using an iPhone and MS Word but then I am subscribed to Office on an annual basis. I need to figure out when it expires (February or March or something?) and make sure I find a way to renew it by then. Is there any free apps for iPhone to help plot? Why I ask? Right now for reasons I will not go into my iPhone is my only device I can type stories on. I tried putting word on my TV but that was awkward at best.
I have an app on iPhone called 'A Novel Idea' which is completely free. It's not great, but the best I've found at that price range. (Scrivener is easily worth 20 bucks)
Still looking for “A Novel Idea” in App Store but I did find something for free (I think) that might be helpful. Something I did forget about that I found was MS OneNote which if I could figure out how to use I can write notes in that, right?
Whats wrong with the standard version of 'Notes' that comes with the iPhone? I use mine to jot down ideas instead of carrying a notebook with me everywhere, perfectly functional for that. Really need to get yourself a laptop though if you can.
Nothing I guess. I have only used it for three notes so far. One was to write down a phone number then later edited it until I can figure out what number that is. The second was to find out if a store had shoes for a friend named JC and the last was a grocery list that was written wrong unless toilet paper makes great cereal for someone? 0.o
Wait–are you actually typing on your phone? Or does it take dictation? I can't imagine typing anything longer than a name or phone # on a phone.
Free? What comes to my mind and the only one that I can think of right now is notebooks. It provide you with features for creating documents, not just notes, managing projects, and converting documents to pdf. It works on IPad, IPhone and MAC as well. Paid? You might consider looking at a markdown editor. The one that I would recommend is 1Writer. It is a fully featured and it costs ($7)
