Ugh...Yeah, it is. I think we in the States (and P.R.) really lucked out with this one. Meanwhile, I see TS Gabrielle hanging out in the Atlantic, and another one behind her. Come on, water, cool off...
@Iain Aschendale I see you've got a humdinger Typhoon heading your way. It's all over the news this way for no reason other than it might disrupt the rugby world cup in Japan. Stay safe!
Thanks, it does look like a monster, doesn't it? Looks like it's taking a bit of a turn away from us, but we shall see.
Not yet, tomorrow morning (18 hours from now?) is when the fun should really start. Vague yellow dot is Osaka-ish:
Japan suffers from typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, too much heat, too much rain, the occasional atomic bomb... it's a wonder anyone wants to live there, let alone the Japanese. @Iain Aschendale 気をつけて、ね!
Don't want to speak too soon, but I think this is going to top out at "gusty rainstorm" here. Last year was more interesting:
The worst in my region has passed, and wasn't bad at all anyway. Tokyo is taking a pretty direct hit now though, so it's not over yet for Japan.
His Majesty, the Emperor Naruhito, who has taken the regnal name "Reiwa," is due to be formally crowned on Tuesday. It appears that Susanoo, the shinto storm god, will be sending His representatives to the event. The parade celebrating the coronation has already been postponed as a festival was seen as inappropriate after last week's typhoon. One hopes that this time the deity is in a festive mood and merely intends to put on a light show in celebration of His Majesty's ascension to the Chrysanthemum Throne.
Posting in the middle of a tornado warning. Yay. UPDATE: It seems to be passing now, but we're still under a Tornado Watch effective until 4:00.
You Aussies stay safe, ask the spiders to help fight the fires or something. Seriously, I hope things get under control soon, that's some scary stuff going on.

I am in an urban part of New South Wales, Australia - safe from the fires, sick of the smoke, scared for so many people. You may have seen the apocalyptic pictures on the news, and there's no rain, or end, in sight. 2020 starts in fire and destruction...
I'm in Melbourne and small fires have even broken out here. I can't imagine what it's like to live in rural Australia today. Mallacoota was severely damaged yesterday and people have had to camp on the beach to wait for the Navy to evacuate them. It's hellish, and sorry for gettign a bit political but our government has been completely indifferent to it.
And not only can those clouds spark lightning they can also spin off real tornados. I previously thought those fire tornados you see in videos with a spinning column of flames were fire tornados. Those are more like fire dust devils. The fire tornado in Canberra left wind damage in some places without fire like a tornado would. I think it was an EF2 but I'd have to look up if it was 2 or 3. A couple thousand of those evacuees are being taken to Melbourne.
I've heard elsewhere that Puerto Rico is experiencing a series of earthquakes in the high 5 level. Some roads are blocked due to landslides.
I'm in touch with Wreybies, he's okay at present. https://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/americas/article238996843.html
