    Recovering from a major depression

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by DarkWoods, Jan 6, 2020.

Hi everyone. I subscribed to this forum in the winter 2018 while I was suffering from a major depression. Since then, I'm way better but I still have my ups and down.

I lost my job in October and I have a hard time finding a new job. During my spare time, I would like to start writing non fiction books and also a few horror short stories.

My goal is to remain active on this forum and learn as well as share my I am learning along my way.

Good luck. Remember when a door closes, another opens.

Hello, DarkWoods (from a beautiful part of Canada, if your avatar is any indication - :) )

I'm one of the forum moderators. While you're not new to the forum, this is your introduction post, so I want to say 'welcome.' I'm not sure how much of the forum you're familiar with, but if you haven't read our New Member Quick Start, you might want to take a look at it. It gives new members a boost and may create some inspiration for you, as you get going with your writing.

There are quite a few members here who have told us they suffer from depression, so you will find a lot of people who understand where you're coming from. I haven't experienced depression myself, fortunately, but I expect writing may be an excellent way to work through it. Writing is one activity in which you have TOTAL control. Not only that, you can change anything you write, if you discover it's not quite what you wanted it to be ...at least until you publish it. So it's a great way to exercise your creativity without taking any risks. I highly recommend it.

You can participate in the forum without showing any of us your 'work' until you are ready to do so. So keep that in mind. We're here to help, not criticize ...unless you ask us to! :)

Horror is a popular genre here. In fact, many of the entries in our Short Story contests lean in that direction. That might be a good place for you to start. You might want to read the entries in the current contest (which are always submitted anonymously) and vote on them. You are also free to read the entries in the past contests, to get a feel for what our short story members like to write about. While the current contest is unprompted ...I think? ...most of our contests are written to a prompt. So those might get you started. Feel free to create a story and enter it, any time you like or feel inspired.

Anyway, along with the New Member Quick Start, please also become familiar with our Forum Rules. These do get tweaked every now and again, so it's a good idea to read them once in a while, even if you've read them before.

I hope to see you around the threads, and good luck with your writing. Don't hesitate to contact me if you experience any difficulties, and I'll do my best to help. Just click my owl avatar and 'start a conversation' with me.

    Cheers for now,

    Jan

Thanks for the welcome and the encouragement. I really like this forum, a lot, lot better than all the Facebook groups in my opinion. And I have read all the rules ;)
