Can you edit a Scrivener document in another word processor and then open it in Scrivener again?

Discussion in 'Writing Software and Hardware' started by Xoic, Feb 27, 2020.

I can open Scrivener files with Open Office and I can edit and save, but then when I try to open the file in Scrivener again it doesn't recognize it. It still shows the unedited version.

I'm gathering info on Scrivener in hopes it will help me outline... stuff...
    So, I gather you can?

Yes, in fact normally I don't think there's any problem at all with it. I completely screwed it up (see if I can remember this) by changing the names of the files in the folder where they were stored. I also changed them to exactly the same names in Scrivener and hoped it would automatically open them, but it didn't. What ended up working was to import the files into Scrivener, at which point it now recognized them and had no problems opening them, even after I had worked on them in my usual word processor.

So the issue was just that I had changed the names.

I was using the free trial period of Scrivener. You get 30 days, but it only counts days when you actually open Scrivener and use it. so by not using it except when I needed to make adjustments to my step outline (which is what I was using Scrivener for) I extended that trial quite a bit. In fact I could still use it now if I wanted to.

    Alright, thanks.
I'll be checking out the trail too, but I don't know when. I don't want to lose my writing-flow on spending time in tutorials.

Honestly I only went about halfway through the guided tutorial thing and that was all I needed. Then I just started using it, but I did look at a bunch of YouTube videos about it first. Then again, I never tried to get into much of its deep functionality either. Maybe an hour or so of the guided tour and trying things out and I'd say you're good to go, at least on basic stuff.
