What Are You Doing?

so, the thing is, i like it when its useful. I type fast, but my brain is faster and I miss letters, jumble words, etc. I like how it underlines those words.

what I HATE is it messing with words i use intentionally. For example, I typed "Yale" (as in the school), and autocorrect changed it to "Take." why? I have no idea! i'm lucky I caught that change right then and there.... how many other words has it changed??? I dont feel like back tracking....

 

I know that pain. Since the death of my laptop, I'm frequently "corrected" on my tablet. The best "correction" to date was swapping parents for penguins, IIRC. Why it swapped a well known word for a flightless bird, I shall never know.

I’m starting my second week of self-imposed exile from society (courtesy my boss who wanted me to use my PTO to stay home due to the pandemic) and while alas I hadn’t gotten much writing done, I’m doing a lot of reading and catching up on other things that I wanted to do.

 

Reading through the collection of 'boys books' I have that belonged to my dad. I have some Tom Swift, X Bar X Boys and about forty others. If I read one a day, it should get me through the stay-at-home thing. So far, my favorite is Ralph on the Midnight Flyer (or, The Wreck at Shadow Valley) about 18-year-old Ralph Fairbanks, who has worked his way up to train engineer, and saves the day when bad guys try to wreck the railroad.

I rekindled my interest in historical true crime stories.

 

I've been making a penkey. I've wanted to make one of these for ages, but with no metal working tools at my disposal I've had to improvise. This was cut from a black DVD case then sanded to remove the gloss. It's very shoddy and still took me three times as long to make as I imagined. I had to put in the middle screw after I discovered that (as it's only designed for two keys and about the same thickness) they disappeared inside the unit and I had no way of pulling them out. The middle screw acts as a stopper and exposes the little ridge of the key that I can get my thumbnail behind quite easily, just like a penknife.

Now I know the ropes I'll make another one day and try to make the finish better.

I just don't even understand what our world has come to in a manner of a month. It's...bizarre. I'm a teacher and like...I feel like I'm in limbo.

I have a collection of "girls' books" that belonged to my grandmother. I'm talking fiction dating from the 1880s and 1890s, that she would have been reading as a young teen just before the 1st World War.

Surprisingly, perhaps, the heroines in most of them stand out by defying convention in some way or other (like being willing to labor at an honest craft for their living, at a time when English "ladies" didn't work, or performing some amazing deed of pluck and courage to save someone in danger) and get their heroes as a reward for their grit and virtue, as opposed to the guys doing the rescuing.

Once you get used to the style, the collection is rather fun.

 

Good lord, everyone in this show could be played by Woody Harrelson.
