    Dress descriptions

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Dameldut, Apr 5, 2020.

    Now this... I suck at.

I've never been able to properly describe clothes before and dresses are doubly difficult.

Please help me describe these two dresses.

In my mind's eye, the first is made of silk and is orange in colour. The second is black and made from chiffon.

Edit: Also, while the first is strapless in this image, I imagine spaghetti straps made of diamante crystals.

I'm sorry. I'm laughing right now just thinking of the first one but only insofar as the names.
A sheathed, cowl-necked, natural with a diamante spaghetti strap.

But, I did see that it had darker blue descriptions and think that'll help.

    Thank you.

I'm sorry, but that first dress is nowhere near orange.

I'd call it nude, off white, cream beige or possibly very light peach.

Spaghetti straps does not make for a good description for a fancy dress, even if it is a legit term.

For material - I wouldn't know even if I had it on my hands. I very much doubt that most people would care for that indebted description of a piece of clothing.

For the first one I would say it's got an elegant classical design, pleats falling straight from hips to floor to resemble a fluted column, and the gathered pleats (if that's what you'd call them) around the bosom area resemble a Greek toga.

I mean, I wouldn't say it's entirely successful at being elegant or classical, but that's what it's going for anyway. I don't know if you're wanting to describe specifically this dress or just something similar, but I'm assuming similar.

For the second I'd say floor-length, Vee-cut, classic black design, closely fitted to the contours of the body down to the knees where it flares out elegantly. I have no idea what to call the shoulder straps, but the thing that makes it a little unique or different is the extra little sleevelets or whatever that leave bare shoulders. Sorry, I thought I'd take a stab at it, but I don't know anything about dress design or terminology.

    Thanks guys!
I'm grateful for your input but I went with something completely different because of what the scene represented. I didn't need the dress designs as is but more of a 'how they look on the people wearing them'. So I used the approach of what stood out about how they were worn and what *cough* assets they displayed, how they made the narrator feel etc.

Also @Lemie I did say, in my minds eye. It's what I was picturing one of the girls to be wearing. It wasn't exactly the dresses on display which is why I added it, otherwise I would've just left it blank for you to describe. I still thank you for your input though.

@Xoic, on the black gown, those exposed shoulders is termed the “cold shoulder” look. ;)
